Good Guy with a Gun Could Have Stopped Vegas Shooter Before Mass Shooting

Following Sheriff Joe Lombardo’s October 9 announcement that Mandalay Bay security guard Jesus Campos actually discovered Stephen Paddock six minutes before the attack began, it is only natural to wonder if Campos could have stopped the attack–had he been armed.

But The Daily Beast (TDB) reports that Campos was not armed when he discovered Paddock. Therefore, he was at Paddock’s mercy and ended up shot and wounded.

The day after the attack, Breitbart News reported Mandalay Bay’s 2012 guidelines for private security, which mandate that guards are banned from carrying “weapons of any kind.” The guidelines define weapons as “guns, knives, nightsticks, mace, pepper spray, stun guns etc.,” all of which are designated as “strictly prohibited on Mandalay Bay property.”

What if the security guard who discovered Paddock six minutes before the attack had been armed?

The role of the security is becoming curious. The Sheriff all but blamed Campos of the timeline revision. He said it may have been due to him being injured and the chaos.
What I keep going to is Steve Wynn's slip up when interviewed by Fox's Chris Wallace on Sunday. He said something about service elevators and how in his hotels a security guard has to accompany a guest in one. Wallace was like what- what- what's this about the service elevator. Never heard that mentioned before Wallace said. Wynn then tried to walk back the comment saying it was a precaution taken in his hotels and quickly changed the subject because he realized his mistake.

I saw this story on 60 Minutes on Sunday where they talked with the cops that formed the "SWAT" team to take out the shooter. They said the doors in the hall way were intentionally jammed shut. Don't remember what they said about the elevators. The shooter had a food cart sitting at his door with cameras wired to it. He brought in drills and a lot of wiring. He put cameras every where and had an arsenal. I have no idea how another guy with a gun could have taken out this shooter.

Just to clear up some questions about getting guns into Vegas hotel suites.

I live in Vegas, have for 42 years. As a licensed commercial/entertainment photographer and a photojournalist for 26 years, I have some insight into the gun issue and the rooms question.

I have rented some of the most expensive rooms in Vegas for photoshoots, including The VIP A and B Suites at Golden Nugget shown here when Ray Nack and I were setting up the suit after a weekend of photographing three Playboy Centerfolds http://dizeman.com/suite/ and am very familiar with the Wynn and MGM properties.

YES! It is true, you are not allowed to take your own luggage into the VIP Suites in these properties. Though I have, it is not allowed and frowned upon.

I have had to customize golf bags and snow ski cases to fit light stands and tripods so that the Bellman would not question what was in the bags and no, they did not look.

Sometimes, depending on who is on duty, management frowns upon photoshoots in the VIP suites where parties, meetings and gatherings are NOT ALLOWED.

These suites are reserved for VIP guests and the noise is expected to be at a minimum.

As you might guess by the photos of the VIP A Suite at the Golden Nugget, they don't want a lot of light stands which could fall over and damage tables, mirrors etc., so they frown upon these.

However, there are often GUN SHOWS and SHOOTING TOURNAMENTS in Las Vegas, so it is not unusual AT ALL to see Hunters, Sport Shooters, Gun Show VENDORS arrive at a hotel with half a dozen or so LONG RIFLES in Cases or a dozen handguns also in cases, which they keep in their rooms or they let the Concierge keep them in the house safe if they leave.

As with my photoshoots and my 6 to 8 foot lightstands in cases, even though the VIP SUITES I have stayed in DEMAND YOU ALLOW THEM TO TAKE YOUR GEAR TO THE ROOM, in at least one case, I sauntered past the Reservation Desk directly to the VIP ELEVATOR and did take my gear up without a Bellman present.

IT IS NEVER IMPOSSIBLE TO CIRCUMVENT THE POLICIES AND SECURITY OF ANY PLACE.. You may remember the housekeeper who turned the corner in the White House during Obama's stay to come face to face with an unannounced intruder.

But, for those who question HOW the shooter got so many guns past security and into a VIP SUITE? It is not hard at all and very often, the Bellman would help the VIP GUEST transport the guns to the room, because guns come and go all the time in hotels all over the world.

I am licensed to carry my weapon concealed in three states, Nevada, Utah and Florida. Those three licenses allow me through reciprocity of a multi-state agreement... to carry concealed in 39 states in the U.S. I ALWAYS CARRY A CONCEALED Springfield Armory, XDs 9mm/4inch and an extra mag. everywhere I go, unless it is one of the few government restricted zones.

After Steve Wynn installs his METAL DETECTORS and starts his body wanding and searches of luggage and bags... I WILL NO LONGER VISIT A WYNN/MGM PROPERTY.

I am not going to surrender my being able to defend my own life, because of somebody else's fear. I will void all properties with screenings and metal detectors.

But, that is how guns are transported into VIP SUITES. IT IS A NORMAL EVENT! HAPPENS ALL THE TIME!

I think it is irresponsible to ask someone to put on a SECURITY uniform and then demand they be unarmed. That is putting a target on their chest with no way to defend their lives.

There are Security programs here in Vegas that put Guards through a very similar course as police and they have to be trained on how and when to use their weapons. We have MANY of those trained professional security personnel in Vegas and they are armed.

If a bad guy has a gun in a casino and has decided killing someone is not an obstacle for him or her... Then a guy shows up wearing a SECURITY UNIFORM, he is very likely going to be killed, because of that uniform and what it represents to the bad guy... he should never be asked to surrender his safety, because someone else is afraid of guns.

I would never put on a SECURITY UNIFORM without a gun... that's like yelling, "HERE I AM... SHOOT ME!"

a security guard with a pistol would have be wasted with the firearms this idiot had.
