PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The deadly earthquake
that leveled Haiti's capital more than two years ago brought a thread of
hope: a promise of renewal. With the United States taking the lead,
international donors pledged billions of dollars to help the country
"build back better," breaking its cycle of dependency.
But after the rubble was
cleared and the dead buried, what the quake laid bare was the depth of
Haiti's dysfunction. Today, the fruits of an ambitious, $1.8 billion
U.S. reconstruction promise are hard to find. Immediate, basic needs for
bottled water, temporary shelter and medicine were the obvious
priorities. But projects fundamental to Haiti's transformation out of
poverty, such as permanent housing and electric plants in the heavily
hit capital of Port-au-Prince have not taken off.

Who cares... Rebuild this country first.
Banks and the global elite are confirmed to hold 32 trillion in offshore accounts,where it is subject to little or no taxation.As a result,280 billion is estimated to be lost in tax revenues.Essentially this is forcing US citizens to foot the bill.Put into perspective the tiny percentage that Haiti actually needs.Given that information,the American taxpayer should not be on a guilt trip in regard to rebuilding Haiti.

i do not donate either to ANY of those organizations. i don't think the money ever reaches the people that need it. if there were a way to "adopt" a family, i'd do that instead. so, i opt to support the local fire dept and such.

Are Haitians donating support to the repair of the Washington Monument from earthquake damage? Are they rebuilding the homes that were destroyed?
No.
Leave them alone.
And do not give 100,000 of them visa's.
Why, exactly, is it the US's responsibility to rebuild Haiti? We have people in trouble here that need help. Why is what money we have going to help other countries that don't care a bit about us?

Didn't the US start with 3M or so and found out the money was being squandered or taken by corrupt people over there?
Looking at the photograph with this article it looks just like it did before the earthquake. Our job is done here.........
You cannot expect a third world country to live up to first world standards,no matter how much money you throw away on it.Haiti never has been and never will be a civilized nation.Those poor people were better off when they were merely a French colony.I would hope they do rebuild though,or we will see more coming here.And then we wonder why we have so many obscure illnesses coming back,like TB and pertussis.
Lot of compassion for your fellow man in this group. I wonder if the ministers around here read these comments and realize what they are dealing with.
No accountability is why I don't text or otherwise send money to these "causes".
The united states comes before haiti... you dont take care of another country when people here are just as bad off and when the country cant afford to run itself
