A new statewide poll finds Gov. Bob McDonnell highly popular in Virginia. But it also found support for ending the state’s ban on allowing same-sex couples to adopt children.
The Quinnipiac University Poll found that 55 percent of the 1,434 registered voters polled approved of McDonnell’s performance. Just 26 percent disapproved.
Peter Brown, executive director of the university’s polling institute, says the 2-to-1 ratio is among the best nationally for governors and better than McDonnell’s high-profile Republican counterparts in Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
A majority, 52 percent, opposed gay marriage, but 51 percent said it’s time to end Virginia’s ban on adoptions by same-sex couples.
The poll’s margin of sampling error is plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.
