I had to file for unemployment one time back in the early 80's when I moved to a new area. That was the only time and it killed me to do it because I felt I would be better off to just get a job. After 3 WEEKS on unemployment, I did find a job.
I know things are harder now in this economy but I also know there are people abusing this program and have gotten unemployment benefits for over a year and haven't bothered to really look for a job.
They need to go back to making you go to the business and actually getting a card signed showing you actually are looking for work! Better yet - make people submit a copy of their application for employment, signed by the business owner with their response of not hiring, not hired (for whatever reason) or hired on it.
I know of two people that have claimed benefits for well over a year and neither one have actually tried to get another job because their wives work and make enough to support the family. One of them is now also drawing social security along with his UE benefits! This is not right!
I called about them but nothing happened! Guess they don't have the manpower to catch these people. Hmmm...should the UE office be hiring!?

19:27 comments are not well thought out.

1. Social Security retirement benefits are paid out based upon the taxes an individual pays.

2. Unemployment Insurance taxes are collected from employers in the event their employers lose their jobs through no fault of their own.

Now, what Governments do with this tax money is another thing. An individual is entitled to both if the taxes are paid. Just like roads are entitled to funds collected through gas taxes to keep the Transportation Trust Fund capable of doing what it is intended for.

Fire your elected officials, not your fellow citizens.
