Whitehaven Ferry Closing AGAIN



This time it will on 12-15 for 6 to 8 weeks.

Joe,
Apparently you're not as informed as you claim to be. This ferry has been approximately four years between shipyard updates and has performed extremely well for those four years. I use this ferry frequently and many of us frequent commuters have been very pleased with the level of service to date. Please explain what you mean when you say "AGAIN"?

Atleast it isn't as bad as the one in Delaware that is closed more than it is open and cost 10 times as much money.

If we could just figure out a way to prevent high tides, strong winds, and mechanical breakdowns on a ferry that hasn't been overhauled in 4 years and runs 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, we would have it made. It is just luck or good mechanical repairs by the county that have kept it limping along. Good job County. I really appreciate your efforts to keep the ferries going. No complaints here.

Let me see now , they close for wind , rain , fog, tide , any stupid false alarm for repairs , cold , hot , snow , ice my tummy hurts , I got a cold. Whatever!
My engine is making a funny noise , bring me some oil , I'm at lunch , I'm on the cell phone.

A toll is needed on both ferries to help with the cost to the tax payers.

4:45 is an idiot. Hope you use it and have to drive around for a month. If they ran in dangerous conditions and something happened, you would be the first one to complain. They should close the things anyway. They only service a very small percentage of the population. Be better to use the money and fix some roads.

4:45 is kinda right. Having lived in this area for over 35 years, there has been a steady decline in the amount of time and conditions that the ferry operates in even though the ferry itself has been upgraded and enhanced. Several years ago the county added a weight limit to the ferry that is seldom ever adhered to except for commercial vehicles. I have seen pickup trucks with GVW > 9,000 loaded on the ferry with 2 passenger cars = a lot more than the 10,000 limit. Many tourists use the ferry in the summer months.

The time was reduced to keep them running. I say close them. Let the tourists go around. I don't care what kind of upgrades it has had, you can't operate them during high tide or in unsafe conditions. They cost too much money. I agree with 5:02, very few people use them in comparison to the county population. Use the money for better things.

Here's a thought. Purchase an additional ferry. Have it on standby ready to go in service if either of the other two go out for repairs. Have additional lighting installed at both ends of the ramps for additional safety. Operate 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
Charge $1.00 to ride across the ferry and offer a discount for frequent riders. Perhaps 25 trips for $20.00.
Either get in the ferry business or get out! Just my 2 cents.

7:38, there is no money for a spare ferry, besides, where are you going to keep it. For the ferries to run the hours that you suggest, you would have to hire do all sorts of things to the ferries and have licensed captains, again, no money. Finally, if you charge, who is going to collect the money? Risk management? The operators shouldn't have to deal with money, nor should they. Close the ferries and use the money for other things. More people would benefit with the half million per year used in other places.

Salisbury council might find that. Their always finding extra money that they need.
