Md. Wildlife Center Helps Save Bird On Brink Of Extinction

LAUREL, Md. (WJZ)—The video you’re about to see has never been seen before.  Rare shots of whooping cranes born here in Maryland and just released to a new habitat in Louisiana, where they disappeared decades ago.  If this works and the endangered birds soar back from the brink of extinction, it will be thanks to a breeding center here in Maryland.

Denise Koch has the story.

The call of the Whooping Crane rarely heard on the brink of extinction. Maryland leads the effort to save the Whooping Crane.

A breakthrough moment for this endangered species. Ten Whooping Crane chicks, born and raised in Maryland, just released in their new home in southwest Louisiana.

“The first time I saw birds that we had produced here flying free in the wild, it was really a thrill,” said John French, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center.
