Viewer Comment: Salisbury is Gone

In response to the Folk Festival article today:

Salisbury will never go back to being that postcard picture some of us grew up with. There's no way it can happen because the new demographics moved here and changed the politics along with everything else we held dear in this area. It's a shame we sold ourselves out like cheap goods at a flea market but what's done is done.

The dye has been cast, so if you long for the old Eastern Shore, you'd be better off relocating to Cambridge, Easton, Princess Anne or Berlin because this town is incapable of going back to what it once was. It's been sold off for parts by local business leaders and there's nothing left resembling what the old timers loved about the area.

Far from the farming community it used to be, Salisbury is not where it's at anymore. It's just a mishmash of fakery and posers trying to be cool. It's never going back to those days of old so why continue to belly ache about it. The locals sold themselves and their children for momentary hipdom.

It only took three mayors to kill Salisbury.

Anonymous said...

Alea iacta est indeed.

Have to disagree, Salisbury was sustainable until Days ignorance and so called vision for Salisbury. I have to agree with publisher the demographics have changed and the agenda is to create a inner harbor type atmosphere. Salisbury will be belly up in a decade

1116 you're living in a popsicle world. Salisbury hasn't been anything close to what we loved about it for a good decade now. Martin was the last mayor who held any values or empathy for the citizens. The rest have just worked really hard to help sell us out to highest bidder.

Wow you cannot blame everthing wrong in salisbury on the mayors, police chiefs, sherrifs. Come on people, this is life. Our culture has changed. People have no morals, respect, care of others. The whole world has changed. No one person, office, political party, has done this. It is how people are. Mean, perverts, uncaring, do their on thing and try to make everyone else accept their way. Its sad, we used to teach our kids to watch out for strangers, not to add to tgat we must teach our kids to watch out for our own family members who are freaks. Sad how things have gotten.

If you would read and actually try to understand I didn't say it was anything like it used to be I merely stated that if the right person was elected to lead Salisbury there was still hope to save the once cherished way of life here. My question to you and your narrow mind us what exactly is the way it used to be three decades ago? I challenge you to give me one example of ANYTHING that still remains the same from Martins era

Anonymous said...

It has been gone for sometime. We clung to nostalgia as the world around us progressed only to wake up and find ourselves left behind. There is no going back and no going forward now.

Anonymous said...

There are none 1134.

Ironic isn't it? Back in the day, Salisbury turned its nose down on little towns like the ones mentioned in this comment. They (Salisbury) thought they were so much better and more cultured than the little towns surrounding them. Now, those towns look better and are run better than Salisbury. Funny how time has a way of balancing out scales and restoring humility.

A decade? Try 25 years or so.Its nothing but crime and expensive firehouses and toys for them to play with. The college and the hospital are keepng it just above baltimore and chitown crime rates.Let Lewis and the county boys take over the city there sure is enough of them to do it.

Anonymous said...

Did you salisbury really think crime wasnt going to happen here? Its everywhere, i agree many years ago you didnt here about rapes, stabbings, shootings, here in our little salisbury. But people act, talk, do their own ways, with no reguards or cares for their even their own lives
No mayor can fix whats wrong, dont care who they are, they cant change hearts. And thats needs what needs changing.

Add Seaford to the list of towns that will never make it back. Total section 8 with few jobs.

Just remember 1202, the fate you wish on others is the one you get for yourself. Have a nice life!

Anonymous said...

How about across the street from the court house parking lot on the weekends selling used mattress and making Salisbury look like a slum market .

Anonymous said...

and here come the racists and bigots @12:02 are you a homophobe to?

Anonymous said...

12:02 we will keep fighting until there is no fight left in us. If you could see past the racist nose on your face you would also see that times for most were a lot better back then. The economy, family, It didnt take 3 incomes to survive without getting state help, Children had manners, yes there were some bad kids but most did try to teach their children manners and respect. Was it perfect? No but most had the ideals of Family and God and morals and respect and manners and love for one another. And yes many whites also stood up for the rights of others. If they did not you would not have gotten as far as you did, meaning overlooked and ignored in your plight. Its not a fight that you have faced alone thru the years. Yes bad ugly people existed and still do, but it serves NOBODY in grouping and looping all of us in one basket. Give peace a chance! You have to give it to get it.

The problem is young people today have no morals or values. Who's fault is this? Their parents. Being handed everything with no expectation of reciprocation is exactly what led to the youth today having nothing but greed in their hearts. When I say younger, I mean people Jimmy Ireton's age and younger. As a whole, they have nothing to offer anyone but think nothing of coming with their hands out. Used to be men and women had pride, which kept them from taking handouts. Today's kids have no pride so taking handouts becomes a way of life.

