ansas city bills parents $132,000 after child damages glass sculpture

A city in Kansas is reportedly demanding $132,000 from the parents of a 5-year-old boy who knocked over a glass sculpture.

The piece of art, “Aphrodite di Kansas City,” was on display at an Overland Park community center when the boy damaged it on May 19, the Kansas City Star reported. He was attending a wedding reception with his parents at the time.

“He probably hugged it,” the boy’s mother Sarah Goodman told the paper. “Maybe my son hugged a torso because he’s a loving, sweet nice boy who just graduated from preschool.”

Parents, watch your children!
It's that simple.

unfortunate but the parents are responsible for their child

It was reported that the parent said they kids were well watched but from what I saw she was nowhere in sight. She came across as a total idiot on the news.

Kids you love to hate.
Kind of like the guy who drives 55 in the passing lane. Never learns to behave well in public.

Well first off, there would be video to show the kid hugging the statue if that were the case, but who gives a crap, the point is as most posted, you don't just let you kid run around and touch on everything... It is that simple... I find it funny how even the mother of a criminal who got shot breaking into a house, claim her child is a good child and didn't deserve to be shot as he broke into a house that wasn't his... And like the ass cheek sucking cop lovers say about cops, this mother claims her kid is good and it was probably the statues fault!!!!

Item was clipped down and not securely. Parents should counter sue about potential hazard. Also, 135k item sitting out for any one to to do whatever to? Kind of flimsy. Should have much more secure in every sense of any scenario. They, the community center, messed up and are trying to pass the buck.

Sorry there is a sign on their door that states that all children under 10 MUST be supervised by an adult. The piece was on loan temporarily. Even though the mother states she was "just around the corner" the camera view shows down the hall where the kids came from and returned and she is no where in sight.

It's about time a parent is held accountable for their child's behavior.

I've had lots of kids damage items in my store, had them climbing up on shelves and parents see and do nothing. I've had to calmly ask a child "hey honey lets not climb on that you can get hurt" and at the parent flipping out for daring to discipline THEIR CHILD. Well, I wouldn't have to if you would.

I guess everyone here has had perfect kids that never have had an accident. I'm with you 6:18, That is a really stupid place to have such an expensive piece. It's a freaking Community Center! not a museum. I'm not saying she was not at fault for not doing her part effectively, but even the best parents cannot say their kids haven't had accidents.

Reminds me of when I got the sh*t beat out of my at 5 because I tipped over a glass of lemonade. Oh yes, my parents were watching!

I wouldn't pay a cent. I wouldn't care if a court ordered me too. I'd quit my job and sit on welfare. This is what insurance is for. Accidents happen and demanding a parent pay 132k for something in a community center where kids go is idiotic.
