Worcester Denies Naloxone Kits For Prisoners When Released

SNOW HILL – Inmates with a history of heroin abuse will not be provided with naloxone kits upon their release from jail following a decision by county officials this week.

On Tuesday, the Worcester County Commissioners voted 6-0 not to support an initiative that would have provided at-risk inmates with naloxone kits as they were released from Worcester County Jail. Several commissioners expressed concern about the proposal.

“To me this is sending the wrong message,” Commissioner Joe Mitrecic said. “It really doesn’t make sense.”

Worcester County Health Officer Rebecca Jones approached the commissioners Tuesday seeking approval of a memorandum of understanding between the health department and the Worcester County Jail that would have allowed for the distribution of naloxone kits to inmates. Naloxone is a medication used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

I cant believe this was even up for discussion! The ones that want to be fixed will be fixed, the ones that just want attention and a pity party will die from their choices.

9:44 I agree

It sends the exact correct message - don't do drugs - we won't help you any more!

A good decision. The only thing Narcan has accomplished is giving addicts a false sense of security. Officials are being called time and time again to the same people. Let them live with the very real consequences of an overdose death and maybe that will be a wake up call for some.

I am so glad for this decision. Smart move.

Let mother nature or Darwin take it's course.

That Dumb @$$ Hogan wants to spend money on these criminals. He is bucking for votes at the tax payers expense.

Look at all the money he is throwing at the "opioid mess."

Look at all money he is throwing at the crime problem in Baltimore City.

Look at all the money he is throwing at the Baltimore City schools.

Look at all the money he is wasting on Democrats and Democrat problems.

He is throwing Millions upon Millions of dollars at the Democrats and they will NOT vote for him regardless!!

He has been in office for 2 1/2 years and what has he done for the Republicans that put him in office.

What has he done to reverse the bad gun legislation that the Republicans put him in office to work on. NOTHING!!

Larry Hogan is a Damn RINO and he won't be getting my vote again.

I applaud the WorCoComms for their decision.

The ignorance demonstrated by the above posts never cease to amaze me. Tell me, since when does incarcerating an individual with the disease of drug addiction cure the disease? What treatment does an inmate receive for their illness? The answers are it doesn't and none.

That's because addiction is a choice and NOT a disease. I'm so tired of you bleeding hearts that would rather enable these weaklings.
Cancer is a disease. Addition is an excuse to avoid reality. Period.

1:04 you have your opinion and the right to express it. It tells me one of two things and / or both and that is you are one of those users or you know nothing about what is offered in the correctional system. They are given the right for rehabilitation if they want it. They don't want it then they should not expect the tax payer to support them and their habits. That is their choice in life and they have to deal with it own their own.

1:04. Addiction is NOT a disease. Don't be ridiculous. It's attitudes like yours that enables drug users to continue with their bad decisions and destructive behavior. You enablers are a very big part of the problem. Too stupid to see the truth and the facts. There is big money huge money in so called "recovery." They don't want people to get off drugs-do you understand. It is their livelihood "treating" addicts. And the fools like yourself who fall for the BS are only adding to the problem. Fact is treatment centers that refuse to call addiction a disease and treat it as it really is-a choice have a much much higher success rate. The ones that lie and call it a disease have a dismal failure rate which is what they want. No clients no money.

I agree with the commissioners. When you make the choice to try a highly addictive drug then you must live with the consequences including possibly dying.

Addiction IS a disease, ignorance however is a choice. All those that state addiction is a choice are ignorant by choice. Open a book, read the science, study the evidence, use a dictionary and take your head out of the sand. It is people like you that propagate the stigma of addiction that keeps millions of those that SUFFER from the disease from seeking the treatment they need. You call me a FOOL. What do you know about me? What are you doing to help solve the problem? You cite false information about treatment centers as though you are educated on the topic. Tell us your credentials. Cite your evidence. I however have a medical degree, study addiction medicine and actively treat substance use disorders. I sit down daily with those with this illness. They are sons, daughters, parents, students, teachers, blue and white collar workers including lawyers and doctors. I know them personally and have yet to meet anyone that decided by choice to become physically and psychologically addicted to a substance that ultimately destroys every sphere of their life just before it takes their life. And you, what do you do?

When you make the decision to smoke you should live with the consequences of cancer. When you don't exercise and eat poorly you should live with the consequence of heart disease and diabetes. When you walk in the woods and don't protect yourself from ticks you should live with the consequences of Lyme disease. When you don't wear sun screen you should live with the consequence of melanoma, etc, etc. Hell, by your logic I believe we just solved the health care problem in this country. Congress can go home now. Nobody should be treated for any illness -- they all deserve to suffer and die! Brilliant!

8:52 You are right when you choose to smoke, you should live with it, when you choose not to wear sunscreen you should live with it etc. However you can eat healthy and work out and still inherit Heart Disease and Diabetes from Family therefore it would not be a choice. Drug Addiction started with a a choice! Very Poor Choice! Educate your children that Drugs will kill them, at a young age make them fear it worse than the Devil himself and these issues will decrease themselves!! For the people now, unfortunately they have to live, (or Die), by the bad choices they made. We should not be spending and spending to fix something un-fixable!

Sorry, wrong again. You inherit the genetic predisposition for heart disease and diabetes. You do not inherit the disease. The disease becomes manifest when you have an environmental exposure or behavior that triggers that inherent risk. Everything we do is by choice. There is always personal responsibility however addiction is not a choice. I have sat with parents that have lost children from a drug overdose. Your advice is I should tell them they deserved to die because they made a bad choice. Amazing. Please tell us how you do it, how every choice you make is the right one.

I'm not wrong again! I'm also glad Worcester county got this right! It also appears the majority of people would agree with this decision so deal with it! Go help the next OD

Your not wrong? Explain how you are not wrong. I'm still waiting for you to cite your credentials that make you an expert on this topic. Also, what majority are you referring to? Don't bother answering, I know your kind. I'm beginning to believe I have entered a pissing contest with a skunk. I can smell your BS a mile away.
