Today's Survey Question

Do you support Maryland Legislators passing a bill stopping anyone from smoking in a vehicle with a child inside?

If so, do you believe $50.00 is a strong enough fine to convince people to stop, if passed?

They better not dumb down the exam score requirements for the MSP. There are too many laws for them to remember now.

It is not a strong fine but you know that will go up.

I usually disagree with most of the STUPID bills that are presented. I think this is a great idea. As a former smoker I never smoked with my children in the car and it makes me sad when I see parents that do. I do think that the fine should be greater. Most smokers would think that $50.00 would be worth the risk.

The whole problem with this is that the government really doesn't care about the kids. They really are just looking for more revenue to spend us into oblivion. That being said. How much can you really charge someone for being stupid?

Anonymous said...

More nonsense. Some will fall for anything if it's packaged and presented in the PC way.

Its CHILD ABUSE to smoke in a car with children in it. They should be arrested and charge with abuse. Same goes with no seat belts or car seats.

Yes, I support them & No the fine isn't enough! EW

are they going to enforce this law? the cell phone law needs to be made a primary offense in md, but would it be enforced, that again is the question.

Look, I don't smoke, nor do I want people to smoke around my children. However, smoking is not illegal, and I feel that this is just another way for "Big Brother" to intrude on our private lives. People who smoke with their kids in the car are still going to smoke in front of them at home as well as other places. I wonder if they will start fining pregannt women for smoking and/or drinking? Just a thought.

While I think the premise is valid, there are too many laws already. Government should butt out (pun intended). Get your revenues some other way!

Just another Feel Good Law. While yeah you shouldn't smoke in vehicle with kids it is not the Governments job (or right) or anyone else's business. What is next??? You can't drink a beer in front of your kid? (I dont drink so it wouldnt affect me)Cant cuss, dont wear a bathing suit. Oh Heck maybe we shouldnt take our kids to the beach because of what they might see.( skimpy bathing suits, speedos) Come on people do you REALLY want the Government to tell you EVERYTHING you CAN or CAN NOT DO??? Be responsible and raise your own kids!!! I dont want need or expect them to tell me. I Know my RIGHTS and I want to KEEP THEM!!!

My parents smoked with my siblings and me in the car; we smoked with kids in the car; my kids smoked with grandchildren in the car. My parents passed away in their 80's, the rest of us are alive and well. The big difference is the politicians weren't as greedy and controlling then as now.

Sounds like it's time for new law makers, not more, nonsensical, useless laws.

Side note - I personally quit after 52 years of smoking.

smokers will comment that it's a stupid law. non smokers will comment that it's a great law.

i'm a mother. smoker or non-smoker, no one should smoke in a car with a child present.

sure go ahead
then comes no smoking in your house around your kids
then comes "oh you smoke? your not allowed to have children you may smoke around them"

just whittle away and soon you wont be able to anything that the government does not approve of.

its time to stop government intrusion on your private life

Doesn't matter if you smoke or not when the government is trying to control everything you do it is against your Freedom of Rights. I don't know how anyone over 30 is still alive because our parents did things that are now taboo. Watch what you wish for because pretty soon the Government will have all control because all the I want a perfect world types will give away all our Freedoms. There is NO PERFECT World here on earth!!!

Do you people really need others to think for you? If the law doesn't affect you, you could care less. But what you fail to realize is that every law will affect you in some way shape or form.

Riding down the road with the windows down, will it really affect anyone else in the car, child or not?

I'm sure this law is important to someone but I can think of 10 more that would be more important and have more of a positive effect on society than this nonsense.

I know you lawmakers have to do something to justify your existance but come on. Is this the best you got?

your kids, your way. your body, your pack of cigs. quit telling me what to do.
34 - non-smoker

I think the government should just stay out of it, look how great they are doing. If they would worry about the people commiting real crimes, we would be better off.

More intrusion by Big Brother.

11:29 These laws always have increased enforcement as time goes on.

Very few people realise that as of Oct. 2011 the police will be able to fine you if they see you driving on your cell phone.

Right now they have to pull you over for something else first. I think people are very complacent about this and are in for a rude awakening in October.

