Congressman Harris Applauds President Obama’s Designation Of Harriet Tubman Monument

WASHINGTON, D.C.–Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. announced his support for President Obama’s designation of the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument on the Eastern Shore. In February, Congressman Harris introduced legislation to establish the Harriet Tubman Railroad National Historical Park in Caroline, Dorchester, and Talbot Counties. He introduced identical legislation in the previous Congress.

Congressman Harris recognizes the importance of Harriet Tubman not only to our nation’s history, but the history of her native Maryland. Tubman was a key figure in the Underground Railroad and the effort to undermine slavery throughout the United States, as well as an active member of the women’s suffrage movement.

“I applaud the recognition of Harriet Tubman’s contribution to our nation’s history. Her relentless fight for equality and justice is a testament to her courage and resolve to improve the American way of life. Harriet Tubman is a role model for all Americans and someone who deserves to be honored.”
