June Smoking Citations Up 1,000% In Ocean City

OCEAN CITY – Law enforcement officials in Ocean City are reporting a substantial increase in citations for smoking on the beach and Boardwalk, highlighting the police department’s efforts to enforce the town’s smoking ordinance.

In 2015, Ocean City passed an ordinance that banned smoking on the beach and Boardwalk, except within 15 feet of a designated smoking area. Last month, however, the Mayor and Council voted to amend the ordinance to include marijuana and vaping and subsequently requested the Ocean City Police Commission review enforcement efforts for the smoking ban.

To that end, Ocean City Police Chief Ross Buzzuro on Monday presented the commission with a report on the number of citations issued for smoking, skateboarding and animal violations along the Boardwalk during the month of June.

Just another "fee" for visiting the boardwalk. Funny how they don't reveal just how many of these ridiculous tickets were actually PAID.

It is a "stupid fee". If you get cited, you are stupid for not following the law/rules and stupid for smoking.

Oh yeah, this will bring the tourists back! What about the crime, the homeless, the nightly thug takeover...??? Nope, can't worry about the little stuff, but we are nailing those smokers!

9:58 AM Moron. The signs are intentionally small and barely discernible amongst all the other signage and garbage on the boardwalk.

I bet 99% never saw a sign. And try and find a designated smoking area. Those are intentionally also not well indicated and purposefully hidden.

Although it is wonderful not having to clean up the thousands of discarded butts. Its a money grab and you are a bit lightheaded if you think it is anything other than that.

If people weren't such slobs and the city actually had receptacles in place this never would have happened

People are so worried about second hand smoke but will sit for hours in traffic trying to get to the beach. Maybe they will spend that money on the roads so they don't flood every time it rains a few inches.

So many rules just to go on vacation. NC/SC have nothing like this and less expensive than MD's Family Friendly OC MD.

Still waiting to discuss the video of the gang fight earlier this week at H20.

Well???

I wonder how long it will take for OC to acknowledge that their anti-tourist policies (smoking, boardwalk, parking)are driving the tourists away?

Another government plot to discourage tourism and businesses making money.
