Racetrack Owner: No Deal To Keep Preakness In Baltimore

BALTIMORE -- The company that owns Pimlico Race Course is disputing Mayor Catherine Pugh's claim that she had worked out a plan with them to keep the Preakness Stakes at the Baltimore track.

Pugh told members of the Legislative Black Caucus on Thursday that her team had met with officials from The Stronach Group and thought they had worked out a way to maintain the signature race at Pimlico. She said Stronach "walked away from negotiations."

When pressed by reporters afterward, Pugh declined to offer any details.

"We actually had a group go down and meet with the Stronachs a few weeks ago and we thought we had a deal and we get back and there's no deal," Pugh told reporters.

The Stronach Group said there was never a deal.

"The Stronach Group has in fact met with Mayor Pugh and City officials on multiple occasions -- including a meeting in the Mayor's office on January 22 -- but at no point in time was a proposal presented or discussed that had any feasible financial plans for the City, State or for the thoroughbred racing industry," the company said in a statement to The Baltimore Sun.

That is great Baltimore does not deserve the Preakness. Maryland does not even deserve the Preakness. The owners need to move from the "SLUMS".

232, the drunk fests of the pasts have been replaced with no coolers/alcohol brought into the infield and having to buy bracelets for alcohol. Going back to the O'Pally days.

21st Century, no one has $400 million to fix a barn like facility that still won't be utilized in an awful part of town. Destroy Pimlico, sell the land, build and utilize Laurel which is outside the City, along the I95/BW parkway, tap into the Washington DC area population and use the train to get in/out. Time is well past, plus Stronach has already dumped 10's of millions to upgrade Laurel AND will continue to do so. They are in control, not the Baltimore idiot Mayor. She has enough problems than horse racing that she doesn't understand!

In other words, The Stronach Group refused to give Pugh her "usual payoff"...

They need to buy some of the mayors books. By the way the police post around Pimlico is host to the highest crime rate in the city.

The infield problems St the Preakness are just a reflection of your state but mostly the university Maryland college lifestyle. Why would Maryland expect the stronach group to even keep the race in Maryland after the way they represented the event??