Anonymous said...

It's clear to see 1202 has no morals or values. They don't even value human life. It's also clear he or she has no respect for their elders either.

Anonymous said...

Princess Anne? Really? You must not have been there lately!

Salisbury is the reflection of the hearts that live in it's borders! EVIL

I have to wholeheartedly agree with this article.

My wife and I just rode down Cedar Way, Pine Way, Cherry Way, Zion Road, and then we went down Snow Hill Road (past SBY's latest new business Peninsula Alternative (marijuana) dispensary) - then we rode down Mt Hermon Road.

Observation: The whole town looks dilapidated, economically depressed, and there is no resemblance to its former glory. There were homeless walking in today's rain, and one almost walked directly in the pathway of my car while I was traversing on Gordy Road. He looked as though he was stoned on drugs.

Anonymous said...

The small towns mentioned that surround Salisbury have nowhere the crime rate. As bad as it is you would be shocked if you knew how much is being covered up.

Anonymous said...

There is no doubt Day is covering up a lot, 138. We're all convinced that Day has covered up more than we'd ever imagine. We know Jimmy & Barrie covered up a lot, too.

Salisbury has become a town full of drifters, deadbeats, drug addicts, homeless, and fleeing businesses. In fact the entire State looks as though it has been foreclosed upon as their are hordes and hordes of abandoned properties on virtually every neighborhood street. Even the Centre of Salisbury Mall looks pathedic. And as far as downtown Salisbury, ONE STILL CAN'T RIDE ON MAIN STREET!!! It's closed!!

Anonymous said...

Salisbury doesn't want hardworking middle class families anymore. That goes against the ghetto creed.

Anonymous said...

When do you plan on moving out of the basement, Son? It's getting more and more difficult for your mother and I to manage your allowance on SS. And you'll have your own in a few years, if you find a job

Anonymous said...

A few weeks ago, I traveled on Route 50 back from Baltimore. After the Vienna bridge, and moving closer to town, the whole world looked depressed. Houses all torn up, dead deer on the side of the road and abandoned businesses lined the road as you enter Salisbury. The town has been dilapidating for a while now. It's so depressing it convinced me once and for all, it's time to get my family out of here.

Never seen so many homeless people and buses dropping off Haitian people in my years here, must be a treasure trove of welfare and benefits being handed out.

Sing to the tune of the Beverly Hillbillies

Come and listen to a story bout a man named Jake
Thought he was important but he proved he was a fake
And then one day he rode into Salisbury
And decided to make it the worst in history.
Thief he is, why is a mystery

Well the first thing you know ol Jake's the town Mayor
Jakettes said to Jake, Now we all want our share
They said, We all backed you so now you will back us
Took a selfie of himself and threw them all under the bus.
Ugly man too. Inside and out.

Anonymous said...

How's that rebranding project working out for you, Jake? Glad to see the stupid commercial featuring you is finally off air. There is a God.

Anonymous said...

What happen to Salisbury.....Easy one word answer.......DRUGS

Anonymous said...

Section 8 housing killed Salisbury, It created more crime which drives out families.

Anonymous said...

The reasons why Salisbury is gone are endless but when it all boils down to local business and government leaders driving in the final coffin nails, that's the real deal. You voted for hippy dippy people who thought they could conquer the world and instead, they conquered you!

Anonymous said...

Hey @2:54 dickhead, you stated you drove through?? Obviously you didn't have the stones to want to stop anywhere. "I DROVE THROUGH" bit u was too scared to stop.

I blame people like John Cannon who knew what Salisbury used to be and seek to destroy it. Shame on you, John.

Traffic lights all work, saw two City Police Officers, power is on down on the plaza....idiots Salisbury hasn't gone anywhere, two Mayors or the next three to come....call your whambulance and get a new pacifier!!!!

October 29, 2017 at 2:54 PM

"..power is on down on the plaza..." and YOU have the nerve to call anyone a dumb ass?? lol

Anonymous said...

Section 8 housing and rental properties are the cause. Crap attracts flies.

Anonymous said...

To 2:54 Poster - For crying out loud, SBY cannot keep its own Main Street open - and not to mention the ongoing construction that lasted months & even years on RT 13 North. A high ranking Chipotle official even informed me that they were considering closing at their northern RT13 location because of the saga.

Plain-and-simple, there are no viable workforce businesses left in our area. In case you haven't noticed, they are all gone (Dresser, Crown, Campbells, Maxum/Bayliner, Standard Register, Grumman, Allied, Delaware Lumber and I could go on-and-on). I totally agree with the article - Salisbury really is GONE!

