A Viewer Writes.......13 Storey High Rise In Salisbury (7-21-19)

What do you think of the 13 story High Rise going up in downtown Salisbury?

Aside that it will affect our skyline, what should they do with this building?  Are you afraid it will eventually turn into low income housing?  I am!!!

Jake Day claims it will be filled with college students.

Why would you ever believe Jake Day

Whatever happened to Cactus Taverna moving across from Brew River? Is this project dead?

Anonymous said...

If it's in the city limits, it will become a $#!Th0le eventually. If it's by the water, it'll be an expensive overpriced $#!th0le!

I can assure you an application has already been made for Section 8 status. Same way the "Arts Center" on Fitzwater Street was handled

Anonymous said...

There are already maxed out with college apartments--more on the way south of SU on Rt 13. This will end up being fiasco--low rent Section 8. Jake's an idiot

Anonymous said...

And why would you want more college students downtown tearing shit up and even worse, parking... They already charge a crap ton to park in the garage and at metered spots... We pay to park in the parking lot and we can't even do it because the city won't let us so they can put their dumb ass inspectors trucks there... Then all of the low level income people hitting my car left and right so they can skip out on not having to pay at a free 2 hours parking lot... And of course NO CAMERAS to catch the people who hit your car... yet they always seem to have cameras every where to catch you doing wrong... Not to mention more dumb ass kids to pee on the walls of building and leave or throw trash on the sidewalks... That our tax money pays for the city to remove but they will fine you for them not doing their job... Like snow removal... The city is supposed to do that, our tax money pays for it, now some how they can fine you if you don't remove snow for them from your office building...

If Brother Jake said it, then you can bet your paycheck that it is a lie.

They can't choose students over anyone else. Yes, Salisbury landlords have done it for years, but only by skirting housing laws, mainly by frightening others away with sky high rent quotes.
Only juniors, seniors and grad students could live there, as freshmen and sophomores are required to live on campus.
Where do they expect to put the hundred or more cars 24/7?

AComeHere said...

I'm more concerned about what else they'll want. They need several new fire engines, more fire fighters, more inspectors, etc. Fortunately I don't live in Salisbury.

Anonymous said...

How will it "affect" our skyline? Some people think a high rise skyline is beautiful! Stop complaining about any sort of development and growth downtown. This is good news and will help the economy.

Anonymous said...

Who got the contract for this construction scam gilliss or veteran builder??

Anonymous said...

Oh sure, just like the "artist" studio condos on Fitzwater street.

Anonymous said...

What is up with the Cactus Taverna building downtown--another unveiling by Jake Day that doesn't happen--he's the King of BS out of his mouth--Evo was supposed to have an expansion as well--they can't even pave their parking lot..

Salisbury "skyline"! Lol you mean an old hotel and hospital. Real cosmopolitan

Anonymous said...

Is this even real? I had issues filling my house with renters for the first time in ten years (not a slum lord, i just cant sell the POS). Unless SU is planning on adding 5,000 more students soon; I don't think this is even feasible with the new building going up near campus.

Anonymous said...

13 Stories??? not good

Anonymous said...

Works perfect in the plans to be a sanctuary city. Have to put all those illegals somewhere.

Anonymous said...

There ar so many new rental housing developments in the area but why? Certainly they all can be totally rented. The newer units will get people to move from the current rentals, but what will become of the older apartments?

landlords will have to reduce prices to get residents and then those will become slums and the neighborhoods will die. Our council representatives are not thinking ahead because they see tax revenue

Anonymous said...

I'd rather see a good hotel go there.

Anonymous said...

I can see it now old people getting robbed in the lobby

Piss in the elevators.

Jumping off the building

Loitering for drugs

SPD too scared to respond to crime

Shootings

Stabbings

ECT ECT ECT.

Evo is a joke!! They got 5,000 get out of jail free card from Day on back taxes I believe and they still scrape by

Anonymous said...

Sounds like a really, really, really bad idea. The surrounding infrastructure just won't support that level of congestion, and that's presupposing that it ever gets built.

How long were the half constructed luxury condos perched at the river's edge?

Students prefer the vibe of the actual campus not being in a high rise ghetto a couple of miles away.

Did Joke even attend classes to get his degree?

