Survey Says: 87% Of Us Think Auto Makers Should Improve Fuel Economy

You may really like cars, or driving, but if you’re like most people you probably don’t actually enjoy buying or pumping gas. It’s expensive, tedious, smelly, and flammable, and a new survey finds that a vast majority of us would prefer if our cars could be more efficient so we wouldn’t have to fill ’em up as often.

Then why do so many people buy big SUVs?

But then your government tax mongers would just increase the taxes accordingly. fuel would be 1.50 p/gal without tax...much cheaper still had they not mandated ethanol {which causes far less mileage per gal and dose nothing to improve pollution. The greedy tax mongers, liars and cheats must be voted OUT!

If the automakers were all that dedicated to fuel economy, they would stop manufacturing so many SUVs. Until they do that, they are just full of crap. They say this feel-good BS to make themselves appear to give a hoot about the environment but we all know that's libspeak with no validity whatsoever.

Correction:

Survey says: 87% of us have been brainwashed by goverment propaganda into believing that auto makers should improve fuel economy.

The survey was done by Consumer union and was likely from its reader base. Hardly a valid survey.

Read the actual results and see that people want their SUVs but want better gas mileage too.

Well I want my car to be able to seat 8 comfortably go zero to 60 in 3.5 seconds and get 100MPG.

Ship 10s of thousands of vehicles a day by planes, trains, trucks and ships to America. Close all plants out of country reopen in American. Less of a carbon foot print and it helps everyone in the USA.

fuel would be under a dollar a gallon if the government wasnt raping the industry and the citizens for the tax monies. Just taking the tax off at the pump would make it 1.25....when will people learn to stop voting in greedy crooks to destroy this state and country.

If you all really believe that the mpg we're living with now is the very best we can do then with respect, you're delusional. In 1979 I had a Datsun (Nissan for those not old enough to remember Datsun) saloon that got on average 40mpg. Are we really expected to believe that 38 years later with all the advances in engineering were still being sold vehicles that, on average, get the same kind of mileage? I call BS on that one. More likely it's a pact between the auto manufacturers and big oil. Let's say a car maker develops a vehicle capable of 100mpg...you really believe big oil are going to be happy about that?
As for the all electric car..well given that most electricity that you charge that vehicle with is unfortunately still produces using some form of non-renewable resource, you're burning fossil fuel either way. You're only patting yourself on the back because you're not producing any emissions when you drive...but those same emissions were released while generating the electricity used to charge your "feel good" vehicle.

The technology exists, but Big Oil, car manufacturers and government want to keep the profits and the taxes flowing. Selling half the gas means half the profits and taking in half the state and federal taxes.

87% eh? Well then, I'm part of the 13% who think the auto industry MUST MUST MUST improve fuel economy.

Geez Louise, the technology is there however it would crush the economy. We know how to run engines on steam (prior to electronics) - we CAN do the same with vehicles.

Anyway - wishful thinking on a topic that's brought up every single year.

HAPPY JULY everyone!

9:25 you are correct on the technology existing. In 1957 Ford had a 4bbl carburetor on the 352 ci v8 that got 52 mpg. These engines were in the Fairlane 500. They screwed up and allowed 6 to be sold to the public and had to buy them back. They stated these vehicles had severe safety problems.

It's not the mpg that is problematic, it is the price at the pump. The manufacturer can turn out just about anything needed to get better mpg. It was said a few years back they had carburetors that gave much better mileage but the great government would not approve it. The same great government has a say at the pump with taxes. It is our great leaders that have us bedded down in taxes and regulations.
