States are raising the age of consent to protect children from forced marriage. No state has gone as far as Delaware.
Child marriages are more common than you think. Roughly 200,000 minors have gotten married since the start of the century. Nearly 90 percent of those child marriages involve a young bride, under the age of 18, and an older man -- sometimes decades older. Under such circumstances, says Arizona state Rep. Michelle Ugenti-Rita, “it’s not difficult to think of all the potential abuses.”
Legislators have heard testimony from women who were forced to marry their rapists when they were as young as 11. There have also been scattered reports of marriage being used as a tool in child trafficking. Ugenti-Rita sponsored a new law, enacted in April, which banned marriages for children under the age of 16, while requiring 16- and 17-year-olds to receive permission from their parents. When a minor is getting married, the age gap between the bride and groom, under the new law, can be no greater than three years.
Advocacy groups such as the Tahirih Justice Center and Unchained At Last are pushing states to raise the minimum age for marriage to 18, without exceptions. Last month, Delaware became the first state to fully ban child marriage, even with parental approval. But it’s proving to be a tough sell elsewhere. Lawmakers have shown themselves open to imposing higher age limits and to adding safeguards for minors allowed to marry, such as parental consent. Florida and Kentucky both passed laws this year raising the floor for child marriages to 17 and 18, respectively, following similar actions taken since 2016 in Connecticut, New York, Texas and Virginia.

Report: Sessions Is Key Witness in Mueller Inquiry into Trump Obstruction
Attorney General Jeff Sessions is reportedly a key witness in Robert Mueller’s inquiry into whether President Donald J. Trump obstructed the Russia investigation.
During a March 2017 meeting at Mar-a-Lago, President Trump asked Sessions to unrecuse himself from the collusion probe — a request the Attorney General declined.
“The confrontation, which has not been previously reported, is being investigated by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, as are the president’s public and private attacks on Mr. Sessions and efforts to get him to resign. Mr. Trump dwelled on the recusal for months, according to confidants and current and former administration officials who described his behavior toward the attorney general,” reports the New York Times.
Special counsel lawyers have grilled White House aides about the President’s relationship with Sessions in an effort to learn whether the Attorney General acted in any way to influence the investigation. Tennessee woman, 24, is arrested for 'making up claims she was sexually assaulted by a man in his home'
A Tennessee woman has been arrested after she faked a sexual assault story.
Sarah Elizabeth Suddarth, 24, told officials a Jamestown man sexually assaulted her at his home in December 2016.
However, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says after looking into the case, the incident never occurred, WHNT reported.

Police Need Warrants to Search Cars in Driveways, Rules High Court
The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended the Constitution's privacy protection to include vehicles that are parked on a home's driveway or carport, ruling that police need a search warrant before they may inspect them.
In general, police may look closely at cars that are parked along public roads, without the need for a search warrant.
But in Tuesday's 8-1 ruling, the justices said a vehicle parked in a carport or on private property adjacent to a home deserves the privacy protection of the 4th Amendment.
"When a law enforcement officer physically intrudes" on private property and walks up to a house to look for evidence, "a search within the meaning of the 4th Amendment has occurred," wrote Justice Sonia Sotomayor in Collins vs. Virginia. "Such conduct thus is presumptively unreasonable without a warrant."

Facing Criminal Charges and Sex Scandal, Missouri Gov. Greitens Resigns. Meet His Replacement.
Five months after a sex and blackmail scandal broke, Gov. Eric Greitens will resign facing potential criminal charges. His replacement, a conservative with good lawmaker relations, is likely to achieve what Greitens could not.
Missouri is switching governors. It would be difficult to find a replacement as different from outgoing Gov. Eric Greitens as Mike Parson, the state's lieutenant governor.
Parson is a much more conventional politician than Greitens, a former Navy SEAL who had never held an elected position before and announced his resignation on Tuesday, five months after news broke about a sex and blackmail scandal.
Greitens faced possible impeachment. He left office as part of a plea deal to get criminal charges of illegally obtaining a campaign donor list dismissed, according to the St. Louis prosecutor's office. Earlier on Tuesday, a judge ruled that Greitens and his allies have to comply with a Missouri House subpoena regarding his dark money campaign groups. He could also still be charged with an invasion-of-privacy felony in connection with his extramarital affair.
Greitens was a brash and combative political outsider. His manner of attacking legislators, including fellow Republicans, left him without political cover once he was embroiled in scandal.

