Behind Bars, Mentally Ill Inmates Are Often Punished For Their Symptoms

By some accounts, nearly half of America's incarcerated population is mentally ill — and journalist Alisa Roth argues that most aren't getting the treatment they need.

Roth has visited jails in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Atlanta and a rural women's prison in Oklahoma to assess the condition of mentally ill prisoners. She says correctional officers are on the "front lines" of mental health treatment — despite the fact that they lack clinical training.

"Most of [the correctional officers] will talk about how this is not what they signed up," Roth says. "Most of them have not had much training in dealing with mental illness — or they've had none at all."

Or they become Democrats

I don't want them to be free and a threat to society.I think that number is way high, but a good 25% have some degree of mental illness.Until someone finds an alternative to that gray area prison it must be to keep us safe.

Ask any correctional officer how many inmates are kept in single occupancy cells because they're mentally ill.
Ask any correctional officer how mental illness is treated at places like ECI. Their answer will be pills and isolation.

Is there a survey how many are democrats vs republicans incarcerated?

8:59 yes, but it was deemed "Racist' because it proved that Democrats cause more crime, and are incarcerated more than republicans.
The FBI stats show the US incarceration rate is as follows.

Blacks-79%
Latino -4%
Asian- 1%
White - 16%
