The Supreme Court gave small businesses a victory Wednesday in ordering a lower court to take another look at state laws that ban merchants from saying the higher price they charge credit customers is a “credit card surcharge.”
The small businesses claimed that laws regulating credit card surcharges, such as the one in New York that was challenged, violated their free speech. Justices agreed free speech was at stake, and sent the case back to the New York-based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to review the issue on the basis of speech and not one of price regulation.
Retailers are forced to pay fees to credit card companies when a customer pays with a card, and the New York law barred retailers from imposing a surcharge on customers who paid with a credit card — though they could offer discounts for paying with cash. Nine other states have similar laws.

Suspect Dressed in Black Allegedly Kicks in Marine Veteran’s Door, Does Not Live to Tell
A suspect dressed in black allegedly kicked in a Marine veteran’s door just after 3 a.m. Thursday in Salt Lake City and was shot dead in the living room.
According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the deceased suspect, 33-year-old Puleaga Danny Tupu, was one of two men who allegedly forced their way into the apartment. Resident and Marine veteran Brian Sant was awake at the time, as he had just arrived home from working the third shift and was sitting in his living room.
Sant fought with the men until his 29-year-old son emerged from a back room and shot both suspects. Tupu died at the scene, and the second suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
KSL reports that the surviving suspect “was shot multiple times.”

Seattle’s ‘Pronto’ Bike-Share Program Crashes Despite Millions in Tax Dollars
Once hailed as an answer to both traffic jams and global warming, Seattle’s troubled bike-sharing system, Pronto, is now slated for dismantling, city officials say.
After less than three years, and despite millions of tax dollars being dumped into the program, public bike-sharing system Pronto is slated to ground its 500-bike fleet this week,according to the Seattle Times.
The program has been a boondoggle since its $2.5 million launch in 2014, a price tag that included $1.75 million in state and federal funding. In addition, Alaska Airlines sunk $2.5 million into the system for a five-year advertising sponsorship.
Despite the glowing proclamations of politicians and the promises of the private partners in the project, the bike-sharing system was never a hit with the people of Seattle.
The program faced several problems, including a controversy over forcing riders to wear helmets, a law many felt would help kill Pronto. The helmet requirement forced the bike-sharing system to purchase hundreds of helmets and create a vending system to allow riders access, all at a heavy cost to the system.
The bike-sharing program almost immediately ran into financial trouble, and by 2016, operators said that if the city did not buy out the private interests for $1.4 million, Pronto would be forced to close.

In School Nurse's Room: Tylenol, Bandages and an Antidote to Heroin
At every school in New Rochelle, just north of the Bronx, in Westchester, there is a locked medicine cabinet in the nurse’s office, stocked with things like EpiPens for allergic reactions, inhalers for asthma, Tylenol for aches and pains.
Now, those cabinets also include naloxone, an antidote for people who are overdosing on opioids like heroin. Given as an injection or a nasal spray, naloxone can quickly revive someone who is not breathing. The city keeps it in every nurse’s office, including in its elementary schools.
“We have it the same way we have defibrillators and EpiPens, the way we have oxygen in our schools,” said Dr. Adrienne Weiss-Harrison, the school district’s medical director. “Rarely do we pull a defibrillator off the wall, but it’s there if we need it, and that’s how we approach this opportunity to have naloxone.”

Instead of snapshots and emojis, it now disseminates warnings. People are frightened, and frightened people repeat things that frighten them more:
Stay at home tomorrow. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is conducting raids in the kitchens.
Don’t send your kids to school on Wednesday. The border patrol is looking for kids with no papers.
Don’t drive down 802 on Fridays anymore.

This evening, Government House is lit blue as part of the "Light It Up Blue" campaign in recognition of "World Autism Awareness Day." I have also declared April "World Autism Awareness Month" here in Maryland in hopes of bringing attention to and leading to more research and better understanding of autism spectrum disorder.

South Carolina won its first women’s N.C.A.A. basketball title on Sunday with a victory that represented a diversity of opportunity both for coaches and teams playing for a championship.
With a 67-55 win over Mississippi State, a fellow member of the Southeastern Conference, Dawn Staley became the second African-American coach to win a title since the N.C.A.A. began sponsoring a women’s basketball tournament in 1982. Carolyn Peck coached Purdue to the 1999 championship.

MD Legislators: Should they be held Legally Accountable?

Sponsored by Morales and 78 fellow Democrat legislators, this action represents another ‘fast-one‘ by a legislative body without consent of the people that leaves many to wonder:
Is it time to hold legislators personally responsible criminally and/or civilly for the legislation they pass when it endangers the public at large?
The arguments are obvious for this measure because if legislators had to personally face repercussions, it would probably curtail a lot of legislative measures unpopular with the general public. If they had civil or possibly legal responsible for their complicity in violating Federal Immigration Laws, then it would make perfect logical sense they would stop endangering their communities under the guise of feel-good social justice warrioring. The truth is, they are needlessly enabling criminals for false sense of altruism while putting our families and friends in serious harm’s way. This is not their job objective – never has been; never will be.
When querying other states who have the same predicament, many voters have stated they did not want to become sanctuary areas. Surprisingly, as much as 86% of the largely liberal California population indicates they don’t want sanctuary status. Residents know all too well what havoc illegal aliens have reeked on cities like Los Angeles and San Diego for decades.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan (R) has already stated he will VETO the bill should it land on his desk; however, the Maryland Assembly has a nasty history of overriding his VETOs; such as the bill where they forced solar energy on Maryland, a big loser for the state’s residents – without voter approval.
In the meantime, it is worth a shot that should you become a victim of a crime perpetrated by an illegal alien, get a lawyer and find out which representative in addition to Morales to sue — file the lawsuit (and by all means, let us know!)
Ironically, this is puts our state in a dicey situation because they were looking to woe the federal government into building the new FBI Headquarters in the area; however, this defiance of federal law is not the way to win friends (or contracts) and influence people in the District of Columbia – especially with Federal Law Enforcement Agencies.
What are Maryland legislators thinking? Better question is: Are they even thinking at all?

Just eat, 6:05pm, at the taco Bell / Kentucky Fried Chicken in front of KMart. Very terrible experience. The help could care less if you got waited on and there was no need in it , since I counted 6 workers. There were no condiments, napkins or straws out. You had to ask for them. the counters appeared to not have been cleaned for hours. The floors had not been swept or mopped for hours, since there was food and drinks spilled and walked in. Trash was all over the floors and under the tables. I can only guess what the food area looked like or when it was last cleaned properly. I do not or would not recommend this place to eat. It is a wonder the Health Dept. has not closed them down. Hopefully those reading this will stay away from there. Hopefully I will not get food poison since I was stupid and eat the food instead of throwing it away and go over to the gas station to get me home.

In this area, people sometimes slow traffic down in the left lane, anyway, creating a convoy of agitated highway users who can’t get around because too many other cars are passing them on the right already.
But should failure to abide by those lessons, learned along ago by some drivers, result in a ticket?
According to one Maryland lawmaker, the answer is yes.