To the writer of the post it's too late to worry about Salisbury is flooded with section 8 or as the ones raping you voucher program housing. It's literally from Delmar all the way to fruitland and you keep supporting Day. The slumlords are just waiting to scoop up all the once family homes for pennies on the dollar to rent

10:40 more inspectors the ones we have do nothing but ride through the city streets like Washington, Jackson & Vine they don't see abandoned buildings like 308 Washington starting tearing down and reconstruction a year ago May they stopped and never came back! Houses on foreclosed property lists now given back to the home owners that abandoned them, cars 3 x more than the properties should have according to zoning, parking lots at houses side yards, front yards and backyards. Untagged vehicles everywhere, grass gets cut once a season. Weeds in side yards and backyards 3 ft tall. Gutters on houses with weeds becoming small trees. Great job coding and compliance since Susan Phillips not in charge can't wait for the impression you will make on people coming to the FESTIVAL, or considering moving here GHETTO CITY THANKS TO OUR CHILD MAYOR AND HIS CRONIES. FIRE THE MAYOR, CITY COUNCIL. Also what happened to Jake's paying the pan handlers with jobs ----guess what there back out on Rt 13 North & South another failure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What happened to "Historic Downtown Salisbury?"

Jake Day has ruined our historic downtown with his progressive ideas. Berlin, Easton, St. Michaels and others are much better cities than Salisbury will ever be now.

College students? You mean low income rentals.

Who gives a Flying Fck!! Do you realize these Libtards pushing for this extra money for the firemen is a scam??

Guess what? Every fireman and police officer working in NYC on 9/11 have health insurance, disability, retirement and other benefits!!!! Why the HELL do the hard working taxpayers have to pay more money to these people?? What they did comes with the job and nothing more. Get a life, LIBTARD!! Paid firemen thinking they deserver more money and hero status. Find another job!!

Jake Day is delusional to think that people are just dying to move to Ghetto'Bury! There are already hundreds of low-income housing apartments going up on Beaglin Park Drive and Merritt Mill Road and now this ghetto skyscraper??

Someone please red flag that boi so that he can't buy a gun. Oh Wait!! I heard Jake Day has a concealed carry permit and always packs a pistol. If Salisbury is so safe then why does Jakey Boi have to carry a concealed weapon?

Mr. Albero can you expand on that CCW that Jake Day carries?? I don't feel safe around him.

I find it interesting how all the mayors go on and on about increasing home ownership but continue to backdoor saturating the town with apt complexes.

Anonymous said...

It's a toss up whether section 8 housing or college students are worse for the city. Neither bring much to the city except for the fast food joints. This is one of the most hideous ideas the city has had. How about some affordable housing for working people, not just for freeloaders and kids that daddy is footing the bill for to keep them out of his house. The working class can't afford a decent place to live while the freeloading section 8ers are living in all these nice new, modern apartments at the expense of the working stiffs who can't afford as well for themselves and their families. It's just not right.

Anonymous said...

In the interview of Austin Whitehead for the County Council Position, he mentioned all the rentals and how there needs to be incentive for home ownership vs all the rentals. He was absolutely right. People take pride in what they work hard to own. Most people that rent don't give a darn about those homes because they are not theirs, they are renting and careless of the upkeep. Think he stepped on some toes on the council? Think maybe this is why they don't want him on the council?

A couple issues that no one has asked. How is this being done with a historic building in a historic district. Other building owners have to get approval to even hang a sign, certainly adding all these floors is not within the Historic District concept. Where are all of these additional "students" going to park? Two years ago the Parking Garage was at capacity, and the only way to reduce this is to do away with the daily transient parkers to issue more permits. The parking lots 10 & 1 have been sold so where are they going to park. When the lot is developed where are all of the Library patrons going to park? Where are all of the District Court people going to park for court. Its great to bring in business and an influx of blood into downtown, but the infrastructure is not there.

Anonymous said...

4:57 so tell us how many people that live in the bury that felt the affects of what happened on 9/11 from day 1 with cancer? This is not NY where it all happened. There are not that many people here if any that were in any of those buildings. Nice try though. Just like "it's for the children" "Education" All a bunch of crap to doop more people out of their hard earned tax dollars.

Anonymous said...

Chicago used to have public housing high rise buildings. (Cabrini Green and Robert Taylor homes). It was a perfect high vantage point for the gang bangers to set up sniper posts and shoot at any cop that dared to go near.
The cops refused to go near the buildings.
Eventually they were all torn down at a cost to the taxpayers.

Learn history or be doomed to repeat it.

If this is the one going on top of the old Wicomico Hotel building, it will be a major hazard. That foundation / footers were not put in to handle this added weight / pressure. Who was the inspectors that approved this death trap? Who are the architects that approved this and what guarantee are they giving for it's safety? Did the State of Maryland architects approve it? Who reviewed the original plans / specs for the Wicomico Hotel when it was built to guarantee the safety today for this expansion? Will these old building specs meet todays requirements? There are a bunch of idiots putting peoples lives in danger and their own wealth since they will be totally responsible in the lawsuits.

