Day Slashes Police & Fire Dept Budget to Fund Folk Festival

While crime skyrockets in Salisbury, Maryland, Mayor Jake Day is proposing to remove $61,128.00 from the Salisbury Police and Fire Departments. The reason, he needs to hire a Director/Manager for his National Folk Festival.

I have been told by someone who used to be in the business of what Jake is looking for and they said, there's no way he's going to hire someone who knows what they are doing for that little money. I replied, you know Jake, he'll just hire another  recent graduate from SU and give them the title, (once again) without any experience.

I wonder when Jake will hire a motocross professional from SU to chase after the people riding throughout the City illegally. Maybe I shouldn't give him any ideas.

Thanks to the person who provided this: (Click Images to Enlarge)

He wants to hire a Director for this folk music farce for $61k? Hilarious! He obviously doesn't know or understand how things work in the music biz! Is he prepared to pay this person points on the show's gross proceeds? LOL 😂 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Anonymous said...

Is Salisbury also going to build full service hotels to accommodate artist riders? Bet that hasn't even been addressed yet. I'm wondering if the promoter has even come to Salisbury to inspect it for this festival. When that happens he should be worried they'll pull out because in any talent package contract they reserve that right right up to sound check. This will be fun to observe.

Anonymous said...

This festival has all the marks of Woodstock. That show was a disaster in reality. Property damage, food & toilet shortages, rapes and other crimes, lack of proper security.

All cost the promoter most of their revenue. It wasn't all love festing as the romantic memories behold. It turned into a nightmare for the people sponsoring the show. Jake will get a learning experience he'll never forget. Unfortunately if he f***s this up the Salisbury area won't be able to attract even B tours and on-offs for decades to come. Good luck with that. 😂😂😂😂

Like I said in the post, Jake has no clue what he's doing but he will hire another dumbass, (like all the kids in his office) to play a manager. This is all about Jake taking care of his friends, (again) at the expense of the taxpayers.

Now isn't this interesting how no Firefighters or Police Officers have commented on this post. They THINK I'm full of crap or I'm making it up, they're wrong.

The Mayor doesn't give a crap about First Responders, he's all talk. He should've taken the funds from his Let's Paint A Rock fund instead.

What say you now First Responders?

Anonymous said...

Salisbury doesn't have the demo for this. Day is attempting to do some Firefly thing but he forgets he needs county involvement to pull it off. Not too many 'farms' with tons of land in city limits! Now that he's lied and pissed off the county exec will he get cooperation! DALE CARNEGIE, Jakester! This is a fiasco in the making.

PS you depend on Fire, EMS & Police to help an outside security with these types of shows so cutting their budget cuts your own throat in these circumstances. Good luck!!!!

Anonymous said...

Over his head once again.

Anonymous said...

If Jake were music business savvy he'd realize he needs a massive cash base to operate from. I don't think his dippy Little Rock painting garden budget would even scratch the surface. These types of music festivals generally have operating budgets in the millions because there are literally hundreds of minute details and things you have to pay for. Some examples but not all are;
Security
Catering for talent & road crew
Talent riders (which ain't cheap)
Venue insurance
Etc etc etc.

No one on Jake's team has that kind of experience and for that measly salary no one with experience will touch it.

Example of Millennial stupidity; SU paid $12k for an act that did a one-off from DC when they usually fetch $3-5K for shows. Meaning they paid over DOUBLE for a free concert plus the talent got pissed because they didn't have 75% of their rider items. Why? Because those items couldn't be procured from local stores and the dipshit staff at SU didn't plan ahead like real promoters do.

He's in for a bad time. I've seen talent pulled right before showtime because their rider wasn't fulfilled.

Anonymous said...

Hell, I've pulled my own acts when things weren't right with shows so I know from experience. Riders and accommodations are in the contract so suing the talent and their management is fruitless because if you don't fulfill those items they can walk legally unscathed. I know because I've done it and told other managers in the small industry about the experience. Which means managers reject offers in the future from the same outfit. Word gets around fast in the entertainment industry.

Anonymous said...

It's unbelievable he's done this.
Where is his common sense??
Don't bother to answer ---I know,
he has none!

Anonymous said...

How is he going to get hire local crew when the ones who know what they're doing work for the county at the WICOMICO CIVIC CENTER? The same county Boda and Day were laughing at in a council meeting no more than three weeks ago! Okay. Let us know how that works out for you!

