Little-Known Maryland Tax Applies To Online Shopping

Bargain hunters are getting ready for Cyber Monday, the online shopping version of Black Friday.

But some shoppers may be unintentionally breaking the law when they make online purchases.

A law in Maryland called the "use tax" requires consumers to pay a 6 percent fee on their online purchases. Bethesda Patch reports that shoppers are supposed to pay this additional tax outside of what is levied by an online seller.

The tax applies even when residents cross the border into Delaware, which doesn't have a sales tax. But hardly anybody knows about the tax.

Do they require that something bought in Virginia also pay the "use" tax?

If they want it tell them to come get it! Sooner or later every one that wants to beat these stupid taxes will find a way. We are taxed to death now in Maryland thus the reason so many folks here go to Delaware for a whole bunch of goods Maryland has. Want to Open a new business do it in De. the tax advantages are terrific!

The front page of the paper yesterday was the loss of business for the liquor board. They seemed surprised their sales have gone down when MD added a 3% tax. Shockers

Judging by the Black Friday crowd at local stores it appears that on line shopping may be on the decline.Returns are my main concern. It's so easy to walk into, say a Wal Mart and exchange an item vs shipping back an on line defective item or something that does'nt fit.Just my opinion.for all of you slender or skinny people out there I'm sure on line shopping works well.

This tax only applies to businesses with sales revenue in the state of Maryland, not for typical consumers.