Hillary Clinton is either the gift that keeps on giving or else like houseguests who overstayed their welcome, depending on your perspective. Along with Maxine Waters and Nancy Pelosi, these three are the witches of Macbeth, circled around a CNN microphone chanting, "Double, double, toil and trouble, Trump's a pig, stole the election, and should be impeached." Sorry for the non-rhyme; maybe Jesse Jackson can help with that part of the incantation.
If Democrats hope to beat Trump in 2020, or take either house of Congress in November, they need fresh ideas besides Russia and Stormy and a new face of the party rather than a two-time loser who is quite unlikeable. And there is still the nagging issue about her health.
The media are willing and eager to look in every nook and cranny for evidence of Trump-Russian collusion, and to date, they have come up with nothing. But which journalists have investigated Mrs. Clinton's health? The presidency is a demanding job with a similarly vigorous campaign required to earn the votes to become president. Two Northern Ireland priests said those who advocated to change Ireland’s restrictive abortion laws should not be “hypocritical and dishonest” on their wedding day.
Two Northern Ireland priests have said Catholics who voted Yes in the Eighth Amendment abortion referendum, which was won by 66.4%, should not be allowed to marry in a Catholic Church.
Father Patrick McCafferty, the Parish Priest of Corpus Christi parish, in Ballymurphy, West Belfast, wrote on his views in the Belfast Telegraph. He said those who voted Yes to change Ireland’s restrictive abortion laws can “get married in City Hall” to avoid being “hypocritical and dishonest by using the Church for a day".

I thought of this exchange last week when the New York Times revealed that the Transportation Security Administration has created a secret watchlist for troublesome passengers.
The TSA justified the list by saying that its screeners were assaulted 34 times last year, but did not release any details about the alleged assaults.

The proliferation of state licensing requirements is already bad enough. There's no need for cities to pile their own mandates on.
Last year, New York City made headlines for cracking down on unlicensed dog sitters. While forcing well-meaning pet sitters to get a kennel license might seem like an only-in-Manhattan problem, the reality is that localities across the country are rife with absurd occupational licensing requirements.
To date, much of the criticism around the issue has focused on state governments' licensing mandates -- such as Louisiana's for florists or Massachusetts' for fortune-tellers -- but municipalities are often just as bad. One of the worst offenders is Detroit.
According to the Mackinac Center's Jarrett Skorup, Detroit requires licenses for at least 60 occupations. While licensing may be appropriate for some professions, such as engineers and doctors, nearly half of the occupations licensed by Detroit are already licensed by the state of Michigan. Detroit's requirements simply layer on more fees and mandates. Further, many of the occupations licensed in Detroit are not licensed in other cities in the Wolverine State, which raises questions about whether those local licenses are really necessary.

An Unsecure Border and the Opioid Crisis: The Urgent Need for Action to Save Lives

Thank you for the opportunity to appear before you today to discuss the opioid crisis in the United States, particularly along the border here in Arizona, and the efforts of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to target, investigate, disrupt, and dismantle the criminal networks responsible for the manufacturing, smuggling, and distribution of dangerous opioids.
As the largest investigative agency within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) enforces more than 400 federal criminal statutes to include the Immigration and Nationality Act under (Title 8), U.S. customs laws under (Title 19), general federal crimes under (Title 18), and the Controlled Substances Act under (Title 21). HSI Special Agents use this authority to investigate all types of cross-border criminal activity and work in close coordination with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) and our state, local, tribal and international partners in a unified effort, to target the Transnational Criminal Organizations (TCOs) that are supplying illicit substances, to include opioids, to the United States.
Today, I would like to highlight our efforts to reduce the supply of illicit opioids, such as heroin, fentanyl, and fentanyl analogues from coming into the United States along the Southwest border in Arizona and the operational challenges we encounter.