Anonymous said...

Is the City Attorney well versed in entertainment law? Did Salisbury hire an entertainment attorney to oversee this situation? I'm laughing as I write this because I know the language is very different and Jake will need a lawyer who specializes in that area of law. Don't think the Eastern Shore is brimming over with lawyers with that specific expertise.

Anonymous said...

Only music business professionals I've seen in this area are people with tour buses. They aren't the best source for package show information and guidance.

Anonymous said...

By the way, Entertainment Lawyers fetch around $500-700 per hour. Can the city afford such a bill? Seriously doubt it considering they're not even working on a legal budget right now.

Anonymous said...

Just what 'venue' is this little festival going to take place? 200,000 people he claims? Where are these people going to stay? Is Jake going to force residents to take them in like any good communist would do in this circumstance? Clearly, Mr. Day hasn't thought this all the way through. It just sounded good when he thunk it up. He's in for a very turbulent ride - one we'll all get to witness in real time.

Anonymous said...

He'd have to double that $61,000 amount to get a real pro in there to run the show on the city's end. Anything less and he's looking at lawsuit extravaganza.

Anonymous said...

Will Jake be going through the M&Ms to pick out all the brown ones?

Anonymous said...

9:07 AM ha ha ha a folk festival is nothing like woodstock. Geesh.

To everyone else. Isn't that what the last 2 over paid hires were supposed to do? Didn't his campaign manager - Glanz? - do the ghetto-festival? Wasn't that why she and the parks kid were hired, to orchestra this stuff? That's what he said and promoted as to their experience.

I bet she was hired to run his campaign, at the taxpayers expense, as a city employee.

Anonymous said...

1031 when you engage pack shows like the Folk Festival which has it's own brand much like Lollapalooza and Monsters of Rock, you are playing in the big leagues. Day and Glanz have ZERO experience in the real music business. They have now engaged a monster that will end up getting the city sued more than bring revenue. Music Business pros don't play around with backyard productions and they don't like it when novice try to play in the game. Day is no Bill Graham or Doc McGhee. He has no clue what the hell he's doing. As for the festival not being Woodstock, if you were in the music business, you'd understand that reference without pause. It shows your lack of understanding why Woodstock holds significance and a prime example of how everything that can go wrong does go wrong.

Anonymous said...

Even if he gutted the police and fire department budgets he still wouldn't have half the cash to pay for what's about to unfold with this folk music fiasco.

Anonymous said...

$61,000? Get it from all of the businesses that will turn a larger profit from the event. It's a drop in the bucket to them if it's fully spread around, but it's a significant amount to remove from police and fire service funding.

Anonymous said...

If Day knew what he was doing he would have hired this person BEFORE making any deals for a folk festival. Shows his naivete which will lead to losing big money for Salisbury.

Anonymous said...

He is taking that fat check he got from the county for fire services and spending on other things. The volunteers would have spent it more wisely

I just looked up this show and it's a three-day event now being held in Greensboro, NC. Unlike Greensboro, Salisbury doesn't have the services to support this kind of thing at all. What in the hell is the city government thinking? They can't control the crime and gang situation and yet they think they can deal with this?

Anonymous said...

Remember the Fyre Festival? We're going to have the Eastern Shores version of it!

Anonymous said...

Artist riders? WTH do you think is coming here? It is a bunch of hippie musicians that probably will be living in VW buses and tents while here.

Anonymous said...

1059 maybe you should read the site before making such a stupid comment. Yes, artists. Are you saying folk artists are less than other artists? You are a jerk!

Anonymous said...

1059 sounds like Woodstock to me!

Anonymous said...

10:40 AM you are just another born here who never ventured off the shore. I have been to music festivals that bring them in by the millions, and are held in city venues like the folk festival and no one thinks woodstock. So your idiotic reference to woodstock without pause in the music business is pure dribble. To compare a folk festival to fire fly is simply ignorant.

Educate yourself and google musikfest bethlehem pa.

They pride themselves on classy festivals going 35+ years strong and there is absolutely no similarity to woodstock. I have been attending since it started. Spent a few years volunteering.

You are a complete idiot with no valid commentary on music festivals.

Anonymous said...

1108 you have no idea how wrong you are but I'll just let you continue to live your fantasy. That's the beauty of anonymity is you have no clue what I've done in my lifetime nor will you ever.

