Liquid nicotine: Just a teaspoon could kill

It can be bought on the Internet in flavors like chocolate and bubble gum—and just a teaspoon could kill a child: The New York Timestakes a look at liquid nicotine, the e-liquid used in e-cigarettes, which it describes as a "powerful neurotoxin ... far more dangerous than tobacco." And with good reason: Reports of accidental liquid nicotine poisonings rose 300% from 2012 to 1,351 cases last year, with 2014's figure expected to be double that.

The victims, many children under the age of four, can experience vomiting and seizures after being exposed to even a modest amount orally or through the skin.

The Maryland State Police Has Enacted The Snow Emergency Plan for Worcester County.

Worcester County Sheriff's Office
The Maryland State Police has enacted the Snow Emergency Plan for Worcester County. This plan means that any disabled vehicles will be removed from roadways immediately and that vehicles must utilize snow tire chains, or have a vehicle equipped with snow rated tires(must tires are now rated for snow). In other words if you don't need to go out, stay indoors and allow the Highway crews to do the difficult job of clearing the roadways. Most of this county is seeing 4-6 inches with snow still falling and with roadways getting colder, the potential for icing over bridges and roads increase. If you have to leave for work, please let your loved one know you have arrived. Allow extra time getting to work. The commute to work will be slow going tomorrow for some of us. At this time, no word on Schools.

Homeland Security Exercise Targets “Free Americans Against Socialist Tyranny”

Leaked documents reveal plan to counter online dissent during martial law

Leaked Homeland Security documents obtained by Infowars reveal details of a joint DHS/FEMA national exercise set to take place this week, one of the components of which revolves around an effort to counter online dissent by a group called “Free Americans Against Socialist Tyranny,” which is disgruntled at the imposition of martial law after an earthquake in Alaska.

The document again underscores the federal government’s obsession with characterizing libertarians and conservatives as some kind of extremist radical threat.

The document (PDF) was leaked by an individual affiliated with Stewart Rhodes’ Oathkeepers organization and passed on to Infowars. It is entitled National Exercise Program – Capstone Exercise 2014 – Scenario Ground Truth.

Abandoned 27 Years Ago, 'Burger King Baby' Finds Mom

Less than three weeks after a plea for her birth mother to come forward blazed through media outlets across the globe, Katheryn Deprill has met the woman who abandoned her 27 years ago in an Allentown Burger King.

Deprill, known internationally as the "Burger King Baby," got a lifetime of questions answered when she met her mother Monday. It was the first time the two had contact since the mother, who has remained in the Lehigh Valley, left Deprill at the South Fourth Street restaurant on Sept. 15, 1986.

"Oh my God, I'm so excited!" Deprill said Tuesday. "I have literally not wiped the smile off my face. I never in a million years thought I'd find her."

Press Release: State Board Sets Process for School Calendar Waivers

The Maryland State Board of Education today voted to allow local school systems to apply for waivers of up to five days from the 180-instructional day requirement, and authorized the State Superintendent to make the waiver decisions on a case-by-case basis.

Board members also authorized up to two-day waivers from the 170-instructional days required by nonpublic schools in the State.

“Students need time in class to succeed, and we take Maryland’s instructional day requirement very seriously,” said Dr. Charlene Dukes, president of the Maryland State Board of Education. “At the same time, this has been a very unusual winter, and it requires us to take unusual steps.”

No timetable has been set for decisions on the waiver requests. Fifteen school systems have already requested waivers, and others may do so in the coming weeks.

Maryland residents – and Maryland school systems in particular – have been working through a very active winter, with all 24 school systems exceeding the number of inclement weather days that had been built into their calendars. Garrett County, in far western Maryland, has been closed 20 days, while Allegany County has been closed for 16 days.

The Maryland State Board had already allowed school systems to open classrooms on holidays to make up for some of the lost instructional time. Six systems opened on President’s Day and, thus far, five have made the request to open on the Monday after Easter.

The State Board’s action is not unprecedented. In calendar year 2009-2010, Maryland also trudged through a harsh winter. The State Board authorized the State Superintendent to waive up to five instructional days in that instance.

