Social media giant Facebook Inc <FB.O> and Alphabet Inc’s <GOOGL.O> Google on Thursday recommended their San Francisco Bay area employees work from home to minimize the risk of spreading coronavirus.
Facebook said it is “strongly recommending that all Bay area employees and contingent staff work from home starting Friday.”
The decision is “based on the guidance from Santa Clara County on Thursday”, Anthony Harrison, Facebook spokesperson, said in an emailed statement to Reuters.
Employees and contractors involved in the site’s safety and security will continue to work on site, while all Bay Area events will remain canceled, according to the statement.

West Virginia man sentenced up to 775 years in prison for filming himself sexually abusing infant
A West Virginia man who recorded himself and his then-fiancee sexually abusing an infant was handed a life sentence of up to 775 years in prison.
Richard Smith II, 41, was sentenced to a minimum of 205 years in prison Wednesday for filming them abusing his then-fiancee’s, Roseanne Thompson, infant granddaughter in 2015. The couple has since broken up.
“I think that you are one of the most evil persons who I’ve ever encountered,” Kanawha Circuit Judge Tera Salango said in court.
A jury found him guilty of 11 counts of first-degree sexual abuse, four counts of sexual assault, and five counts of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian, custodian or person in a position of trust.

Carroll Co. Horse Trainer Shows Off Newly Tamed Chincoteague Pony At Horse World Expo
CARROLL COUNTY, MD. (WJZ) — The nation’s leading horse entertainers came together last weekend at the Horse World Expo in Pennsylvania, and one Carroll County trainer showed off her very own Chincoteague pony.
His name is John Wayne, a pony who was a challenge to train but like the movie star he’s become famous after he was tamed, and now the talents of his breed have become better known because of the efforts of his trainer.
Summer Barrick has made a name for herself by training the ponies, usually wild horses that live on Assateague Island. She trains them at Spring Brook Farm in Carroll County.
“They’ve just always held a certain spot in my heart,” Barrick said.

Federal agents raid dozens of homes in crackdown on 'birth tourism'
Federal agents swarmed three dozen homes in southern California in an operation cracking down on the “birth tourism” industry.
Birth tourism involves operators charging pregnant women from foreign countries tens of thousands of dollars to stay in "maternity hotels" in the United States until their children are born as American citizens. They also oftentimes receive meals and transportation to and from the doctor and hospital visits.

NASA Worker Michael Hetle Accused In Death Of Maryland National Guardsman Javon Prather
A NASA employee and former police officer is facing charges after police say he shot and killed his neighbor, a Maryland National Guardsman in Springfield, Virginia.
Michael Hetle, 52, was arrested Tuesday after the fatal shooting of Specialist Javon Prather, 24, Fairfax County police said in a news release.
The men had argued for years, according to Prather’s mother, Shavon Prather.
“(Hetle) would call the HOA (home owners association) and say there was dog poop in their backyard,” Prather told The Washington Post. “He would call and complain when they put out trash. Anything he could do to scold them and to get them in trouble.”

Republican-Backed Md. Bill Targets Baltimore Crime, Would Allow Hogan To Declare State Of Emergency
BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A bill backed by more than a dozen Maryland Republican lawmakers targeting Baltimore crime would allow Gov. Larry Hogan to declare a state of emergency based on a community’s homicide rate.
Senate Bill 1078 would allow the governor to declare a state of emergency in any community that sees at least three homicides per 100,000 residents in a 30-day period. To qualify for the declaration, Baltimore would need to see more than 18 homicides in a month.
So far in 2020, Baltimore has seen 51 homicides and 92 non-fatal shootings, police said Tuesday morning.
“There’s clearly a problem with crime in Baltimore City,” Senator Bob Cassilly said. “The murder rates just keep rising to new record levels every month.”

SEN. WALDSTREICHER CALLS FOR POT EXPUNGEMENTS
Sen. Jeff Waldstreicher (D-Montgomery) on Thursday urged a panel of Maryland lawmakers to approve legislation that would provide for the automatic expungement of criminal records related to marijuana possession in cases where no other convictions took place.
“Senate Bill 699 as introduced provides automatic expungement for the mere possession of marijuana where the mere possession of marijuana was the only conviction and was not part of a series of other drug crimes that might include more serious offenses – like dealing and the like,” Waldstreicher said at a Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee hearing in Annapolis.
Waldstreicher. the lead sponsor of the bill, noted that the House version of the bill is slightly different than its Senate companion. Del. David Moon (D-Montgomery) is the lead sponsor of the House bill. The House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the legislation on Jan. 28. Both bills were previously introduced during the 2017 legislative session. Waldstreicher relayed that the House bill provides for the “automatic shielding” of records rather than automatic expungement.

