U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Begins Jetty, Dredging Projects in MD-01

WASHINGTON, DC: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is starting work on two projects that will benefit residents of Smith Island in Somerset County, Maryland. The projects entail the construction of two jetties to improve navigation at Rhodes Point and dredging the Big Thorofare and Twitch Cove federal channels. Congressman Andy Harris (MD-01), who advocated for the projects, issued the following statement in support of the projects:

“I commend the Army Corps of Engineers for their attention to these important projects. The residents of Smith Island heavily depend on these channels for transportation to and from the mainland, and to receive shipments of goods. Severe erosion and shoaling have concerned the Marylanders living on Smith Island for years now, so the Army Corps’ plan to complete the projects in fall 2018 is welcome news.”

I'm glad Dr. Harris made this a personal goal to get these projects started. Thank you Congressman.
