A Wall Street Journal report detailing the broken-down status of talks between President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner on the year-end “fiscal cliff” reveals that Obama threatened to use both his inaugural and State of the Union speeches to blame Republicans if there’s no deal.
Negotiations reportedly came to a standstill after Boehner proposed increasing the tax rate on top earners:
Mr. Obama repeatedly lost patience with the speaker as negotiations faltered. In an Oval Office meeting last week, he told Mr. Boehner that if the sides didn’t reach agreement, he would use his inaugural address and his State of the Union speech to tell the country the Republicans were at fault.More
At one point, according to notes taken by a participant, Mr. Boehner told the president, “I put $800 billion [in tax revenue] on the table. What do I get for that?”
“You get nothing,” the president said. “I get that for free.”

It's time Boehner to make a stand. There is no reason Obama can't reach a middle ground here. I truly believe that if Boehner remains solid and an a non extension of unemployment benefits hits, we will soon see how many people still support Obama.
I'm sorry. This is just showmanship. While American's suffer at home, Obama and Congress goes on vacation (not cheap ones mind you). I wish I could feel sorrow for someone in Washington right not but that's pretty tough.
Beohner holds the cards. Let the SHTF! I used to care, but the fact is, these two will dance and report until the 11th hour, Boner will cave, and Obama will print more money and destroy the value of out paychecks, and the sheeple will will go back to work the next day.
Tell me I'm wrong here...
Speech may or may not matter - the truth is NObama OWNS this economy. No way he can get around it.
When you don't care about the country you can do anything that you want. That is why Obama is so cockey, he doesn't care about the country one bit.
Let the taxes on the "middle class" go up. Most government workers and union members are in the "middle class". They voted this person in as president, now they can pay the piper.
