Wicomico Sheriff Seeks More Deputies

SALISBURY – Officials with the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office made their requests for additional deputies, vehicles and more at a budget work session this week.

On Tuesday, representatives with the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office came before the Wicomico County Council to make their case for additional funding in fiscal year 2019.

The proposed $151 million budget includes nearly $13 million – $7.9 million in salaries, more than $769,000 in operating expenses, $4,000 in one-time operating expenses and $412,800 in capital expenses – for the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

Capt. Todd Richardson told the council the sheriff’s department was seeking a three-percent increase in its operating budget for the coming fiscal year to cover the costs of building maintenance and state-mandated bullet-proof vests. The department has also requested funding for four new deputy positions and eight new vehicles.

They have been getting new vehicles for the past few years.

Going to go up more when they start putting 2-3 SRO at each school.

No Harley's?

So the municipalities in Wicomico County get to pay for 2 police forces.
That seems fair

That’s not going to happen because most of the sro are color and they don’t have enough of them on the force...the remaining officers work on the road.

Maryland should allow its citizens to carry firearms. The crime rate would drop due to a shrinking criminal population. Then we could cut the police budget.

Fair request, I would suggest equip the new cars for full duty patrol cars and rotate the higher mileage cars to the School Resource Officers and these need to be equipped, don't handcuff the SRO's in the event something does happen at a school filled with children! The appearance and upkeep of these vehicles should be taken care (paint, if needed, equipment repairs, etc.) prior to moving to an SRO, these officers deserve the necessary equipment to perform their assignments whether at school assignment or on a different assignment! DON'T CUT COST ON SECURITY!

More revenue collectors.

You would never know there even were WC Officers unless you were in Salisbury town limits.

Mike should drive his personal car to work.

I seen cars parked for weeks at some officers homes. Drive by them 3-4 times a day and car in same spot.

While the sheriff's Dept does a good job you can't go down a road and not see a police car of some kind this area is saturated with police and still lots of crime.

If crime is down in Salisbury, as Mayor Day claims, then why do they need more police officers?

4:10 this article is about the County Sheriffs Department making the request not the City of Salisbury.

2:01 you are delusion to think you have any kind of security anywhere, when most cops are cowards and corrupt... Go video record a cop on a traffic stop, go video record the police station or court house and see what happens... And Remember, while you are being handcuffed, all video of public places is perfectly legal to do under LAW, you know the think you always say follow...

4:10 for more revenue generation!!! Plain and simple...

Because they keep leaving to get better jobs and away from Limelight Lewis.

Time to combine the Salisbury Police and sheriff department and have it all covered. Everywhere else has county police!

I like Mike and he’s a family friend that being said he needs to start spending all the money he gets from drug busts they got plenty of money they don’t need anymore Trust and believe we don’t know the half of what they confiscate

Tod is Mikes beggar captain. This budget is a bottomless pit.But I will say the more trash that moves in and around DABURY the more sworn sanitary you need to throw it away but the trash tide is far to big for the clean up guys anymore. Why not some of the new sheriffs on bicycles downtown to patrol for feral animals roaming and robbing down there.

People are already "allowed" to carry firearms. Maybe for those, that mistakenly think they have to ask "permission" to carry is who you are referring.

What ? Have they run out of brothers and cousins and in laws ?

He needs more bodies to fill that big office they are building. That agency is so top heavy it is a joke how many supervisors they have doing nothing. No one working the road because they are all on day work kissing Mike's ass. Just like the Harley cops what exactly do they do other than ride in parades with Mike. Dynasty building I am sure he will want new building named after him. He is a joke.

Why doesn’t Mikey hire the good officers that Duncan’t runs out of Spd, oh that’s right because he’s in her back pocket.

It’s time for the Bd of Ed to develop their own special PD. Our universities have them. Our hospitals have them. Why is it taking so long for our school systems across the country to have them. Be proactive Wicomico! Form your own special police and let the Sheriff’s Office focus on law enforcement, not security.

I'm not a cop but even I know that "most cops" are NOT cowards or corrupt. You state, correctly, that videoing police and other things are legal then suggest one would get arrested for doing so. I think maybe you are watching too many youtube "instructionals". lol.

Or maybe you are stuck in the past when people were being arrested for videoing when the law was not clear to most people and some cops. I don't know and I probably don't care.

It does sound like you have a low opinion of police for whatever reason. I can imagine a couple of reasons but won't mention them.

Heck, I highly doubt you would have the gumption to video anything or confront one of those "coward" cops. I wouldn't suggest doing so.

I hope your life gets better and you find happiness. Maybe that dark cloud over your head will disappear one day.

Do you realize just how much work the Sherriffs office does on the city limits?

Get the Parkside High automotive classes to do routine maintenance on the SRO vehicles.

3 you pay state taxes don't you?

Anonymous said...

Its still the peoples tax money funding it! The core structure of the force already exists. We do not need to fund duplicative administration!

Anonymous said...

Every year they need more money.

This little bit of taxes for safety is nothing compared to what the democrats are going to impose on us to bail out the state pension fund,we are going to need hospitalization for that reaming!

That was their choice, not the counties. If you have a bitch then you need to bitch with Salisbury, Fruitland and Delmar.

Did you notice you math was off just a little?

Mike Lewis stated he wanted new cars for the School Resource Officers to look good parked in front of the schools to give the sheriff's department a good image.

Sounds like good reason to give Mike Lewis new cars at the taxpayers' expense. NOT!!

If it is owed to the employees then it needs to be paid. Guess what I am a conservative, but I believe in treating the employees the best that they can be treated and give them what you told you that they would receive.

I have said it for years and I'll say it again and probably until I die, Combine the city and county forces and let it be one. Other cities and counties do this and works marvelously but here, No, can't do that. WHY???

Do you respect MSP Jordan Monk for following a female around town for weeks after he stopped her? He had the hots for her I heard. Put on restricted duty but will this stop him from winning clerk of court? There’s safety at its finest. Good ole boys club...transparency.
