I Think ALL Americans Would Agree With This

When a company falls on difficult times, one of the things that seems to happen is they reduce their staff and workers. The remaining workers need to find ways to continue to do a good job or risk that their job would be eliminated as well. Wall street, and the media normally congratulate the CEO for making this type of "tough decision", and his board of directors gives him a big bonus.

I feel our government should not be immune from similar risks. I therefore am recommending the following cuts to be implemented by the next president elect.

Reduce the House of Representatives from the current 435 members to 218 members and Senate members from 100 to 50 (one per State). Also reduce remaining staff by 25%. Accomplish this over the next 8 years. (two steps / two el ections) and of course this would require some redistricting.

Some yearly monetary gains include:

$44,108,400 for elimination of base pay for congress. (267 members X $165,200 pay / member / yr.)

$97,175,000 for elimination of the above people's staff. (estimate $1.3 Mil in staff per each member of the House, and $3 Mil in staff per each member of the Senate every year)

$240,294 for the reduction in remaining staff by 25%.

$7,500,000,000 reduction in pork barrel ear-marks each year. (those members who's jobs are gone. Current estimates for total government pork earmarks are at $15 Bil lion / yr)

The remaining representatives would need to work smarter and would need to improve efficiencies. It might even be in their best interests to work together for the good of our country?

We may also expect that smaller committees might lead to a more efficient resolution of issues as well. It might even be easier to keep track of what your representative is doing.

Congress has more tools available to do their jobs than it had back in 1911 when the current number of representatives was established. (telephone, computers, cell phones to name a few)

Note: Congress did not hesitate to jump on a plane for home this week when it was a holiday, when the nation needed a real fix to the economic problems. Also, we have 3 senators that have not been doing their jobs for the past 18+ months (on the campaign trail) and still they all have been accepting full pay. These facts alone support a reduction in senators & congress.

Summary of opportunity:

$44,108,400 reduction of congress members.

$282,100,000 for elimination of the reduced house member staff.

$150,000,000 for elimination of reduced senate member staff.

$59,675,000 for 25% reduction of staff for remaining house members.

$37,500,000 for 25% reduction of staff for remaining senate members.

$7,500,000,000 reduction in pork added to bills by the reduction of congress members.

$8,073,383,400 per year, estimated total savings.

This is Billions, people!!!

Big business does these types of cuts all the time.

IF you are happy with how our government is right now, just delete this message.

IF you are not happy, I assume you know what to do.

i hate the congress.. but you would have to change the constitution or would you prefer a coup de ta happen and we get a dictatorship

absolutely ridiculous idea and who says 1/2 the people in the congress as u suggested can't spend even more money on junk

please...

Hey Joe, don't you think if the government gave each voting citizen $1 million to spend to pay off their debt, that would be cheaper than the billions the government is giving to the banks, car manufactors, etc. to bail them out. Really most people don't have a million dollars worth of debt. They could pay off their high interest credit cards, their automobiles, and their houses. And would probably have enough left to buy a new HD TV! cj

Well you make SO much... donate it!

Sorry. I do not agree. This is actually a really really bad idea.

A much better idea would be to DOUBLE or TRIPLE the size of the House of Representatives. Then it would he HARDER to "buy the government". If you make it harder to insert pork and other special interest "gifts", then we will all be better off.

The direct costs for doubling Congress would actually be minor, compared to what bad governance has cost us.

this would help some, but only first if the monster is chained around the neck with accountability. To simple cut limbs off...eventually they'd grow back. Congress will NEVER pass laws to bring accountability to themselves. It would take something like every constituent voting via internet, each voter registered by IP address {and more measures to stop fraudulent votes}. When a member is caught not voting the way the majority of their constituents voted, the proof would be there, then caught and proven guilty....there would need to be swift and harsh punishment in an effort to deter others from not following the voice of the people, their constituents. Of course even the majority of votes is subject to flaw because of the lack of good sound judgment and moral values in our up and coming generations. Also there would be media battles, to sway the citizens, far worse bias than we recently witnessed. I'm sure there are many ideas to bring accountability to the out of control monster, what ever it is it must take them by surprise....they will never vote in favor of anything that would stifle or deter greed and power, the goals of corruption.

This isnt really related but here goes. First off last night was one of the coldest nights of my life, I had to work straight threw until 4:00 this afternoon. I would just like to give a little credit to the R.E. Michel company in Salibury, didnt seem to matter if it was 2:20A.M. or when it was 4:10A.M. or even this afternoon after they had closed and the man working was gone and on with his kids friends birthday party he came back to re-open the store so a home-owner would not have to go threw the night with no heat. I have never had a store or its employees impress me so much. The R.E. Michel company is a private American owned company out of Baltimore that stood up and answered the call threw the night so people could get their heat back on, unbelievable. Compassion is the cornerstone of carachter, and if you run your business like they ran that one over the last twenty hours the profit will take care of itself. I would like to close by extending a special thank-you buddy to Craig. Over and beyond my friend, Over and beyond.

Doug,
It's T-H-R-O-U-G-H, as in with this means, or how it happened. You THREW
accountability out the window.
Ah Twice.

How bout if I threw you out a window.

You lost me.

Actually, it won't work as well as this because (if I am correct) members of the House and Senate both continue get pay and benefits after they leave office.
I think THAT is where the cuts could be made instead of decreasing the members.

Anon 8:47 Are you serious? There are over 300 million people in the US. That would be 300,000,000,000,000. Even if you only counted "Voting Citizens" it would be a ludricious amount!

No one has ever mentioned that while the American people are enduring a horrible ression, losing homes and jobs the President elect is doing his best to spend spend spend. The Inauguration is costing millions, not hundreds of thousands, millions! So much for showing the American people that every one is suffering and everyone is pulling together. So much for working together!

Best solution would be to make all Senators and Congress take at least a 50 5 cut in their pay, and eliminate all offices outside of DC. Would save a plenty and maybe get these jerks in line with reality!