Anonymous said...

I call bullsh** on 1108. If the person really volunteered for this outfit then they'd know its not a simple event in someone's backyard. It ain't no birthday party or backyard production. It's a huge deal that entails millions of little details all of which can be flubbed costing hundreds of thousands. My guess is 1108 is just one of the 6 idiots in Day's office trying to defraud the public and keep voters from seeing the truth about this stupid event and the city's painfully lack of any knowledge about hosting it.

Anonymous said...

1126 I'll bet Day is the one writing that crap. He's all about the social media thing.

Anonymous said...

Glad they will publicize the dates so I can get my family out of town that weekend. I was at Woodstock and its not something I want my grandkids to see. Thanks but no thanks.

Anonymous said...

If Jake Day still takes money from the police and fire budget after that horrific accident yesterday it will show just how cruel hearted we already know he is.

Anonymous said...

One has to wonder what possessed the leaders of the Festival to select Salisbury. Truly - what were they thinking??!!!!

Anonymous said...

1143 like the voters here, they were probably lied to by Day and Company They probably have no idea about any of the gang violence and crime that goes on. Someone should spill the beans to them. I doubt if this thing will even happen. Once the Board finds out what a sham they've been proposed by Salisbury, they'll likely pull out. You can't build a foundation based on lies and BS. That crap may work with the Good Ole boys but it won't work on a national level.

Anonymous said...

What is the demo for this festival? The hippies that go to the 3rd Friday crap? I've been to a couple and it depends on what's going on for all of them to turn up. Where is this big concert going to be done? Headquarters Live. Oh wait, that's closing. Again, where is this big concert going to be done?

Anonymous said...

I absolutely wish no one any harm and my ONLY staying around in what Salisbury has become is to keep an eye on my elderly parents but Day gas absolutely no clue about what he's doing and until his ridiculous cuts come back and bite him in the ass and touch him on a more personal level

Anonymous said...

So which is it? $20,000 from police or fire? $41,000+ from fire or police?

Anonymous said...

This is just one of many gaffs the Day Administration has pulled since 2015 when he won by default. There is no real leadership there just a bunch of kids playing at government with no experience or common sense. Three crappy mayors and look what's happened to Salisbury. A big fat subZero nothing but crappy results.

Anonymous said...

"NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SALISBURY, MARYLAND, THAT THE City’s Fiscal Year 2018 General Fund Budget be amended as follows:
1) Increase Business Development by $61,128
2) Decrease Fire Department by $20,000
3) Decrease Police Department by $41,128"

They are taking $41,128 from the Police and $20,000 from the Fire Department to make up what they plan to pay the Director for this festival fiasco.

Anonymous said...

This starts 9/1/2017. Wow! Day doesn't waste any time turning on his 'family' does he?

Anonymous said...

Oh, it's supposed to be at the future amphitheater on the River Walk? The one where there is no real space for it to be built. Or will it be on the Downtown Plaza molesting all the condo owners in that area for three straight days? Taxpayers be damned, the festival is much more important than taxpayers being able to enjoy the condos they bought and paid for.

Anonymous said...

Day is robbing the Fire & Police departments to fund this joke? Are you serious?

Anonymous said...

Of course, he is 1223, what do you expect? He's hoping no one is paying attention so he can pull off this sham. You the taxpayer pays for this debauchery and I don't feel one bit sorry for any of you. You should have found someone competent to run for mayor instead of settling for a default one. Jake knows one history only: Tammany Hall. He's Boss Tweed and Jimmy Walker reincarnated.

Anonymous said...

Who is Boss Tweed? Palmer Gillis maybe?

Anonymous said...

Whichever 1229. I was saying in a tongue and cheek way, Day and his posse are corrupt to the core! If you want to save Salisbury, quit voting in corruption.

Anonymous said...

Can't believe the National Council for for Traditional Arts fell for whatever Jake told them about this area. They didn't do their own homework. This blog would have popped up immediately with a simple google search.

Anonymous said...

He should get his teeth fixed.

Anonymous said...

He won't even bother to get an SU graduate. He'll just find another drinking buddy to fill the position.
Apparently neither degrees nor experience matter to him. His current city admin is publicly posting on Facebook, outright bragging that even though she failed out of school there (yes, she admitted it) that she is now a "dignitary" at SU. What a way to welcome new students and encourage them to not take their studies seriously. Get drunk with the mayor, fail out, and you too can be successful! This administration is revolting.

