Migrants Sell Their Things And Flee Arizona Ahead Of Crackdown

Nicaraguan mother Lorena Aguilar hawks a television set and a few clothes on the baking sidewalk outside her west Phoenix apartment block.

A few paces up the street, her undocumented Mexican neighbor Wendi Villasenor touts a kitchen table, some chairs and a few dishes as her family scrambles to get out of Arizona ahead of a looming crackdown on illegal immigrants.

"Everyone is selling up the little they have and leaving," said Villasenor, 31, who is headed for Pennsylvania. "We have no alternative. They have us cornered."

The two women are among scores of illegal immigrant families across Phoenix hauling the contents of their homes into the yard this weekend as they rush to sell up and get out before the state law takes effect on Thursday.

The law, the toughest imposed by any U.S. state to curb illegal immigration, seeks to drive more than 400,000 undocumented day laborers, landscapers, house cleaners, chambermaids and other workers out of Arizona, which borders Mexico.

It makes being an illegal immigrant a state crime and requires state and local police, during lawful contact, to investigate the status of anyone they reasonably suspect of being an illegal immigrant.

The U.S. government estimates 100,000 unauthorized migrants left Arizona after the state passed an employer sanctions law three years ago requiring companies to verify workers' status using a federal computer system. There are no figures for the number who have left since the new law passed in April.

Some are heading back to Mexico or to neighboring states. Others are staying put and taking their chances.

Every state needs to enforce the LAW ! Because the federal government refuses too !

Each state should enforce their own version of the law. It's the way our nation was set up in the beginning - a small central government with governments getting more powerful as it gets closer to the people. The federal government (obama) is wasting taxpayers time and money by trying to eliminate the rights of the states to protect their citizens, economies, and ways of life. Obama and the rest of the liberal socialists are destroying this nation one day at a time.

Love this story. All states need to do the same. As an Obama supporter, he is pissing me off trying to fight this.

That is great !! I think 1000 of them have come to Salisbury. If they would just do what it takes to be legal ?? Funny they will get a drivers lic. Most of the time they will properly register a vehicle. Less than a quarter of the time they have insurance on that same vehicle. They get an insurance binder and that is the last time the agent hears from them.

One they they will do is work and work hard.

The bottom line is illegal is just that. They can work the system they can get registered and pay like the rest of us proud Americans lol.

Look out MD here they come. Thank You O'Malley and the Annapolis Law Makers. Start looking for signs at the State Lines stating "WELCOME TO MARYLAND" the quiet secret a "Sanctuary State". Then watch our taxes explode and our State defiect explode worst than what the free spenders are doing now to usarris. MD Tax Payers are paying now through our butt. Ask our County Executive for the true facts for Wicomico County on this subject since he is pressing to raise our taxes at every chance he has. See if he will tell you about the surplus he would have with Arizona type law.

We need to enforce current immigration laws but I have to be honest when I say that illegal aliens do not bother me nearly as much as some of my fellow Americans do.The immigrants get a bad rap,but they sure have a better handle on family values than some of us.You almost never see a Hispanic family without a father in the picture,do you?Theres always a mother AND a father and everyone in the family works.
How can we seriously condemn them for having anchor babies when we have American citizens who have multiple babies they cannot care for as a way of supporting themselves. How is one worse than the other?I am sure I will take alot of heat for this comment but I dont care,I am just making a simple observation.I would rather see hardworking immigrants be given the chance to become citizens than to see more money pissed away on handouts to American citizens who arent doing anything to better themselves.

Well it looks like some laid off workers in AZ might be getting some jobs. I wonder how much better the unemployment rate would be if we kicked the 12 million+ illegal immigrants out of the country? No more paying people under the table, no more screwing legitimate immigrants or American citizens. Heavens forbid that would happen- it would be change I could believe in!

God Bless Arizonia. Shame Marylanders Don't have the Balls to do the same. Will never happen with that bowlling ball Democrat woman in office.

Now here is an issue the NAACP needs to comment on! Imagine how many more minority construction workers and low skill workers could find gainful work if companies weren't able to hire illegals on the cheap
