Carroll Co. Horse Trainer Shows Off Newly Tamed Chincoteague Pony At Horse World Expo

CARROLL COUNTY, MD. (WJZ) — The nation’s leading horse entertainers came together last weekend at the Horse World Expo in Pennsylvania, and one Carroll County trainer showed off her very own Chincoteague pony.

His name is John Wayne, a pony who was a challenge to train but like the movie star he’s become famous after he was tamed, and now the talents of his breed have become better known because of the efforts of his trainer.

Summer Barrick has made a name for herself by training the ponies, usually wild horses that live on Assateague Island. She trains them at Spring Brook Farm in Carroll County.

“They’ve just always held a certain spot in my heart,” Barrick said.

I took a bullet from a National park and got a $100 ticket since taking anything from a national park is not allowed, yet this Pony thing is okay? How come?

1:36 you are a special kind of stupid, aren't you. The pony came from the Chincoteague Fire Department's herd.

3:11 that they stole from the Island that is under federal govt. protection as a national seashore. That is what the guy is sayin, how can they drive those horses off the island and keep the babies. Can I go and grab a Sitka Deer baby if I want one?

One of the few ponies that survived the swim and Carnival Auction. I grew up going to Pony Penning and seeing people buying these feral foals and shoving them into the back seats of their cars. The last time I attended the Parade was the fire Dept. rolling out and showing off all this heavy equipment like and Island third World Nation. Go to the Misty Museum the local that stuffed her obviously never taxidermied or stuffed anything larger than a swamp rat. It's funny how down home nostalgic notions become business. People don't even know or remember Marguerite Henry that wrote the sappy book to begin with.

How are you people so uninformed? There is an agreement with Assateague National Park / Federal Government to tend / feed have Vets to keep check on the Ponies and the Chincoteague Vol Fire Dept would be allowed to sell a given amount of the herd of certain age to keep the herd at a manageable size so the Island would not be over populated. To summarize the reason the Vol Fire Dept could sell a certain amount of the Ponies. The money raised is a fund raiser that assist in the care of the Ponies. They do a great job.
