Lewes Man Charged with 5th Offense DUI after Attempting to Flee from Troopers

Dover, DE – State Troopers have arrested a 34 year old Lewes man for his fifth offense DUI after he attempted to flee from a traffic stop.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:10 p.m. Tuesday September 23, 2014 when an anonymous call to the Kent County Emergency Operations Center (9-1-1) reported a possible drunk driver in the area of Royal Grant Development. Troopers responded to the area of Royal Grant Way and located a black BMW parked in the roadway with a male subject slumped over the wheel as if he was asleep. The driver awoke when a trooper opened the door to the car to check on his well-being and he immediately accelerated away in the vehicle at a high rate of speed. Troopers began pursuing the BMW, with emergency equipment activated, and observed it turn onto Crown Circle where it backed into a private driveway and came to a stop. Troopers then began issuing verbal commands to the operator to shut the vehicle off, but he again accelerated forward almost striking a trooper standing outside his patrol vehicle before the BMW struck the front of a fully marked police car and continued back onto Crown Circle. The suspect then drove southbound before coming to a stop a few houses down and pulled into another private driveway where he exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Troopers initiated a foot pursuit and deployed a divisionally issued Taser (Electronic Control Device) taking him into custody without further incident.

Steven M. Williams, 34 of Lewes, was transported back to Troop 3 where a DUI investigation ensued and he was subsequently charged with his 5th Offense Driving Under the Influence (previous convictions of 08/31/01, 10/28/01, 01/16/04, and 12/12/10), Resisting Arrest with Force, two counts of Disregarding a Police Officer’s Signal, Reckless Endangering 2nd, two counts of Criminal Mischief, and Reckless Driving. He was arraigned at JP2 and committed to James T. Vaughn Correctional Center on $15,200.00 cash bond.

I don't understand. The last time he was in court he promised the judge he wouldn't drive drunk again.

He will go on to kill a family while driving drunk because only then will they put him in jail long enough to prevent more deaths.

This makes NO sense...I see SO many stories where folks in DE are on their 4th, 5th, 7th, or more...DUI offense. How are they even able to have a 5th+ DUI opportunity? Why are they not in jail after at least the second one?

The courts just want to give him every possible chance to kill someone.
