Are you for or against speed cameras near schools in Wicomico County?

I say put them up on every street. If a driver doesn't speed over 12 miles over the limit, there's nothing to worry about.

For. 100%

They are a waste of money. Speeders know where they are and when to slow down. They only catch the people who are unfamiliar with the area,(out-of-towners, tourists etc.)

YES

The catch words are "near the school". In front of the schools is one thing but .5 or 1 mile could mean on another street near the school. I think this is nothing more than for revenue and safety is being used as the reason. Come clean with the people and tell us what this is really about.

No. I'd put them up and the cameras you had on your blog a week ago and start eliminating Police and cars and gas and maintenance... cost! Help to make the budget with smart spending and cutting unnecessary expenses. Use the technology to bring about cost reduction and more efficient LE.

NO. If you want people to slow down, post cops IN PLAIN SIGHT. Quit hiding and being sneaky while you are taking our money.

What am I saying? It's all about the money that's why they hide.

Put them everywhere. Let the police do more important work.

Are they up yet? Will they let the public know when they are put up and where they are putting them?

Hmmm. You have a point. There certainly is more crime to worry about than speeders isn't there?

But wait, there always has been. Guess there's more money in speeders.

For mostly permanent locations, have your zip code ready and go to:

As for revenue, the MSP can make a bundle of money by parking portable cameras on Route 50 and pulling some of the aggressive driving troopers off the road. It would be a little safer too.

Well,

Since Obama will determine what kind of transportation you will use a HORSE n BUGGY do not travel real fast so Camera's at this time may not be a good idea. We will have to wait to build the economy, drill for our own OIL and than we can have prices lowered every-where else. Only than should we re-think about cameras.

Ain't that the truth.

Cameras, cameras every where. Big brother must monitor and control our behavior.

Anonymous said...

Absolutely Not

The reason - that opens-up Pandora's Box to all other areas of the County.

I say - abolish the Camera concept.

You have a consitutional right to face your accuser in court. Robotic cameras skirt this right. Some judge will deem that the information from a robot camera is reliable and you will have NO DEFENSE even though these cameras have been used in great Britain and have been spoofed, fooled and found unreliable.
BAD BAD IDEA!
How about we put cameras inside the cop cars that monitor their every move speed and direction.
Post the info publicly and ticket any cop that speeds when not on an emergency call.

Wow, 5:31....you better stop thinking for yourself and do a better job of goosestepping. the police exceed the speed limit? Flaunt the laws? Oh NO!!! Act as the armed agents of the government so they can enhance the revenue stream and tell themselves they are doing a dangerous job (with those radar guns?) The government knows there are lots of speeders everywhere but they can't pay or hire enough police to get EVERYONE, so these cameras help cover the gaps. But they promote it as "school safety" and "protecting our children" and if you argue against THAT (not Big Brother or any CONSTITUTIONAL issue about facing your accuser), then GASP!! You must be some commie criminal!! Oh YEAH!! A criminal coddling punk hiding something. You on drugs, too? In the last, say, 10 years, exactly how many kids have been killed by speeders in the Wicomico's school zones? And, PLEASE, don't any of you Nazi's say "if even ONE child is saved" crap. Thats a line used to get you to agree to these things. Pedestrians and cars collide. Everywhere. After the school zones, will we THEN put them on ALL streets (oh yes believe thats NEXT), because you know, if we can save even ONE life, well SEIG HEIL baby!! Slippery slope?? We are on it and so many of you, just like the millions in Germany in 1939, are going right along. Stand up for your freedom. QUIT surrendering EVERYTHING in the name of "safety" (a red herring) or "crimestopping" or "protecting" someone....Do you want to live in China, with constant and pervasive surveillance (and subsequent suppression of the ones who don't like it)? OR do you want to have a free country, where, of course, bad things happen sometimes, because the population is allowed to think and act freely?

good grief people just don't speed
wal-mart isn't going anywhere you'll get there in due time
everyone in a hurry to get nowhere
I think watching too much Nascar is the problem people think they are good drivers
write the tickets
being an idiot should be expensive
driving is not a right

Anonymous said...

driving is not a right

Actually it is but they won't say that because then they couldn't enforce traffic laws.

That's why they don't assess any points to your license when you get a ticket from a camera. They just want you to pay the ticket and move on.

Most places that install cameras find out down the road that it's not profitable and remove them. Sometimes it's just the threat of them perceived as being there that slows people down, temporarily.

Why they put schools along heavily traveled roads is beyond me.

Speed Cameras do not get a picture of you the person. Just the car and the License. The owner of the car gets the fine, and no points because they can't determine who is driving. Even though they have gotten me twice, I think they are great tool and they free up the police for more important issues.

All for it. Do you realize that there are typically only 4 Deputies patrolling the entire county. 4 Deputies for all 300 square miles. Two calls requiring backup means no cops left. It is a no brainer. The city council picked up on this quick. Too bad the county council isn't as bright.

lmclain said...

Can you get me that figure? How many kids have been killed in school zones during school hours in Wicomico County? keep in mind that whatever the number is, it was BEFORE cameras were installed.

lmclain said...

9:21....You (perhaps inadverdently) made my point. The council knows there's a gold mine out there in speeding ticket revenue, but how can they capture it when there's a limited number of officers? CAMERAS!!! But citizens often resent "remote" law enforcement so they (the council) couches it in terms of "child safety" (how can you argue against THAT?!) Thats the ticket (pardon the pun)! If they came out and told the truth --- we need more revenue! -- it would be a very hard sell (I think, anyway). And it has nothing to do with safety....just money. And saying there are only 4 deputies to respond to calls is a bit disengenuos...there are county police, the Sheriffs dept, Salisbury police, Fruitland police, and the State police. If there is an emergency needing back-up, a WHOLE LOT of police can be there (I've seen 4 units at a single traffic stop and for a bank robbery, more than a dozen).