I think if the government was truly interested in "anyone's" safety around cigarette smoke they would make cigarettes entirely illegal. No more growing them, no more selling them, no more taxing them. Total prohibition. Until the day they do that I will believe it is only a BS powerplay type move. First I couldn't smoke inside, now I can't smoke outside, next I won't be able to smoke in a car with kids or in my house with other "people" present. Either make them illegal altogether or leave me the hell alone about a cigarette.

Its ALL about the money... first, it's $50....soon, its $500. WHEN will these no-account slimeballs stay the heck out of our lives? It AIN'T their business.

We are not worried about you smoking and setting a bad example (which you are)we are concerned about the smoke in their lungs.
If you dont love your children find someone else who does.
Act like a caring adult (parent) instead of a silly teenager.

Anonymous said...

Yes! Someone has to speak for the innocent. I remember as a teenager babysitting, the parents would come pick me up to sit with their baby and the car would be filled with smoke with the windows rolled up. The small child had asthma so bad and they continued to do such. I was 12 and knew better and wanted to snap on them.

Keep your nasty habits to yourself and quit ruining everyone elses air.

So, I suppose that all these "do-gooders" who live such perfect lives and care so much for THEIR children that they have a enough time and concern to worry about MY children and impose their own morals and standards on MY family, also desire to end tree climbing, little league football and baseball, swimming, dodge ball, and eating sugary foods. I don't smoke and my children are grown, but I DO get sick of people "looking out" for others, and by "looking out" I mean trying to impose YOUR morality and concern on people who are not asking for it and don't need it. Take care of YOUR family. Leave MINE alone.

Quit telling the American people what to do. They are finding more laws for cops to do the simple jobs of pulling people over for a tail light, texting, speeding (or should I say traps because that is what they do) and now smoking??? Lets send out police force out where they are needed. Have them patrol the areas where there is true crime happening. This is just another excuse for them to set up on the highway, while they are on their phones or computers waiting for one of these issues happen and pull someone over. This is ridiculous. They need to fight crime!

I can see it now......as the officer walks up to my car....sir, I can tell by the odor, you've been smoking pot.....I thought you were smoking tobacco, and that's the reason I'm writing this ticket. Have a nice day, and please buckle-up.

Anonymous said...

How about you take your eyes (and nose) out of my car and keep them on the road where they belong.

That's how accidents happen

11:05 AM

If it was all about revenue then the fine would be more than $50!!

As an adult who endured over 20 years of smoking from both my mother and my father beginning in the womb I can tell you first hand about the negative effects on my health. I have been an asthmatic with numerous illnesses since birth. It is wrong and should be a law to protect the children.

lmclain said...

8:07....$50 is the BEGINNING. It opens the door, then the state will barge right through it...If they start with $500, don't you think there would be a bigger backlash? Remember seat belt laws?..first, get it on the books. Then increase its primacy. Same thing with cell phones. It always amazes me that there are SO many people who think they need to involve themselves in other peoples lives. How about we start looking at all of you people who think you know whats best for everyone else? Your bank accounts --- bounce a lot of checks? Those fees surely take away from your ability to provide for your family. How is your house? Nice and clean? I don't want your children exposed to filth and possible diseases. Do you yell at your kids? I wouldn't want them living in fear or suffer self-esteem issues. Had an affair in your marriage? Does your spouse drink too much? Are you a workaholic and is your family missing out on love and affection? Do you favor your own children over your step-children? Are you a single parent? LOTS of issues there...Getting the point yet? Stay OUT of people's lives and quit cheering as the government does it. You are next.

most people won't contest such a small amount. if the fine was too high, more people would take it to court to beat it or get it lowered.

contrary to popular belief, lawmakers are not completely stupid. (as far as taking our money anyway)

if we need all these laws to 'protect' us now, it's a surprise anyone survived from my generation and before.

maybe thats why so many are unhealthy and under educated nowadays. everyone has their thinking done for them now by someone in a suit.

We don't need the government to regulate everything we do. By accepting this we are just giving away more of our freedoms. If we continue we won't have any freedoms left and the government will control our every move.