Cannabis case dropped, for now
With insufficient evidence against him, Jacob Dylan Forrester, 20, of Berlin was free to go after a prosecutor requested a nolle prosequi, or dismissal, of his case, which involved a suspected marijuana growing operation in his home.
On Oct. 29, 2019, a property damage call led Ocean City police to Forrester’s 57th Street apartment, where they found roughly five pounds of suspected cannabis. Also discovered were what appeared to be several large cannabis plants, two kitchen-sized trash bags full of the plant material, as well as tools used to weigh and designate sales prices.
Forrester was arrested, and charged with possession of more than 10 grams of cannabis, possession with intention to distribute and possession of a gun replica.

Pentagon linguist charged with espionage for passing secrets to man linked to Hezbollah
A female linguist working for the Pentagon in Iraq was charged with handing over classified information about on-the-ground human sources assisting the United States to a Hezbollah-tied foreign national with whom she was romantically linked, according to the Justice Department.
Mariam Taha Thompson, 61, was charged on Wednesday in a Washington federal court with “transmitting highly sensitive classified national defense information to a foreign national” to a man with “apparent connections” to the Lebanese-based Hezbollah, a foreign terrorist organization tied to Iran. If convicted, she could face life in prison.
The 12-page FBI affidavit put together by Special Agent Danielle Ray said the information that Thompson passed along “included classified national defense information regarding active human assets — including their true names” and that by compromising the identities of these human assets, Thompson placed the lives of both the human assets and U.S. military members in “grave danger.”

In the White House photo (right), Pence is seen seated in a circle with the task force as they bowed their heads in prayer, with the others remaining in the room standing while bowing their heads – 17 in all.
With Twitter and other platforms taking issue with the vice president – a self-described evangelical Christian – his latest prayer has "sparked a heated debate on social media about religion, politics and the efficacy of prayer," according to Christian Headlines.
A writer for New York Magazine and Harper's Magazine, Thomas Chatterton Williams, headed up one wave of derision over the photo on social media channels, generating nearly 10K comments, 5.5K retweets and 20K likes.

Republicans have strong leads in two of those districts, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
“California is a blue state, but parts of it are purple,” a Sonoma State University political science professor said. “It will be a difficult road for the Democrats to run the table again this year.”

Governor Larry Hogan Declares State of Emergency, Expands Statewide Response to Novel Coronavirus
Three Confirmed Maryland Cases in Montgomery County, Patients In Quarantine And In Good Condition
ANNAPOLIS, MD—Tonight, Governor Larry Hogan announced the state’s first positive cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and declared a state of emergency to ramp up Maryland’s coordinated response across all levels of government.
“In order to further mobilize all available state resources in response to this threat to public health, I have issued a proclamation declaring a state of emergency in Maryland,” said Governor Hogan. “With this declaration, I am officially authorizing and directing the Maryland Department of Health and the Maryland Emergency Management Agency to ramp up coordination among all state and local agencies and enable them to fast-track coordination with our state and local health departments and emergency management teams.”
This afternoon, Maryland’s State Public Health Laboratory in Baltimore confirmed three positive cases in Montgomery County. The patients, who contracted the virus while traveling overseas, are in good condition and are in quarantine at their homes.
Earlier this week, the Hogan administration introduced emergency legislation granting the governor the authority to transfer resources from the state’s rainy day fund for Maryland’s novel coronavirus response. Additionally, the governor submitted a supplemental budget today for Fiscal Year 2021 (FY21) that requests $10 million for emergency coronavirus preparedness expenses.
“While today’s news may seem overwhelming, this is not a reason to panic,” continued the governor. “Marylanders should go to work or go to school tomorrow just as they normally would. At the same time, I want to continue to remind everyone to prepare themselves and continue to stay informed. I am confident in our state’s ability to respond effectively to these three cases of coronavirus as well as to any future cases, and to be a national leader in responding to this situation and in developing treatments and perhaps even a vaccine.”

