Berlin Mayor Breaks Split Council Vote Giving Dollar General Free Utility Connection

BERLIN – After a heated discussion and a split vote, town officials agreed to cover the water and sewer infrastructure fees for the Dollar General being built on Decatur Street.

Mayor Gee Williams provided the tie-breaking vote Monday after the council initially voted 2-2 on a contract to have the town pay the $24,700 water and sewer connection fee for the new Dollar General. Town council members Thom Gulyas and Lisa Hall voted against the agreement, citing concerns about setting a precedent.

“It’s a slippery slope,” Gulyas said.

The contract, presented as one of several the council was to consider at Monday night’s meeting, came as a result of the town’s sale of the property at the corner of Decatur Street to Oxford Chase Development, the company building the new Dollar General.

$24,000.00 to a multi million dollar corporation, but none you and me?

And the next time someone asks for free hookups? Well, the precedent has been set, so what's the answer, a free hookup or a lawsuit?

Gee Willakers! Totally stupid decision Gee. Why don't YOU give them $24,000.00 instead of the town? Let me guess, voted for Bernie...

Claude you have no idea what you are talking about. You should be glad those chicken companies are there to pay your salary or you would be out of a job again.

2:53 PM are you the same Claude Holland that got fired for the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office? Your name sounds familiar?

Kathy Phillips didn't you already lose the law suit against Perdue Farms and the Hudson Farm? Don't you have anything better to do? Why don't you call Jim Ireton and take a hike over to Rehoboth Beach.

These slimy, underhanded, back room dealing, bribe taking, alcoholic bumpkins spend OUR money like that and think its OK???
A $24,000 dollar gift of OUR MONEY to a corporation that is already wealthy??
Make sure YOU pay your property tax. The same people who give your money away will sell your house for the $1200 you owe. WHO are they really representing? Hint: It ain't you or me.
I can't see your reasoning for it, but go ahead.
Keep cheering!

If a company as large as this wants to come here to make money than they have to pay just like the rest of us. Enough with the tax payers footing the bill so a corporation can make money.

Kathy Phillips, Maria Payan, Gabby and Claude Holland are 4 slimy people doing their best to put the poultry industry out of business.

If you don't like chickens then GTHO of here. Maria doesn't even live here, but but she is paid to be here and recruit stupid people like Claude and Gabby to agitate their neighbors.

Yes I know that Claude Holland. He has some serious issues. It's more than just hating farmers with chicken houses.

I was at one of the county council meetings when Mr. Holland was there and he was walking back and forth to the podium. It looked like he was getting ready to explode. I haven't been back because that guy scares me.
