Maryland’s Minimum Wage to Rise 50 Cents to $8.75

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland’s minimum wage and the state’s gas tax are going up. Here’s a look at some new laws that take effect Friday.

MINIMUM WAGE

Maryland’s minimum wage will rise from $8.25 to $8.75. It’s the latest bump scheduled to take effect since lawmakers in 2014 approved increases over several years from $7.25. It is scheduled to go up to $9.25 next year and reach $10.10 in July 2018.

GAS TAX

The state’s gas tax will rise nine-tenths of a cent to 33.5 cents. Lawmakers approved several increases in 2013, with regular hikes to adjust for inflation. The state’s gas tax has gone up a dime since 2013, when lawmakers approved the first increase in 20 years from 23.5 cents.

RETIREMENT PLANS

A state-sponsored retirement savings plan goes into effect. IRAs will be created for private-sector employees without access to a workplace savings program with their employer. Employees would need to make the contributions and can opt out of the program. The law applies to employers using an automated payroll system who don’t already offer a retirement program.

The minimum wage law and gas tax increase didn't happen under hogan administration, it happened under Omalley administration. He sees why veto it when all they will do is override it.. like what's the point. He still has my vote. and also we are as a STATE still creating jobs when wage increases. #DEMSFORHOGAN

From 23.5 to 33.5 cents in taxes on gas? Now take that tax away from the current price. Now you see why gas still continues to rally even as the barrier plummets.

And does any of this tax money go to roads? Last I saw (last night) the roads still suck.

This is what communism looks like.
Amerikans simply don't want to accept the truth.
We are now communists and we love it.
Large portions of the population do not work and do not intend to work.
Small portions of the people work to maintain a lifestyle which belonged to a distant past.

228 you're exactly correct. It is what communism looks like! And some Amoricans (spelling on purpose) don't seem to get that through their thick heads. This continuance of a policy that does nothing but kill small business and dissuades hiring is lunacy. It's stark-raving MAD! Keep going for the feel-good messaging that makes people vote for momentary happiness while screwing their futures!

Democrats taking advantage of the low wage worker once again...Increasing the minimum wage moves them into a higher tax bracket which means more money for government and less take home for the worker.

You people keep joking while business in Fenwick explodes. Ocean city, you'll pay 7% tax for your food and 9% on your adult beverage bill. For $3, you can purchase an Ocean City bus ticket that takes you within blocks o fTAX FREE Fenwick Island where you can purchase steamed crabs and anything else available in Ocean City TAX FREE. YES, you can book into a tax free motel room there too but space is limited.

You people have your screws loose. many Successful businesses have been paying more than 8.75 start for years. there are also successful business that cheat by paying cash. Of course that is not helping the employee in the long run.

I hate the gas tax but it has not been raised for 20 years. We all want our roads fixed and improved I can hardly wait to drive the dual between Berlin and Snow Hill. Hogan promised to get it finished after all these years.

We have to have government and we have to pay in. Without it we would have only chaos. And no I am not one of your hated government officials, I am a small business person, so you can stop that stupid guessing about which official wrote this.

I'm not that upset about the gasoline tax since non-MD'ers (PA, OH, VA, DC, etc) pay too. Still and will always buy my spirits in DE and smokes in VA. Our taxes in MD (with minimum to show for it here on the shore) are ridiculous. I hear Montgomery County MD has extra/extra taxes on top of what MD already has.

Any questions about where the $$$ goes show be addressed to the MD Comptroller! Hey Pete - what say you?

Democrats still rule in Annapolis. Increase of minimum wage mainly hurts small businesses which are the lifeblood of our economy.

Government, any government, is the ruling elite who force us to pay them to control us.