Anonymous said...

If it's a "National Festival", wouldn't they already have a National manager who runs the festival wherever it goes each year. They may need a local person to help that National manager, but it shouldn't take a full time local employee to do this job. They don't even need to hire a person for a regular city position, just a contract for this particular festival and then you're done would work.

Anonymous said...

I can't believe everyone on here is more worried about how well they know music festivals. Who cares about a folk/music festival if this is what the mayor of Salisbury is worried about, then he needs to get his head out of his ass because if that is important than this town has more problems than we think. That is Very Immature Mayor Day. I Believe there are more serious problems to worry about than a "Folk Festival".It's Sad When the Mayor is more worried about the "Decor" of the town and a Festival than what the real needs of the town are. Glad I don't live in Salisbury!

Anonymous said...

Artist riders? This is a folk festival, not a big name rock or pop festival.

Anonymous said...

geezus.

Memo looks like it was written by a child. It's "costs" not cost. The "costs" are based....

What a cluster Salisbury govt is.

Congratulations. Great job voters.

Anonymous said...

Subject of Memo - National FOLD Festival Manager. These are the dumbest bunch of clowns I've ever seen. Does NO ONE proof read or learn proper English at SU?

Anonymous said...

Guess he can afford to since he is getting over on the county getting more money for fire service

Anonymous said...

dammit. that damn pic of that idiotic smiling fool keeps offending my sensitivities. shove him into a closet or something

Anonymous said...

Way to Jake day you young man absolutely confirm everyone's criticism about just how dumb you really are. Cutting police budgets when the city you were entrusted to lead has been constantly exposed to violent crime and drug saturation. So please please do tell which of the two construction buddies businesses will you "AWARD"?? the bid to build this amphitheater in the homeless outdoor shelter called downtown Salisbury. Will it be gilliss gilkerson or Jaime gladden?? People one if the these guaranteed will be the beneficiary of your tax dollars at work again

Anonymous said...

Who is he going to 'appropriate' the money from to fund the Fire, EMS, and PD overtime and other numerous resources they will need for this festival?

I have been involved in corporate entertainment for decades... Folk acts can have riders just as exquisite as a top act. Why? Because they can. There are a limited number of large scale folk acts and they know they can get what they want because there isn't as much to choose from.

He is way over his head. I can't think of a single legitimate person who would touch that job for the pay they are offering.

Anonymous said...

814 there's no way I'd touch it and I've worked on many festival events throughout the years. I'd want a base plus 10 points (that's 30% in real world figures) of all proceeds - gross receipts of course. There's no way they'd ever be able to afford a pro to do this gig. They're just puffing the magic dragon!

Anonymous said...

Oh and 814, I'd want my own bean counter and head clicker at the door and going through the books. Don't trust the Jakester as far as I could spit him. He's damaged goods.

Anonymous said...

8:16 PM glad to hear you aren't interested in it. Give it to someone who would be happy with the job. No one gives a % on gross receipts. You are living in lala land baby.

Anonymous said...

Funny 821, that's exactly what I got for the last twelve festivals I've done and they ran like a well-oiled clock. You're the one who lives in lala land, asshole.

Anonymous said...

Oh and 821, let me know how the lawsuits work out when you don't have the appropriate insurance or the thing turns into a cluster f**k because you're "happy to have the job" person doesn't know what the hell they're doing. Have fun, idiot!

Anonymous said...

Who supply the steel for this new amphitheater now that the steel company has hit the road? Didn't think about that one, did ya Jake?

Anonymous said...

Does the mayor understand that everyone who works on these big shows is big union? Grips, lighting, sound, etc. And unions like their guarantees up front, in cash. No credit extended? Three-day events with double overtime gets pretty pricey. What's the ticket price? $150-200 a pop? For Salisbury? ROTFLMAO!

Anonymous said...

About all the mayor can do is grant a permit. What's he going to do about all the other things involved? Riders can be tricky tricky. Some bands want crap you can only get from Trader Joe's, Whole Foods or Harris Teeter. They going to do a barn run to beach, Easton, Annapolis to fetch... Ruff-ruff.

Anonymous said...

