Maryland House 38-A – Charles Otto

This has got to be the toughest call of any race on the Lower Shore.  No, it’s not because the two candidates are so bad; it’s because both are pretty darn good!
Democrat Mike McCready serves on the Somerset County Commission.  He’s a farmer and a waterman.  He’s well versed on all of the issues that 38-A voters hold so dear.
That said, Charles Otto is also a farmer.  He has held just about every leadership position available in the Maryland Farm Bureau, the Somerset County Farm Bureau, and currently serves as president of the Wicomico County Farm Bureau.  In addition, Otto has ample business experience.
Both gentlemen are active in both their churches and community.  To add insult to injury, both are true gentlemen.
The downside?  McCready has supported a tax increase as a county commissioner.  Otto is a Virginia Tech grad (editorial board member and Virginia alum G. A. Harrison claims this as a black mark, but a forgivable one).
Why Otto?  Simply, Charles Otto seems more conservative and more likely to hold firm against the Annapolis crowd.  Let’s face it; when you are in the minority it’s a bit easier to hold to principle.  When you are a member of the majority party, you’re promised stuff.  It’s too easy to forget where you came from.
Ultimately, this choice is about “feel”.  We feel that Charles Otto will serve the citizens of Maryland and 38-A best.  Yes, McCready has some experience with local government.  However, the legislature and the Somerset County Commission are in separate universes.  While both candidates have promised to serve the voters of 38-A in a conservative, common sense way, Otto takes it one step forward - Charles Otto shares what he believes.  Otto not only shares his faith in Jesus Christ (both gentlemen are committed Christians), he shares his beliefs about how we should be governed.
Promises are one thing.  A core set of beliefs are something that we can hold on to.

You got this one right!!! However, your opinion of McCready is off. Regardless though, you endorsed the right one. Thanks and you need to reconsider the Mathias/James endorsement.

Please vote for Otto.. He is the right person to send to Annapolis.. I live in Somerset and McCready has not done much to help the County

Seriously, McCready? His goal, is to be in power period; if not in 38A -than as the new County Administrator. There will be no advertising for the position because as McCready himself said, the Commissioners can hire/appoint the dog catcher as Administrator if they want to. Pretty much says it all to me; McCready is so full of himself he knows he can do anything he wants. He knows he is the "MAN" - Save this post and mark my words. The die is cast if he loses this election, Mikey wants to be the next County Administrator. He really is not much of an asset to Somerset County - We can only hope the new commissioners; lest we have new ones see the writing on the wall and make the changes in Somerset that the tax payers want and deserve; after all we are the employer and there will be another election in the future.

after reading the DT today. I'm ready to re-cancel my subscrption. I get so tired of thier BIAS and grapevine plants like Paulie200 (i.e. T. Sahler- DT editors wife E Sahler) both flaming libtards who work for the corrupt and clueless left.

You hit the nail on the head, which doesn't shock me one bit because you yourself seem to be conservative. It is a shame that there are other blogs, namely one that is so liberal and biased. I have to say that anything posted here without profanity WILL BE POSTED whether Joe agrees with it or not. TAKE NOTICE TO THIS GRINCH. Thank you Joe for letting both sides of the story show through your blog.

Oh and for anyone still considering voting for McCready, consider your vote for McCready a vote for O'Malley. McCready is a liberal tax and spend democrat. You best believe that if the big democratic government wants it, McCready will go along with it. Why would Martin O'Malley donate to McCready's campaign otherwise?

Send Common Sense to Annapolis on Nov. 2nd. And thank Joe when you see him for an exceptional blog.

Can someone please explain to me how people can say that McCready is a tax and spend liberal when while under his leadership along with the other commissioners dropped property tax in somerset county twice??? Ignorant people need to stop making wrong assumptions of people they don't know and get off their butts and do their own research of the truth! I've met Otto and he is a very nice person and I believe he has a good character. HOWEVER that does not mean that he will make a good delegate. We need someone with political experience and who isn't afraid to build new relationships across party lines to get things done.

2:33, you are so, so wrong. I have had repeated posts not put up because of questions put forth that Joe doesn't want to answer. I doubt you will see this, but it's the truth and Joe knows it. And I can assure you, there is never any profanity in my questions.

Good choice, Joe!

I live in Somerset and my property taxes have increased each year. Sorry, but I don't care what they do with the numbers and percentages in the county office building. I care how much I have to write my check for on Sept 30th each year.

Not only did O'Malley contribute to McCready's campaign...but McCready is also his Somerset County Campaign Chairperson! Mike can say whatever he wants before Nov 2nd, but I don't believe there is any way he would get out of step with O'Malley if he is sent to Annapolis.

McCready professes to be such a Christian, but the mud-slinging from his camp has been ridiculous. Anyone who knows Charles, knows that he knows as well as anyone what it means to take care of family. He has taken care of his family his entire life. Nothing has ever been given to Charles, and he is one of the hardest-working most honest men you will ever meet.

Charles has been to Annapolis in leadership roles on multiple occasions and is absolutely up to the task of representing the citizens of District 38A.

Did Elmore or Stoltzfus have political experience when they were elected? No! And both of them did a fine job for our District and so will Otto if he gets elected.

Thank you, Joe, for posting ALL comments. The Grinch is so biased and unfair. I've tried posting several comments to correct and defend what people have said about Otto that are very negative on the Grinch's site and he doesn't post them. And he was so for Otto in the beginning then turned to McCready because he advertised on his site. Good job, Grinch, way to give the voters a FAIR view of the candidates...NOT!

Otto is not the person to be delegate. He has repeatedly not known about important issues. (check his Daily times interview). He is socially awkward and this will hinder his ability to network in Annapolis.

Abraham Lincoln, one of the greatest Presidents we ever had, was thought to be "socially awkward" also.....
Vote Otto

In not endorsing Charles Otto for delegate for 38A, the Daily Times mentioned Otto's quiet demeanor, implying that it was a negative quality. As a former teacher of Charles, I have always found his taciturnity to be one of his endearing characteristics. Unlike so many politicians who are enamored by the sound of their own voices, Charles prefers to talk when he has something important to say. Like another former student of mine, Senator Stoltzfus, Charles will speak loudly and clearly against the reckless spending in Annapolis. Best wishes, Charles.