President Donald Trump repeated his promise to make Mexico pay for the wall on the Southern Border, explaining that he would get the funding from renegotiating NAFTA.
“I don’t want to cause a problem, but in the end, Mexico is going to pay for the wall, I’m just telling you … they’re going to pay for the wall and they’re going to enjoy it, okay?” he said.
Trump slammed Mexico for doing nothing to stop the flow of illegal immigrants from South American countries traveling through their country, even though they enjoy a $100 billion annual trade deficit with the United States.

Alexander: The Trump Investigation-- Origins and Motives
Among the many resources we use to complement our analysis of news, policy and opinion is National Review, founded by William F. Buckley in 1955. NR has always been the intellectual standard for the conservative movement, though its editors sometimes get it wrong, as in the case of the candidacy of Donald Trump.
As with many “old guard” conservative publications, NR was befuddled both by Trump’s appeal and his ultimate election on November 8, 2016, and its editors still demonstrate some confusion about Trump’s populist support. That perplexity is rooted in the fact that many conservative intellectuals, most of whom reside inside the DC Beltway or in other equally high-brow protectorates like New York City, are disconnected from both the grassroots American Patriots who elected Donald Trump and those who didn’t initially support Trump but have since boarded the Trump Train to Make American Great Again.
Its grassroots disconnect notwithstanding, National Review still has, in my considered opinion, the best stable of political writers on the planet, far superior to those at The Atlantic, The New Republic and the rest of the Leftmedia propaganda machine.

That perplexity is rooted in the fact that many conservative intellectuals, most of whom reside inside the DC Beltway or in other equally high-brow protectorates like New York City, are disconnected from both the grassroots American Patriots who elected Donald Trump and those who didn’t initially support Trump but have since boarded the Trump Train to Make American Great Again.
Its grassroots disconnect notwithstanding, National Review still has, in my considered opinion, the best stable of political writers on the planet, far superior to those at The Atlantic, The New Republic and the rest of the Leftmedia propaganda machine.

Somali Immigrants Charged with Welfare Fraud in Maine
Two Somali immigrants have been charged with welfare fraud in Maine, reports say.
“The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maine said a federal grand jury indicted Abdirashid Ahmed, 38, of Lewiston and Garat Osman, 32, of Auburn for allegedly getting kickbacks of up to $200 per referral of people to a specific health care provider,” the Portland Press Herald reported this month:

Maryland to Conduct Damage Assessments with FEMA in Areas Impacted by Flooding
REISTERSTOWN, Md. (May 30, 2018) — MEMA and FEMA will conduct joint preliminary damage assessments with Howard County, Baltimore County, and Baltimore City beginning tomorrow, May 31, 2018, following the heavy rainfall, severe storms, and flooding that occurred this past weekend.
The joint preliminary damage assessments do not guarantee financial assistance, but, they are a key component of the recovery process.
“Our administration is committed to helping those impacted by the recent devastating floods recover as quickly as possible,” said Maryland Governor Larry Hogan. “I have directed the Maryland Emergency Management Agency to work closely with regional representatives from FEMA to seek all available assistance to support our public safety partners and our citizens who were affected as they work to rebuild.”
Federal assistance could potentially be made available through the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act.
Yesterday, Maryland announced that state agencies are actively supporting the Howard County Disaster Assistance Center to provide support to affected residents, especially those in and around Ellicott City. Additionally, beginning today, the Maryland Insurance Agency and the Maryland Department of Human Services are supporting an assistance open house being held by the City of Baltimore. Both the Howard County Disaster Assistance Center and Baltimore City’s Open House will help provide a one-stop resource center so affected residents and businesses can access local and state resources as they continue recovering from the floods. The Maryland Emergency Management Agency is coordinating state support.

Baltimore Has Been Named the Most Dangerous City in the U.S. for 2018
Every year, American's debate over which cities have the worse hoods. Is it Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta or Newark? in 2017, it was none of those cities. According to a report by USA Today, Baltimore is the most dangerous city in America.
The report shows that murder rates in America have dropped by about 2% in the nation's 50 largest cities. In 2017, there were 5,738 homicides in America's biggest cities, while in 2016 there were 5,863 homicides. The decrease is mostly attributed to cities like New York, Chicago, and Houston which dropped double-digit percentages, 13.4%, 14.7%, 11%, respectively.

