Baltimore City officials defend trip to Las Vegas

BALTIMORE —Baltimore city officials are expected to approve taxpayer money Wednesday to send City Council President Jack Young and council member Carl Stokes to a big convention in Las Vegas in May.

But Stokes is leaving the council and the trip isn't cheap, so is it a good deal?

Travel expenses by Baltimore's City Council more than quadrupled in recent years. The cost of the trip is more than $10,000.

The convention is put on by the International Council of Shopping Centers. As its promotion video suggests, it is a big deal and a popular destination for politicians.

This year's Baltimore delegation includes Young, two of his aides and Stokes.

It might be worth it if it's a one way ticket.

No rationale presented to suggest why he's going.

A drop in the bucket compared to what the IRS was spending there.

Baltimore needs some new shopping centers to replace the ones burned down in the riots. also the fine citizens need new places to loot when the next good riot occurs. don't forget to give them space

Stokes may be moving on from council, but dollars to donuts he'll be working for the city as a paid consultant. Maybe something to do with retail development? As in shopping centers, maybe?

Been to Vegas. Grandson lives there. It doesn't cost 10 thou to spend 2 weeks there. It's one of the cheapest places you can visit. If you're a gambler, it goes without saying, that money doesn't count as an expense.