Anonymous said...

A farming community? When was Salisbury a farming community? I grew up on a farm until the state used imminent domain to take our farm to build the rt.13 bypass over 45 years ago. From around 1975 until 2000 Salisbury was a full blown manufacturing town: K&L Microwave, Peninsula Press, Dresser, Crown Cork and Seal, etc. Since then Salisbury has sadly turned into a service/college town

The result of pandering to minority demands. Consistent with most major cities in the U.S. I grew up in the fifties in Snow Hill. Segregation worked and, for the benefit of all, should be re instituted.

The Bypass was the first salvo in the demise of Salisbury.

Salisbury is essentially a, "Crap hole."

Anonymous said...

1:54 u have no idea! There are county funded employees at the bus station giving dozens of illegal aliens instructions in Spanish on how to use heating thermostats and cooking systems in America every week. They literally set up classrooms in the hallway of the Government building where shore transit is located using prepared flip charts and leaflets on infrastructure. Occasionally a group of Syrian men with a woman or two get ushered through too. The whole property (formerly a private business Filtronic Comtech) is a taxpayer sucking sponge!! Zero employee productivity and the outgoing budget is millions in salary alone not to mention the entitlements walking out the door. Many there are proud to sponge off the taxpayers for doing nothing, they even gloat about it. From the unemployment office to building management, transportation, the library and social services, the entire building could shut down tomorrow and save the taxpayers hundreds of millions and no one would notice. AND, a lot of overpaid lazy thieves could be sent packing back to the real world.

The prison, the university's growth and lack of onsite student housing, and the love of money from politicians who welcomed developers with open arms without thinking of the consequences have ruined the Salisbury area.

Anonymous said...

All thanks to the baltimorons that came here. They in no way wanted to live here, and made fun of us down here too. But when they retired they moved down here because it was safer and brought their lousy way of life with them.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, but it was the local pols responsible! NOT the locals!
Apparently there's nothing we can do. . We've tried.

Anonymous said...

Not inner harbor...inner city Baltimore atmosphere.

Anonymous said...

Yep...what made Salisbury special was the rural farm community where the farm and home show was a big event. Since the arrival of ECI and far too much Section 8 housing, Salisbury has become a sad, crime ridden, blight of society. A few more years of work and I'll be leaving. Salisbury is the Detroit of rural America.

Anonymous said...

Another idiot with a half baked uninformed opinion.

Anonymous said...

12:02...you are a sad piece of garbage.

Part of the reason Salisbury looks so decrepit is because it has NO ECONOMY! Plain - and - simple, between the Maryland legislature and, the City, State, & County, planning & zoning laws, they have made it almost impossible for businesses to co-exist. It's as though a large bulls eye (target) has been placed on every street corner business! The only way to remedy the condition is a clean sweep to get rid of all of the politicians.

But just wait and see, the next City, County, & State elections are just around the corner and everyone will be touting: "A rising tide raises all ships" - when in reality - the status-quo politicians have been nothing more than huge ballast anchors that have helped to sink the floating ship.
They (politicians) just don't seem to get it!!!

Anonymous said...

Responding to 9:14 Posting: Have you ridden-up just north of the MD line into Delaware? The areas economy is booming, many of these businesses have now relocated into Delaware. You really need to see it, there are hordes of new businesses springing up just north of the Maryland line.

Anonymous said...

MD's business environment is simply to hostile.

I have tried to maintain the opinion that if you want something done let it be heard, voice your opinion to the source of the problem. But I have to say since Day has been in office I get no answers nor do the neighborhoods unless it is the better neighborhoods or a city council person lives there or someone notable in the news, or our city's government. We have still Presidents Neighbors people called constantly requested constantly for answers, a burp anything as to the investigations into shootings. We have left calls to the person's name we were given ---no answers or interest in even returning the calls. I will say this when Ireton was our mayor I had a contact he responded within a few days with either a visit, call or e-mail. Same thing w/ Barry Tilghman we had shootings across the street she showed up the next day and went directly alone to that house to confront the people, and they were out within days. This mayor does not care, I have asked repeatedly that he restart the Roundtable Meetings for people in neighborhoods having real problems-no answer. So where do we go from here? Can't afford to move, houses are real low because of the area so not sold they are now boarded up, forclosed and abandoned properties.

Anonymous said...

11:45 AM - That said houses are real low because of the area - boarded up, foreclosed, . . .

Response: Yep, I have noticed it also. The whole town is poverty stricken, ripe for crime, subsidies, no businesses. Let's face it SBY is done!