What do people pay for rent in a "low-income" apartment? It seems like they should be living in the older, smaller apartments where less should be charged and the newer, larger, more modern apartments go to people with jobs and real disposable income.

It seems that all these young progressive liberals with grandiose ideas think that they can just fake it til they make it. Stupid signs all over the place "It's happening". No it's not and just saying it a hundred times won't make it happen. Chasing away good businesses and replacing them with professional government handout takers certainly won't make it happen. Spending 90k dollars of OTHER PEOPLES MONEY to put a vinyl wrap on a parking garage isn't going to make it happen either. Shutting down Main Street for YEARS to pave a QUARTER MILE of road isn't going to do it. Boy mayor is definitely a fitting name. I've been around this jack@$$ and his friends and they are absolutely clueless but think they are smarter than EVERYONE else.

Don't we have enough vacant properties sitting around Salisbury Day? Wayne King said...

Ok......... I heard enough! The people have spoken. Jake Day does not listen to the people or will he ever. This is mayoral Candidate Wayne King. I STARTED THIS THREAD, BECAUSE I WANT TO HEAR WHAT THE PEOPLE THINK. THAT IS WHY I AM RUNNING FOR MAYOR.TO DO WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT.
Elect me and I will fix this. I will try to figure out how this was approved. There isn't enough parking, and to Jake's dismay, this is not a biking community!!! I will try to block the construction of this high rise, but it may be too late. I would also be dealing with a liberal council. (Boda, Heath, and Jester are running again for council. We need some conservatives to step up and run.) I do have plans for the building if we get stuck with it.
An excerpt from my website:
13 STORY HIGH-RISE
First thing I would do is pass a law stating that this building can never be used for low income housing. I do not believe many or any college students will ever rent these apartments. I know, I asked many of them. BUT, I do have a solution that is much better than housing. Business Development will start cold calling companies looking for a "new home". For Instance, businesses like a Digital Media Group, or a call center; companies that do business without leaving their office and could rent a whole floor. Their employees can rent apartments right inside the same building where they work. If the business owners sign a lease before the building is done we could customize the offices to their liking. We can also advertise in business publications. This will be part of the revitalization of the downtown. This is all contingent on what the owner of the building is willing to do.
RE-VITALIZING DOWNTOWN
We need to let the downtown grow organically instead of trying to force it with money. Bringing businesses to the high-rise would be a good start. We will continue to set the stage for the future by fixing or upgrading the infrastructure; it makes sense because sooner or later it will need to be done and its not getting any cheaper. Any project we do downtown will be small unless it is infrastructure. Once again, Business Development will be looking for companies looking for a "new home". We need to be proactive. Tax breaks for new businesses.
EVERYONE, WE HAVE A CHOICE. GET OUT AND VOTE KING!

How can we make sure a business that comes to this sky rise will stay longer than 6 months? One great example is Seagull square. It's a huge building with most of the bottom floor vacant and now they are planning to build even more of a similar style building.

Wayne King said...

9:08
Businesses will stay if they can do business within the confines of the building. That's why a business such as a call center would be perfect. (The world has gotten much smaller with the advent of technology.) If the businesses depend on the local economy they will be fiscally at risk. In retrospect, these businesses will fuel the local economy. More jobs, more tax revenue, and people who work there will be able to shop in the downtown; once prospective business owners see the added prospective customers with money in their pockets, shops and stores will open.
For example, if a company like Amazon moved here, the people that work there don't have to reach out to just the locals, but the world. And those employees will need housing and places to shop. Now, I am not saying Amazon is coming, but companies that do business like them will. This is how the downtown will grow organically, and it will cost the tax payers nothing!

Regards,
Wayne King

Years ago they used to have a call center in Salisbury. It's last location was in winterplace. I don't think it's still there. I know a lot of people worked there. Now you have to press one for English and you still can't understand them!

Anonymous said...

With all the new apartment buildings around or being built where are the new schools? Students aren't the only ones that are renting these places. Families are also. They keep building developments like the one going on the old mall property. Where are the schools to teach our children? The ones we have now are already over crowded. Something to think about!

Anonymous said...

11:02
Even when they build schools they don't build them big enough. They start with the number of students....and by the time the school gets approved...funded and built they have already outgrown it. This happens all over the place. They never seem to account for population grow a few years down the road.

What we really need is a Mayor who will not go along with the so called good ol' boys here in Salisbury. A Mayor who will look into crooked goings on and report to the people what he or she has found. I'm sure you will find some evidence of crooked dealings. One way is to talk to the employees of the City of Salisbury. Especially maintenance and the goings on at Canal Woods. Promise them their name will be kept out of the public's eye to protect them. Honesty is needed desperately here in Salisbury. Let's blow this wide open.
