Lewes, Rehoboth, Millville and Millsboro Food Lion stores to become Weis

Food Lion stores in Lewes, Rehoboth, Millsboro and Millville are being sold to Pennsylvania-based grocer Weis Markets.

Delhaize Group, parent company of Giant, and Ahold, parent company of Food Lion, announced June 13 that their United States subsidiaries have reached agreements with buyers to sell 86 stores in a limited number of locations where the companies’ U.S. subsidiaries both operate. These divestments are being made in connection with the United States Federal Trade Commission’s pending review of the proposed merger between the two companies. The divested stores are being sold to well-established supermarket operators.

Weis expects to complete the conversion process for the majority of the stores in September and October and is interested in hiring current Food Lion store teams for the purchased locations.

“This transaction provides us the opportunity to expand into markets that are contiguous to our current trade area, particularly in Maryland where we are adding 21 stores, essentially doubling our store count in a state where we have steadily grown in recent years,” said Weis Markets Chairman, President and CEO Jonathan Weis. “We’re also looking forward to expanding our operations into two adjacent states with the addition of 13 stores in Virginia and four in Delaware.”

So when is Salisbury going to get something like this? All we have is Food Lion and Giant!!! I have to drive to Easton just to shop at Acme or Safeway, or once a month to Annapolis for Trader Joes!!!!!
We desperately need more choice here in Salisbury!!!!
Tired of Food Lion, and Giant sells the same old stuff at inflated prices!!!!

@9:20, we also have Save-a-lot and WalMart in Salisbury. I do agree with you, it would be nice to have a store like this. :-)

Giant is supposed to change ownership due to this monopoly issue as well (foodlion and giant are owned by same company)l. Any idea who will be replacing Giant? And when?

Be glad you don't live in west ocean city. All we have is food lion and it is horrible. You can see the tourists jaws drop when they see the poor selection at the deli and the whole store in general. Not to mention it takes forever to get deli meat. I have to drive to Giant in Salisbury or Harris Teeter in Selbyville for good selection and quality produce, meats and bakery.

10:30-where did you hear Albertsons? We were told today Acme had bought it.

Several sources report Albertson's out of Boise, ID and owner of both Safeway and Acme (former Salisbury stores) has offered to purchase the Salisbury Giant. Opportunity to still shop in that location.

I'm hoping Giant will become a Safeway.

11:03 & 11:18 - Albertson's owns both Acme & Safeway. Because there is no Albertson's may brand the store with either name as there are operations for each in place.

Save a Lot is where Homer Simpson shops.

@2:43, haven't seen him in the Salisbury store, I'm happy to say. LOL

Save a Lot is in a bad area of Salisbury. I don't go there even though the police headquarters are in back of them. Have been to the store in Cambridge. Not impressed. Reminds me of the old Colonial Supermarkets in the Seventies.

Forget the names folks., what you are seeing here is global interests controlling our food supply. The behemoth mergers, of any commodities or essential service corps., is not good for America. Growth, while at one time was good, has gotten out of control. It is the one crack that I see in the 'free enterprise' system.

@3:40, I go to save a lot and have never encountered a problem. Plus it's cheaper than other grocery stores. When you have to pinch pennies, every little bit helps!