I have an attitude because I EARNED my attitude through working hard and building a list of successful events a mile long. Wouldn't take this gig if he did answer all my demands because wouldn't want my name attached to this sham of a backyard production. Once the folks at headquarters sees the disaster either coming or one year, they'll probably give the gig to another city. One that doesn't lie to them about their demos and ability to accommodate such a festival.

Anonymous said...

If it's free and the mayor didn't take a cut of all merch that comes with it from vendors then he's a bigger douche bag and financially inept. LOL! Gotta love the sticks!

Anonymous said...

Crap, 836, the mayor doesn't know about merch sales cuts or any of that noise. He's a fruit loop. He probably thinks all the crews will be paid with love beads. It's funny to see novice try to make a horse's race of this. It's hilarious he's cutting the budget of the very people he'll need to pull this show off. Oops!

Anonymous said...

Don't be so hard on him 840, maybe has a copy of This Business of Music from 1988 he's working from. He'll know it all if he gets through that book. (snicker)

Will you folks be smarter next election by finding a candidate that meets your approval, who will willingly run against the establishment, and then go to the polls and vote.

Some of you fools did not vote in the last election, Some of you do not live in Salisbury. The only way ofsome you are aware that Jake made promises is through SBYNews, (but since many comments start with "I heard" or My wife's 3rd cousin's friend's Father told me" I believe some of these "Jake Promises" could be fiction). You Cool Fools expect the Mayor to run your city by your rules, when you did zilch to keep him out of Office. In fact your non participation and non voting put Jake in office. My observations tell me Jake is doing his Mayor duties exactly as the ones who voted him in office wants him to.

It is none of my concern actually as I do no live in Salisbury, I live in DE, as does the owner of this blog

Anonymous said...

Oh come on 840 and 843. Maybe he'll get the group that overpaid Neon Trees at SU a few years back. They got 3X their normal guarantee and only had to do a one-off from Baltimore to get it. The show was free to students but the Student Union was practically forcing tickets on people because they didn't even hand out half of them until an hour before the show was supposed to begin. Those kids will help Jake out.

Anonymous said...

Well now there's a real observation - I give you a two thumbs down for it has diddly squat to do with the subject of Joe's posting

These things belong to the private sector...where their absence speaks volumes. IE...if it was practical and profitable it would have already been done.

You want to a vibrant city Mr. Mayor? First, provide a safe environment.
Second, provide incentives for private investment such as lower/abatement of taxes, and favorable zoning.
Third, hire an all star economic development czar and give them the monetary tools needed for success.
Fourth, start playing small ball and put some runs on the board. Recovery is secured over the long term so stop swinging for the fences...it looks desperate.

Salisbury can still be the hub of delmarva...but you need to start with repairing the spokes of your wheel.

All of us benefit from a successful Salisbury. Now drive on and stop playing around!

Anonymous said...

Whose idea was this folk festival? Did they do market research and figure that folks here WANT a folk festival? Or was this another idea by the elites of our city, who all listen to the crappy music on NPR, getting together and thinking this would be good>

Anonymous said...

It must be HAPPENING!!!, right Jakie?

Cutting public safety for a festival, wow that's a boneheaded idea. More drunks, drugs, bars and section 8 housing in downtown. Boy you are a great leader. NOT ! This guy is leading Slumsbury right down the sewer. What a clown show Salisbury has become. But what do you expect from a yuppie spoiled brat, Facebook posting selfies and tweeting all the time. What a loser.

Anonymous said...

If this festival goes off the first year, doubt it will be reupped after the promoters see what Salisbury is all about. They were the ones who dropped the ball because they believed the BS Day and his buddies fed them without investigating the area or its services (lack thereof) to accommodate this type of event.

Anonymous said...

Difference is the Mayor of Woodstock didn't slash his budget for citizen protection to host the party. Jake Days stupidity at this point is bordering on criminal.

Anonymous said...

Does Bethlehem, PA have a lying little boy for Mayor? Taxpayers funded the lost tax revenue and upkeep of that Firehall for years before the city GAVE IT AWAY to their best friends at Gill-Gilk. The excuse was that an entertainment venue was needed in downtown. This building could not have held more than a couple hundred people AND THEY COULDNT EVEN KEEP THAT IN BUSINESS!!! Now we are going to allow them to waste more money because they promise that hundreds of thousands will show up.
Mark my words you may have 1000 out of towners and the rest will be from within the three lower counties. I bet no more than 3000 people will come to this and the taxpayer will eat it, like they do with all of Jake's plans.
