WBOC Excited About Local Business Closing Their Doors

After almost two decades of serving the Salisbury community, the Old West Steak House closed their doors for good yesterday. WBOC's broadcast this morning never shared how it's a shame yet another local business is closing their doors. Instead, they gave free advertising for the "tag sale" hoping to get a large crowd of people to show up and purchase the memorabilia.

In their heyday, Old West employed quite a few people. Royal Farms purchased the property. The owner chose not to renew his lease and instead he will temporarily retire and take a break.

Just keep in mind people, you are not seeing local politicians taking pictures of businesses opening their doors with ribbon cuttings. Instead, the City of Salisbury is growing government and using taxpayer money to open a non profit day care, marathons and even a festival. This is what I call putting good money after bad money. The time to do those things is when your commercial space is all rented out and your local economy is thriving.

WBOC proved once again they are a joke and celebrate business closings. They have to believe their viewers are just plain stupid.

WBOC has become nothing more than a reality show majoring in gossip.

OH man we just went by there Friday and I said to my spouse we need to go there after Christmas. Sad to see it go. They had good food.

What a shame that the only news that WBOC cares to announce is to the vultures to come pick clean the carcass of yet another dead local business.

As Jake marches through his Main Street destruction zone shouting, "It's Happening!"

Stay tuned. Several more closings in the works following the holidays

Why do you people stay there if everything is so bad? Sounds like you aren't the brightest bulbs in the box.

8:36 AM because not everone has the $thousands it takes to move. because their house is worth less than they paid. because you need a job to make money to move.

Why do you people ask such stupid insulting questions. proof that you are not the brights bulb in the box.

8:36, Some of us did in fact leave. In fact, most of the people who own major businesses in Salisbury have also relocated to the County and even Worcester County.

As for many others, they are buried in homes that were overpriced and have been honorable enough to continue to make painful mortgage payments.

I must help clarify a few details. Royal Farms has always owned that strip of shops. I use to manage Kobi's Steakhouse when it occupied that space. Our lease was negotiated with Royal Farms corporate office in Baltimore. Royal Farms decided not to renew Old West's lease. It is my understanding that Royal Farm will tear down part of that strip and put in a car wash.

Honestly, I was referring to the entire area not just Salisbury. Other than the tourism industry in OC, the entire area is dead economically. Home prices have failed to rebound as they have in a majority of the country, there are no jobs to speak of and little home of jobs ever returning to the area. The only people making money are business owners, slum lords, doctors and lawyers.

It's sad they are closing. But I've seen several interviews with the owner who says he's tired of running this business and wants to move on to his family and something new.
We ate here once and the food was not good at all. The steaks were tough as shoe leather. That was about 15 years ago. We never returned.
It's not WBOC's fault he's closing. I'd never known it if it wasn't on their newscast.

Let's clear this up. I said in my post, "he will temporarily retire and take a break". He has NOT stated he will reopen anything. Perhaps he will do like Vinny and guest cook at another local restaurant, who knows. I'm sure Royal Farms did in fact end his contract but the owner knew this. IF there was light at the end of the tunnel in Salisbury I'm sure the owner would've stated he has future plans. I think we all know better though.

I drove from N.Sby to fruitland the other day and couldn't believe the number of places that had gone out of business, it's a real shame, something is not right.

8:58, Well I can't argue or disagree with that comment.

Now that we have industrial sized chicken farms popping up ALL over the county no amount of marathons or festivals will save the county. Who wants to run in a marathon, visit a festival or dine out when all around you there is the stench of hundreds of thousands of chickens. There goes the opportunity to capitalize on our unique ecotourism avenues. The new chicken farm on Levin Dasheill Rd is as big if not bigger than a super Walmart and that's just one of them. I understand chickens play a vital part here in the county but we are losing sight of how to bring this area back and are just contributing to the detriment of it. Let's not forget the shootings and all the people that are hooked on heroin. My home is bought and paid for and I've put a lot of sweat equity into it. I would leave but we are just years short of retiring from a state job with a full pension and benefits.

Smart people are getting out of Maryland. The state is a satellite state of the Russian empire.

The Old West Steak House was at one time a very decent place to eat. In the last 3 years the cleanliness, service and food quality has dropped drastically. Along with that the atmosphere of the restaurant changed, drunks being loud and obnoxious in the bar area and stench of wet molded carpet. A owner of a business realizes this also and SHOULD take immediate action to correct, sadly he didn't! Some how it will be the City Of Salisbury's or WBOC fault.

“Serving the community “. ?

It was a business not the Red Cross.

If the business owners are making money then the economy is not dead. Your comment is not thought out very well! Not to mention, the article is about a local BUSINESS closing. If you can't read, don't bother writing.

Sadly that’s not true anymore. They used to have really good food but the quality has steadily declined over the past few years. Used to be one of our families favorite places to eat. Kids loved it, atmosphere was always fun. Last time we went there the place was dirty, food was dreadful. Shame to see it go though. Pity it couldn’t have been saved/revitalized.

Yes WBOC must like displacing of unemployed families around the Christmas holiday. After all another car wash employees so many more people.

There no different than the democrat politicians here,no help for struggling businesses.

I was thinking the same thing

Non profits mostly serve themselves.

Ok. You going to buy my house at fair market value so I can leave? Easy to criticize when you’re on the outside looking in. You’re probably one of the toads that just walked away from their mortgage and let those of us that pay ours on time pay the penalty.

You should take your own advice. Based on the number of business, small and large, that have closed over the last few years, there’s no doubt that Salisbury is dying economically. A Dollar General on every corner and shiny new section 8 housing being thrown up all over the place doesn’t make it a thriving economy.

12:05 I sold most of my MD property before the crash. I still own a few residential and commercial properties free and clear. I would not buy anything in MD. I became a resident of a Red state with no state income tax. I live in MD a few months out of the year and travel the rest of the year. Sounds like you failed to see the writing on the wall and want to blame others for your shortcomings.

10:03 - Not when the businesses are collection agencies, pawn shops, payday loans places and used car lots. Look around at the businesses that opening up. Sex toy stores, tattoo places, smoke shops selling drug paraphernalia, stop n shop food stores, low prices cell phone stores and fast food joints. Yeah, this area is booming. SMH.

No offense but Old West's food has been sub par for awhile now. We stopped going there a few years ago because the food fell below it's previous standards. WBOC's celebration is hilarious because it's the ailing station who should be shuttering their doors. Their news shows are ridiculous and amateurish worse the high school PBS broadcasts. For all the pomp and circumstance about their spiffy studio, they don't actually report anything we can't find on AP or any other place that features news. Unfortunately, they stopped reporting real local news a long time ago. Now they're just a weigh station for hopefuls who want to move to bigger markets. No real journalists exist there and they refuse to hire the ones who are here locally that end up working for Baltimore/DC outlets.

I may live here temporarily, I don't work or spend much money here. Salisbury is going through the death rattle. Does the Section 8 crowd like folk music? Hmmm probably not.