On Gloria Steinem's Birthday, Comments That Will Shock Today's Young Women

Liberal feminist icon Gloria Steinem turns 80 today. She once said that “A feminist is anyone who recognizes the equality and full humanity of women and men.”

Yet for all her talk about equality and rights, one right she worked diligently to deny millions of both sexes was the right to be born and celebrate birthdays of their own. Once again, in her view, a “woman’s right” trumped the rights of another—in this case, an unborn child.

The fact the Supreme Court is hearing a case today about employers being forced to include abortion-inducing drugs in their health plans—even if it violates an employer’s conscience—is in many respects a testament to the work of Steinem and others. It’s a good example of how the “equal rights” she championed result in stepping on the rights of others.

Obamacare Turns 4, Just 1.4% of Uninsured Americans Covered

Four years of Obamacare have produced health insurance for just 1.4% of uninsured Americans.

According to CNBC, of the 5 million people the Obama administration claims have enrolled in Obamacare, just 715,000 are previously uninsured Americans who have chosen and paid for new insurance. As theWashington Post notes, there are 48.6 million uninsured Americans. That means that after four years of being the law of the land, Obamacare–whose purported purpose was to cover the uninsured–has provided coverage for just 1.4% of uninsured Americans.

Resume:
Milton, DE- The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Route 1 north of Milton.

The incident occurred around 1:50 p.m. this afternoon as Joseph D. Waples was operating a 2007 Freightliner Bobtail truck tractor westbound from Truitt Road crossing over Coastal Highway (SR1) and continuing westbound on Clifton Road. The truck tractor crossed the northbound lanes of SR1 and entered the center cross-over where it came to a stop at the stop sign. The truck then continued into the southbound lanes of Rt 1 and into the path of a 2012 Chrysler Town & Country being operated by Margaret M. Clift. The Chrysler, which was traveling southbound in the right lane, then struck the right rear tandem tires of the truck causing it to rotate clockwise and come to a stop in the intersection. The truck continued westbound and rotated approximately 180 degrees before coming to a stop in the eastbound lanes of Clifton Road.

Margaret M. Clift, who was properly restrained, was removed from the scene and transported to Milford Memorial Hospital by EMS were she was later pronounced dead. Her husband, James C. Clift who was also properly restrained was removed from the scene by EMS and transported to Beebe Medical Center where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Joseph Waples was properly restrained and was uninjured in the crash.

Congress Mulls Licensing Speech?

Schumer: Senate has votes for media shield law ... A supporter of a bill to protect reporters and the news media from having to reveal confidential sources said Friday the measure has the backing of the Obama administration and the support of enough senators to move ahead this year. Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, the No. 3 Democrat in the Senate, spoke optimistically about prospects for the measure, identifying five Republicans who would join with Democrats and independents on a bill that he said would address a constitutional oversight. While the first amendment protects freedom of the press, "there is no first amendment right for gathering information," Schumer said at The New York Times' Sources and Secrets Conference on the press, government and national security. – AP

Dominant Social Theme: Some free speech is supposed to be more protected than others.

Free-Market Analysis: If it weren't tough enough to distinguish fact from propaganda, the US government is surely getting ready to hand out licenses to "approved" reporting facilities ... sooner or later anyway.

Of course, that's not how it's being reported by these same facilities. They're explaining that it is a "bill" that will address "gathering information." See the above excerpt from the AP for Schumer's eloquent perspective.

The US Constitution – despite its many apparent loopholes – flatly ascertains what the Congress can do to restrict free speech: Nothing. But that particular perspective was contradicted long ago by a series of laws aimed at legislating against "commercial speech" and even against speech that metaphorically shouted "fire" in a crowded cinema.

The Beltway Party, Left and Right, vs. Rand Paul

In case you hadn’t noticed, the DC political class is lining up against U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY). Indeed, the left and right wings of what might be called the Beltway Party have jointly decided that Paul is unacceptable: He and his liberty-minded, live-and-let-live constitutionalist views are a threat to both of those wings.

That is, the establishment left fears Paul because he is an enemy of big government, and the establishment right fears Paul because he is an enemy of their big government--their big government, that is, of social-issue regulation, surveillance, and foreign wars.

"[I] got out, got information, changed the tire, went back, put my items in the tool box, got in the truck and about 30 seconds later, I got hit," recalled Mertz.
