Sen. Lindsey Graham said that he almost fell out of his chair in disbelief when Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, testified Wednesday that she wasn’t aware that the Judiciary Committee had offered to visit her in California to hear her story.
At a committee hearing on Thursday, Sen. Graham quoted the email offer sent to Ford’s attorneys on September 19, 2018:
“The email interactions between this committee and her lawyers: ‘My staff would still welcome the opportunity to speak with Dr. Ford at any time, at any place convenient to her. Come to us, or we to you. I’m willing to have my staff travel to California, or anywhere else, to obtain her testimony.’ September the nineteenth.
The committee repeated the offer in a letter to Ford’s attorneys, which has been publicly posted on its Senate website since September 19th.
Sen. Graham, noting his years of experience as a lawyer, called for an investigation into how, and why, this offer was not clearly explained to Ford by her attorneys:
“I don’t know what to believe, but I tend to believe that Dr. Ford did not know about this invitation. Now, I’ve been a lawyer most of my adult life, and somebody needs to ask the question to her lawyers: How could she not know about this?
“Are you beginning to understand what’s been going on for a very long time in this case?
“It’s not that hard to figure out.”
