Expanding Sales Tax Not Right Call In Maryland

How to fund the Kirwan Commission’s recommendations to improve Maryland public school question continues to be the biggest issue in Annapolis for the General Assembly.

A proposal to create new revenue by expanding the state’s sales tax was unveiled this week to raise the new revenue needed. We don’t believe the foolish plan deserves any attention at all, but over the coming weeks it will get a thorough review because it’s supported by many Democratic leaders.

Maryland has an expense problem. Many people believe it’s too expensive to live and do business in Maryland currently, while many lawmakers maintain that’s perception and not reality. There are a bevy of financial comparisons proving the case living and doing business in Maryland is more expensive than neighboring states. There are numerous examples of people opting to move to nearby states a short drive away to save on property and income taxes, and businesses deciding to relocate due to expenses being too high in this state. We believe there is merit to these concerns.

The Democrats will be taxing the poor. Dumb move, but they don't use their brains well anyhow.

when they wanted casinos in the state they said some of that revenue will go towards schools. Someone needs to take a good hard look to find other revenue instead of taxing the taxpayers.

Just get rid of the dead beats sucking off the public tit especially the illegal aliens.Kick the trouble makers that don't want to learn out of school and emphasis the trade programs such as auto repair, plumbing, heating, electrical installation and repair and a lot of other service jobs. When the kids graduate they will have a trade and experience. It ain't rocket science you don't algebra to fix a toilet.

Remember, It is all for the kids!!!! As the kids get more dumb and dumber each and every year, where they don't learn a damn thing extra but what schools to start earlier and earlier... Which now should show you what I said from day one, it is all about the money not the kids, you people are just morons who fall for the same mantra of the phrase its for the kids!!!

Like it is a trigger word, you go all brain dead, when you hear its for the kids, and then your true slave comes out, yes masta may I have some more!!!1

I buy as much as possible in Delaware. Including gas, non food, beer etc.

That's how they sold casinos in Maryland, all the revenue would go to schools, and no tax homes would be needed. Surprise, evidently they lied.

Hogan stated no new taxes and no new taxes for the Kirwan plan. Proof of Hogan's lies. Just like his lies on gun control and right to carry regulations. When will the Republicans in MD get serious and get viable candidates for those us who can't afford to move out of this high taxed socialist State?

Wasn't the money from the lottery going to solve all the money problems for the educational system?n That's was supposed to be what that money was for, then the money from casinos was for education, now they want to raise taxes for lit. Any excuse they can come up with. Maryland is getting to be a state that is just too expensive to live in.m People are leaving and businesses are leaving.

Because of Maryland's balanced budget law, our legislators have no option other than to raise taxes to fund increased spending. Amazing how many people think the federal government should have a balanced budget amendment, and think that would be a good thing. It's not. It just mandates that politicians fund their pet projects with tax increases. It does nothing to curb politicians endless spending, or to cap a budget at a proposed level of spending.

My son has left for better opportunities down south.
He told me that almost half of the people in his church are from Maryland!

I'm five years away from retirement and I have been doing improvements to my home to get it ready for sale. I plan to put it up for sale within five years and then get out of this state for lower taxes and a warmer climate in either North or South Carolina.

My wife and I still need to care for our parents, but when they are gone, there won't be anything or any reason for me to stay here.

Delmar Delaware is also full of dumb dumbs.
They should be saturated with retail of any and all sorts.

Driving to Delmar to escape sales tax, absolutely.

Well by God keep voting for tax and spend Democrats. People of Md. think the ONLY lawmakers possible is a Democrat so when they boar-hog the voter, take it with a smile.
The problem with Md. isn't with the elective's, its with the voters. You go to the polls and give them free reign then bitch when things go amok. Apparently you don't watch TV friends. ANYTHING the Dumbocrats get their hands on turns into the same fiasco as the Dem debate Wednesday.

How long is it going to take for you to absorb this constant.?????????????

MD DumbocRATS cannot read and understand MD's balanced budget mandate. They just want to spend and tax or steal from the Maryland State Employee Retirement Fund. Unions say they are for the workers but push for these DumbocRATS to be elected then say nothing about them stealing from MD State Employees Retirement Fund without repayment with interest. The State Employees are mandated to contribute a percentage every pay.