The New York Times has admitted that it lied about the size of the crowd at the Trump rally held in Nashville on Tuesday night, and changed their crowd estimate after the president called them out on Twitter.
In their original story on the Trump rally, the Times claimed the crowd size was only 1,000–- a number that everyone in attendance Tuesday night knew was a misrepresentation of the much larger crowd at the Municipal Auditorium to listen to President Trump speak about his support for Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN-07) and her 2018 campaign for the U.S. Senate seat held by retiring Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN).

Grassley: Fusion GPS Founder Testimony Likely an ‘Outright Lie’
Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley released a letter on Tuesday accusing Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson of making “extremely misleading” statements” to Senate investigators.
Simpson told the Senate Judiciary Committee in August of 2017 that he stopped compiling opposition research on Donald Trump subsequent to 2016 presidential election. According to the Iowa lawmaker, the operative’s testimony appears to contradict statements that Daniel Jones, a Senate Intelligence Committee staffer and aide to Sen. Diana Feinstein (D-CA), gave to the FBI in March of 2017.
During the hearing, Simpson was asked, “So you didn’t do any work on the Trump matter after the election date; that was the end of your work?”
“I had no client after the election,” Simpson replied.
Grassley writes that Simpson’s statement was not only “extremely misleading” but possibly an “outright lie.”

According to the Iowa lawmaker, the operative’s testimony appears to contradict statements that Daniel Jones, a Senate Intelligence Committee staffer and aide to Sen. Diana Feinstein (D-CA), gave to the FBI in March of 2017.
During the hearing, Simpson was asked, “So you didn’t do any work on the Trump matter after the election date; that was the end of your work?”
“I had no client after the election,” Simpson replied.
Grassley writes that Simpson’s statement was not only “extremely misleading” but possibly an “outright lie.”

OCPD Arrests Two Men after Early Morning Crimes
Flowers refused to exit the hotel room or make contact with officers. The Ocean City Police Department Quick Response Team was activated and evacuated the fifth floor of the hotel as a precaution for the safety of the guests. Eventually, Flowers and another male in the room surrendered to police and were placed under arrest. The additional male was identified as Semere H. Habte, 31, of Dunn Loring, VA.
Simultaneous with this incident, officers discovered that Flowers and Habte were the suspects in the theft of a cell phone from another Denny’s location at 62nd Street earlier that morning.
Flowers was charged with first degree assault, second degree assault and possession of a deadly weapon with intent to injure. Habte was charged with theft of $100 to less than $1,500. Both Flowers and Habte were seen by a Maryland District Court Commissioner. Flowers was transferred to the Worcester County Jail and is being held without bond. Habte was released on $3,000 bond.

Law enforcement points to drill rappers' work as contributing, or even inciting, violence in London, but opinions are split on its root causes.

K-Trap's "David Blaine" opens with a similar prologue: All characters in this visual are entirely fictional. The events that occur are purley [sic] symbolic and should not be taken literal. The video follows up with an audio repetition of the warning.
The warnings are these rappers' insurance against claims by law enforcement in Britain that their genre of rap, called drill — the popularization of which is largely attributed to the rapper Chief Keef and which was seized on by British youth, driving an explosion in that country — has been a contributing factor in a metastasizing,upward trend of violence there.
"Sadly, I have had to look at quite a lot of drill music," Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick, London's highest-ranking police official, said in an interview on May 18. "You can access it, sadly, very easily ... Very quickly you will see that these are associated with lyrics that are about glamorizing violence — serious violence, murder, stabbings, they describe the stabbings in great detail, with great joy ... But most particularly, it is often — we have gangs who make drill videos and in those videos they taunt each other and say what they're going to do with each other." A "gangs database" established by the Metropolitan Police, which lists among other things the music taste of those in it, was called "deeply flawed" by Amnesty International last month.
