Firefighters Reprimanded Over Facebook Comments Lose Appeals

Crew members complained about Sonic restaurant online

BALTIMORE
- Four volunteer firefighters in Bel Air who were reprimanded for improper posts they put on Facebook last month have lost appeals they had made countering the disciplinary action.

WBAL-TV 11 News reported in May that a member of the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company posted a complaint about a Sonic restaurant that was offering discounts to military members and police officers but not firefighters.

The post said, "Even when myself and a full engine crew are in turnout gear at Sonic for lunch, the manager still says, 'Only police and military get discounts.' Cool, thanks. We appreciate the support."

That was followed by a chain of comments from fellow firefighters, including some heated comments insinuating they wouldn't respond to future fire calls at the restaurant.

Fire company Chief Eddie Hopkins said the volunteers involved were either suspended, demoted or both, and all of those punishments have been upheld.

A fifth firefighter's appeal is still pending.

You got to be kidding me , fire fighters sit on their butts most of the time. On a very rare occasion they save something or very rare someone.
Since 911 firefighters have been thought to be heros , if the truth be known , it is the opposite.
They have a few things in common with most entitlement people , they get paid to do nothing , the liberals love them , for what , I don't know , their toys we pay for and most are not needed.

i agree totally with 3:17. I commend them for volunteering, but really...are they heroes? most fire depts i've been around, it's more of a social boys club.

yeah maybe not around here. you all are disrespectful and rude.

there are plenty of serving men in places like NYC etc that really work hard for what they do. just because the firefighters around here might sit around, doesnt mean that they all do.

i agree, if they serve to protect you they deserve a discount.

and i hope that next time your house catches on fire they sit on their butts and take their time.. cause thats "all they do"..
oh and the kid trapped in the buildling? you're lucky if they save them, considering the way you all talk about them i wouldn't want to help either..

Regardless of the firefighters' opinions, whatever happened to "Free Speech"?
