Md. comptroller to collect signatures in bid to push back school starting date

Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot, who has earned a reputation as an agitator during his time in office, plans to launch a petition drive next week to persuade lawmakers to embrace a pet cause of his: delaying the opening of public schools until after Labor Day.

Franchot (D) is planning an event Thursday on the boardwalk of Ocean City, one of the state’s top tourism destinations, to kick off a “Let Summer Be Summer” campaign. His aim: collecting 10,000 signatures from Maryland citizens before the General Assembly reconvenes in January.

The only reason he gives a crap is because OC hotels and other businesses will ear more revenue which + more tax dollars for the Democrats to wastefully misspend. Nobody else in MD gives a crap except the businesses in OC. I wish my kids were starting school next week, just as many other Maryland schools are.

To 12:25: Yes, somebody else gives a crap except the businesses in OC. The only reason some parents want school to start before Labor Day is because those parents can't wait to send their children to school. In school some of the children will have free meals and free babysitting by teachers, and the parents will have more freedom and know where their child is supposed to be.

The only reason these people want their kids to start early is because they are to lazy to watch them or they have to pay for camp or baby sitter.

What a disgrace you worthless parents.

Dr. Fredericksen has already stated he didn't want school to start after Labor Day and he was going to make sure Peter won't stop him.

I as a parent want my kids to get out before Memorial day and go back after Labor Day. That's the way it was when I was a kid and it worked out perfectly fine.

Make those teachers take those 10 Professional Days during the Summer. All they are is lazy days off for the school teachers and staff.
