Md. bill would provide access to ballots for eligible voters behind bars

As the primary elections fast approach, a group in Maryland is working to get a bill passed that would help eligible voters behind bars cast their ballots.

Qiana Johnson, executive director of Suitland, Maryland-based Life After Release, was in jail during the last presidential election and said she could vote but did not have the access.

“I definitely would have engaged in that process and there are a lot of people who would engage in that process,” Johnson said.

Her non-profit is one of the organizations, along with the American Civil Liberties Union, that is working to improve access to ballots.

They forfeited these rights when they committed their crimes! This is only designed to buy dumbocratic votes!

We should fight this with everything that is right and just!

I guess someone incarcerated but not yet tried and convicted could still be eligible to vote. Also guessing they could have a friend or family member get the paperwork to apply for absentee ballot.

AMEN! I don't want these criminals influencing elections and making laws for me!

And a law should be passed that making it so that criminals not be allowed to hold public office!

Do these convicts have to pay taxes when they are released from jail? Then they should be able to vote. I suppose you could say while they are incarcerated no help in letting them should be there but they should not lose their Constitutional Rights under any circumstances once they are free.

And does this benefit both parties equally? Of course not. The Democrats in Maryland keep trying to stuff the ballot box to their favor, when they already have an overwhelming majority in the state. Maryland Democrats are as corrupt as they get, from Gerrymandering to stuffing the ballot box with unqualified, illegal, and dead people votes. The eastern Shore is a nice place to live, but our state government is one of the worst in the country.

You are right 10:39, This proposal does not benefit both parties. Everyone with any sense at all knows Maryland jails are attended by 75 to 85 percent blacks whom 99 percent "if" registered, are democrats.