While Governor Hogan is pushing to help retirees with the biggest tax cut in more than two decades, legislators proposed the largest tax hike in state history.
- This would have been the largest tax hike in state history: more than 3.5 times the gas tax hike of 2013, and nearly five times the sales tax hike of 2007. When this tax hike was first proposed two weeks ago, Governor Hogan said, “It’s a tax on working families, it’s a tax on single moms... it’s not ever going to happen while I’m governor, I can promise you.”
- This tax hike would have hit hundreds of everyday expenses and errands, including haircuts, oil changes, dry cleaning, and online streaming services. It would have had devastating impacts on owning a home (realtors, inspections, repairs and renovations), getting married (photographers, florists, caterers), raising a family (babysitting, day camps, veterinary care), and even dying (funerals, cremation, cemeteries) in the State of Maryland.
- This tax hike, about $1,900 per Maryland family, would have been so massive that it added up to more than all of the O'Malley administration's tax hikes combined.

Harris Applauds Trump Administration Release of Additional H-2B Visas
WASHINGTON, DC: On March 5th, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced its intent to release 35,000 additional H-2B visas for the summer season of Fiscal Year 2020. Congressman Andy Harris (MD-01) has spearheaded the effort in Congress to secure the timely release of supplemental visas. He sent a letter, signed by a total of 151 members of the House and 38 Senators, urging Acting Secretary Wolf to release, as quickly as possible, additional H-2B visas to meet seasonal labor demands.

“Some 328 illegal immigrants from China have been nabbed jumping the U.S.-Mexico border so far this year, according to Homeland Security data that raises the prospect a coronavirus carrier could sneak into the country via the border,” The Washington Times reported. “Three other people from South Korea — another country with rapidly spreading cases — have also been arrested at the border, as have 122 people from the Dominican Republican, where the coronavirus has now been detected.”
The coronavirus, which originated in China in December, has infected more than 91,000 people worldwide and killed well over 3,100 people – with most of the infections and deaths occurring in China.

Blue Bell ice cream licker sentenced to 30 days in jail
PORT ARTHUR, Texas (KBMT) — The Texas man who was charged after posting a video of himself licking ice cream at Walmart was sentenced Wednesday.
Judge Terrance Holmes sentenced 24-year-old D'Adrien Anderson to 30 days in jail with an additional 180 days probation over two years. Anderson is also required to complete 100 hours of community service.
"As a condition of probation, Anderson is required to pay a fine of $1000 and restitution in the amount of $1,565 to Blue Bell Creameries," according to a Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office news release.

(March 5, 2020, Salisbury, MD) On March 5, 2020, a raccoon from the area of Young Avenue and East Church Street in Salisbury tested positive for rabies. The Wicomico County Health Department is advising all residents to be aware of their surroundings and avoid contact with all wild or stray animals.
Rabies is a preventable viral disease that exists in the saliva of mammals and is transmitted from animal to animal or from animal to human by biting and/or scratching. The virus can also be spread by licking, when infected saliva makes contact with open cuts or wounds, and with the mouth, eyes, and nose. If left untreated in humans and animals, rabies is fatal.

Rehoboth Beach- The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal industrial accident that occurred earlier today.
The incident occurred on March 5, 2020 at approximately 9:56 a.m., when Troopers were dispatched to Colonial Lane, Rehoboth Beach in reference to an industrial accident. Upon arrival, Troopers located an individual pinned beneath a skid steer.
The victim, a 49-year-old male of Millsboro, DE was pronounced deceased at the scene. The victim was turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science where an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause and manner of death. His name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin.
The case continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Major Crimes Unit.

The results of a joint effort between BBC's Newsround and marketing firm Savanta ComRes, which were released Tuesday, showed nearly 1 in 5 children admitted to having a bad dream about climate change. Seventeen percent of respondents indicated their sleeping and eating habits had been affected by their concerns.
The study asked 2,000 young people between the ages of 8 and 16 a series of questions about their attitudes on climate change and the environment. An overwhelming majority, 73%, said they were worried about the state of the planet.

The Arizona House passed a “pro-woman” bill Tuesday that would ban biological males who identify as female from competing on girls’ sports teams.
Republican state Rep. Nancy Barto sponsored House Bill 2706, which would require a genetic test to prove the biological sex of a student. The bill passed along party lines after an hourslong debate, at a vote of 31-29.
“Shot puts are heavier for boys. Girls’ basketballs are smaller. It makes a difference,” Barto said. “This is a pro-woman bill. This is a bill to save women’s sports because, frankly, it won’t be saved if we don’t clarify the law.”

