Lyme Disease Meeting Monday, August 26, 2019

Happy late Summer to everyone! At our August meeting this coming Monday, we will be viewing a video combination from the 2017 Annual Scientific Conference hosted by the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society that includes two half-hour presentations as follows:
Part 1: Overview & Basic Science of Botanical Medicine in the Treatment of Tick-borne Infections presented by Mischa Grieda, ND

Part 2: Clinical Application of Key Botanical Medicines in the Treatment of Tick-borne Infections presented by Jacob Leone, ND

Part 1 discusses the recommended treatment objectives of 1) infection management; 2) immune modulation; and 3) functional repair. Dr. Grieda presents the conventional vs. botanical approaches to each of these objectives in the treatment of tick-borne diseases. He emphasizes that treatment of tick-borne diseases is not all about killing the bugs and he provides a basic understanding for the importance of including immune modulation and functional cell repair in the treatment plan.

He also introduces three main herbs that he and Dr. Leone chose to highlight in their talks - artemisia, curcumin and andrographis. Many other herbs are also discussed in the talks, but the two speakers spend a lot of their time on these three that they consider important in the treatment of tick-borne diseases. And they tie the three herbs into the treatment objectives mentioned above, as well as to the treatment of several individual tick-borne diseases.

In Part 2, Dr. Leone gets more heavily involved in the clinical use of herbs in the treatment of tick-borne diseases by addressing key considerations - such as inflammation, pain, autoimmune disorders, gastrointestinal issues, neurological problems - in the context of actual case studies.

Both speakers provide a brief history of herbal medicines and their use in the development of certain pharmaceutical drugs, and they provide clinical studies referencing the increased effectiveness of antibiotics when used with certain herbal medicines. Herbal safety and selection of quality herbs are also mentioned. Each presentation is a half hour in length.
