Most Marylanders support change to antiquated alcohol laws

An overwhelming majority of Marylanders support fundamental changes to the state’s alcohol laws that govern the production, distribution and sale of beer, according to the results of an online survey released today by Comptroller Peter Franchot.

“Maryland’s current beer laws are dysfunctional and outdated and work to the detriment of consumers and small business,” said Comptroller Franchot in response to the unscientific survey. “Without comprehensive reform, Maryland’s reputation within the national craft brewing industry will continue to suffer. We must have laws that make sense for all the stakeholders and promote economic growth for all three tiers and create the best market for Maryland consumers.”

This past spring, the Comptroller announced the formation of a Reform on Tap Task Force to do a comprehensive review of the state’s antiquated laws governing the manufacturing, distribution and sale of Maryland craft beer. Forty task force members, representing every region of the state from large and small breweries, distributors, restaurants, bars and retailers, consumers and local and state officials have been meeting regularly to discuss issues affecting the industry. As a result of the meetings, an online poll was taken live from August 7 to 11. During that time, 2,472 respondents completed the survey. Below are the questions and the results:

Laws about beer/alcohol? Beer laws? THAT'S what Marylanders are concerned with?! Maybe it helps with their views and opinions go down better?

How about ditching Marty O'Morons alcohol tax?!

Laws which prohibit or impede the legal use of anything that is legal are designed to legislate behavior which in turn diminishes your constitutional rights. Less government more freedom is always a best tract. People are more likely to self regulate if not restrained.

Other things need to addressed there Pete. Rather than you trying to tell us what YOU think is better about alcohol for consumers. Your ideas includes a revenue generator, never something beneficial to me!

Delaware continues to get my business when I purchase spirits and there is NOTHING you can do about it! EVER!

741 you are so powerful! Oh lets hear you roar! Give us a good one!

why just craft beers? they way this state allows just 2 companies to be the wholesale distributor for every bottle of alcohol or wine that passes through here is total BS! but then again it's easier for the politicians to only have to ask two families to donate to them! total BS!

Outlaw cold beer sales and just watch how drunk driving incidents disappear.

Propaganda. The state's press release telling you what you like. Sinister.

There are lots of companies that distribute alcohol in this state. There just happens to be 3 larger ones and that is because they are who the suppliers have chosen to distribute their products in this state

At least HE said something. You? Whimper about what someone else said without offering anything other than criticism. Anyone impressed?

Can't buy beer till such and such a time on Sunday morning. Pain in the rear when you're going fishing at 4:00 am.

Maryland is as backwards as VA and PA when it comes to buying alcohol. You can buy liquor in Sam's club/Costco/grocery stores in many states. No county stores controlled with jacked up prices.

8:46 makes a great point. Awful lot of chest thumping and swingin' it around on this and other sites. Amusing, actually.

No 12:21. What's sad is moralizind about someone's taste for beer when our damn constitutional republic is under threat. And I'm not talking about making me sad. It makes me mad.

If you say so. Oh, but you already did didn't you? lol.

But yeah, a lot of alpha males come on here and try to be dominant. And yes, they can be amusing. Just give them enough rope, step back and watch.