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland universities, colleges and community colleges would have to clearly outline free and lower-cost course materials, along with textbook and other fees associated with a course, in the institution’s catalog, per a bill under the Maryland General Assembly, should it pass.
The idea came out of a University of Maryland Student Government Association meeting, according to the group’s director of government affairs, Samay Kindra, who pitched the idea to the House sponsor of the bill, Delegate Vaughn Stewart, D-Montgomery.
“We’re not asking for money or anything, we’re asking for information,” Kindra, a senior international business and economics major at the University of Maryland, told Capital News Service last week.

OCEAN CITY — A local woman faces 24 total charges, including multiple counts of first-degree burglary, for an alleged break-in spree in the middle of the afternoon last Sunday.
Around 4 p.m. last Sunday, an Ocean City Police Department (OCPD) officer responded to a residence on Sunset Drive for a reported breaking and entering that had already occurred. The officer arrived at the address and observed two units with broken windows and glass on the ground directly next to the front doors. In addition, one unit had an open window with the screen cut.
The officer met with a victim who lived in one of the units who told police he left his residence around 9:40 a.m., returned hours later and discovered the window was broken and someone had entered the unit and stolen various items, according to police reports.

Mother of San Bernardino terrorist to plead guilty to destroying evidence of plot that killed 14
The mother of one of the San Bernardino terrorists who killed 14 people and injured 22 others at a Christmas party in 2015 will plead guilty to destroying evidence later this month.
Rafia Sultana Shareef, also known as Rafia Farook, will plead guilty to destroying a map her son, Syed Rizwan Farook, allegedly drew to plan the shooting, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California.
"Shareef admitted that she knew her son had produced the documents, and she believed it was directly related to his planning on the IRC attack," her plea agreement claims.

DEL. HARTMAN: WORKERS IN RISKY JOBS NEED GUNS
Del. Wayne Hartman (R-Wicomico-Worcester) urged fellow lawmakers on Wednesday to pass legislation that would allow workers in high-risk professions — including firefighters, EMTS, probation officers, nurses and security guards at houses of worship — to carry handguns.
“This bill would require the secretary of the state police to issue a permit to carry, wear or transport a handgun to a person who meets certain requirements and is employed in certain professions. Those assumed-risk professions would be correctional officers, probation officers, firefighters, EMTs, rescue-squad members, security guards for churches and religious organizations, physicians, physician’s assistants, nurses and nurse practitioners,” Hartman said at a House Judiciary Committee hearing in Annapolis.
“Unfortunately, as times change, there has been many events that lead up to the need for this bill. In 2018 an off-duty correctional officer was killed on the street in Queens, New York. In 2016, a female correctional officer was killed in Brooklyn in a drive-by shooting. In Virginia, in 2019, a firefighter was killed on the night of Thanksgiving. She had just spent her Thanksgiving delivering Thanksgiving meals to the most unfortunate — only to be shot and killed that night while responding to a call.”

Trump calls for 'serious action' after Schumer says Supreme Court justices will 'pay the price' for abortion vote
President Trump suggested that Sen. Chuck Schumer should be arrested or removed from office after the Senate minority leader threatened two Supreme Court justices.
Schumer, a Democrat from New York, said on Wednesday that Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh would "pay the price" if they choose to uphold a Louisiana law that mandates abortion doctors be preapproved to check their patients into a nearby hospital. Both justices are Trump appointees.
"This is a direct & dangerous threat to the U.S. Supreme Court by Schumer. If a Republican did this, he or she would be arrested, or impeached. Serious action MUST be taken NOW!" Trump tweeted on Wednesday evening.

A Virginia elementary school clinic aide convicted of stealing students' ADHD prescription medications and replacing them with other drugs was sentenced on Monday to five years in prison.
Caitlin Poytress, 39, was working for Clover Hill Elementary School in Chesterfield in May 2019 when the school's registered nurse began to suspect she was tampering with student medications, according to a summary of evidence by a Chesterfield Assistant Commonwealth´s Attorney.
The nurse noticed pill bottles were out when they shouldn't have been, medications were missing from their normal locations and pill count logs showed unexplained changes and revisions, prosecutors alleged.
