Kate Spade’s Death Ignites Concern About Rising Suicide Rate

Fashion designer Kate Spade’s death Tuesday has reminded Americans of the enormous toll of suicide, a growing problem that claims nearly 45,000 lives a year.

Suicide rates in the U.S. have risen nearly 30 percent since 1999, according to a report released Thursday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Suicides increased in both men and women, in all ethnic groups and in both urban and rural areas. Suicide and “self-harm,” a category that includes attempted suicides, cost the nation $70 billion a year in medical care and lost work time.

Nearly half of people who died by suicide had a known mental health condition, according to the CDC. Family members have given different accounts of Spade’s struggle. In media interviews, her sister, Reta Saffo, has said that she believes the designer suffered from bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression. The designer’s husband said in a statement that she “suffered from depression and anxiety for many years” and “was actively seeking help.”

There are specialists TRAINED to make murders look like suicide. They even use an app to study handwriting samples & duplicate via a handwritten "suicide letter".Not even the most experienced investigators can distinguish the difference.Sad that such a thing has become a black market specialty.I become suspicious when the victim had everything to live for.

If they are so concerned..stop big pharma drug pushing to our kids and adults. Re-Open the insane asylums and reform schools again. It the side effects of these drugs that are the problem not guns. Big pharma!! They CURE NOTHING, but only create violent suicidal maniacs. Some turn to self inflict others look to harm others before they do themselves. Feds need to Legalize weed and allot of this would stop....but there is no dollars if you can your own meds.

Without judging the right or wrong of it, I can't help but be amazed at all the do-ggoders who think they need to intervene into the affairs of others because THEY don't think it's right, or THEY have moral problem with it, or THEIR religion says it a sin.
Not just suicide but ALL the actions and activities THEY don't, won't or can't do. Or approve of....
It's THEIR life, NOT YOURS.
What is more of a personal possession than one's own life? YET, there are still people who think THAT also falls under their control and domain??
They will answer to God. Not YOU.

No one knows what is in someone's mind. If someone is that miserable with their life and want to end it, who are we to judge and make them live in pain(mental or physical)? If you try to tell someone suicidal that it's just temporary and things will get better, you can't guarantee that. Yes, it's terrible for the ones left behind, but there is no need to make someone suffer needlessly just because your brain works differently than theirs and you can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
