Ocean City Approves Inlet Parking Lot Changes To Address Congestion Issues; Free Roam Time Cut To 20 Minutes

OCEAN CITY — A clearly divided Mayor and Council this week approved reducing the grace period for free parking at the Inlet parking lot from the current 30 minutes to 20 minutes in the interest of reducing congestion times at the popular parking area.

During last week’s Transportation Committee meeting, officials voted to adjust the paid parking structure at the Inlet lot to 20-minute increments in an effort to reduce the need for coin change and keep the line of vehicles attempting to leave the lot at certain busy times. The intent is to adjust the fee schedule at the Inlet lot in order to make the increments come out rounded to the whole dollar, eliminating the need for coin change and thereby speeding up the transaction times.

Under the proposed adjustments, the first 20 minutes would be free, 21 minutes to 40 minutes would cost $1, 41 minutes to 60 minutes would cost $3 and each additional 20-minute period would cost another $1. The handicap fee schedule would be adjusted in kind with a 60-minute free grace period, with a $5 fee for 61 to 100 minutes and $6 for 101 to 120 minutes.

Just finding new ways to rip people off!
Quit going there in the summer years ago.
Many other beach resorts in the south that are much much better and offer free parking. The hell with OC!

All about the Benjamins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- have an issue, throw money at it.
- Why?
- because you can and no one will say NO!

Fatten frogs for snakes - that is until the frog brings a hatchet and cuts the snake's head off.

Don't think that can happen? Anything is possible in this day/age, hell just look at what the last 8 YEARS has gotten us!!!!!

Keep it tiny-time OC, eventually you'll wonder why everyone upped and left for the north (Delaware Beaches) and south (VA and NC beaches).

OC is a rule by committee town. They pay good money to hire experts and then get a bunch of ex Real Estate people to band together to make up new rules. When those rules fail, they'll blame and fire the person they hired. Look how long they screwed around buses and transportation.

You guys are being silly and CHEAP. If you're paying $20 for a bucket of fries at Thrashers, is the extra $3 to hang out in the parking lot gonna matter that much? Then stay in the 'bury and go to McDonald's!!

Pricing themselves into the poorhouse then as usual will hike taxes for the shortfall.

Your wrong, I can take that three dollars with the gas, and go to a Virginia or Delaware beach! If your stupid enough to accept these fees, go for it! I for one will go where the crowds are less and I can make my own damn french fries. Just peanut oil and russet potatoes.

If you're at the far end of the lot, you can't walk up to Thrasher's, stand in line and get back to your car in that small amount of time! What a ripoff for people that are there supporting the local economy. It might not affect vacationers who are parked at their hotel.

so the price at thrashers has doubled to $20 a bucket, hmmm wonder when that happened

Boardwalk viewing/walking use permits are going to be sold for $5 per day.
10 sq. feet of beach will be rented to you and a family of 4 for just $10 per half day.
A Lifeguard supervision fee, ($5) will be added onto the beach rent fee for all users. If you actually require a rescue, the charge will be $100.

Welcome to Ocean City, leave your footprints and your cash!

One dollars for 20 minutes...if you go to the beach and boards and spend five hours there that's 15.00. Really do they want people to visit the inlet or ride around and park somewhere free and block up the streets and parking lots. Alot of people park at foodlion on 120th and walk to the beach or ride bus to the inlet. If people are patronizing the inlet buisnesses and your town..cut them a break on parking.I can see on sat and sun..but mon -fri..cut the rate.

A week at OC now costs as much, or more, than a week at Disneyland. What's the better value? This is the straw that breaks the camel's back, for me. There is no reason for me to cross the rt 50, or rt 90 bridge for anything, much less for riding into a traffic jam and spending an hour looking for a overpriced place to park, just for the privilege of spending too much money on things we just don't need. As for the beach, I've reached that "golden age" that allows me free access, for the rest of my life, to all MD state parks and the Federal Parks. They have fine beaches, no fees, plenty of parking, and far less people. Yep, I'm done with OC. They won't miss me though, but the satisfaction will be all mine.

that place can keep all their $8 beers and $10 dollar cover charges, I'll go see vizzard at cheers and stay home away from the freak show

THEY ARE SO GREEDY!!!!

OC Council spending more money every year and raising the prices on parking and other city services with hopes of paying for it.

so, if my math is correct, it costs more for a disabled person to park for two hours than a non-disabled person?

617 BINGO!!!!!!!!

Wait and watch when our disabled community comes to open "mike" time in City Hall.

Park and Ride parking is free. Cheaper for all day bus ticket than to go to inlet.

I really hope their stupid lot stays empty most of the time.

Finally, 7:42 states the voice of reason.
The object here (along with making money, of course) is to make the option of taking advantage of the town's offer free parking and transportation to and from the most congested parts of town.
You want a front row seat? You pay a premium. You want to park directly on the beach? You pay a premium.
My only gripe is that no visionary has come forward to offer a Personal Rapid Transit System for Ocean City. It should've been done decades ago. (See University of West Virginia's unique "PRT" system, which has been in place for 40 years!)
Not only would it have solved the traffic problem, but it would've created something that vacationers would enjoy seeing and using - sort of like the monorail at Disney.
To all the 'haters' of OC: The reason for this parking increase is because OC is so wildly popular, no matter what you say.
As Yogi Berra once famously stated: "Nobody goes there anymore - it's too crowded."

Jerseyites, Baltimorons, etc. "Down the ocean hon". Hope they raise the rates on everything.
