In A High-Rent World, Affordable And Safe Housing Is Hard To Come By

LaToya Fowlkes is standing outside rent court in Baltimore. A judge has just ruled that Fowlkes has to pay her landlord $4,900 in rent and fees despite her complaints that the house has leaky water pipes, chipped paint, rodents and a huge hole in the living room wall.

But Fowlkes didn't notify her landlord of the problems by certified mail — something the judge said she should have done to avoid eviction.

"It's hard for tenants, because tenants don't know the law. And then you have these landlords that just go and buy agents, and agents just sit there and study it," she says. "So they just know a lot of stuff, they know how to get around, they know how to work the judge over and that's not fair."

This dilemma is not limited to any one sex or race and I wish these "investigative" stories would acknowledge that fact.It happens to white people, single people, people with no kids and married couples and its because,to borrow a phrase, the rent is too damn high! Salisbury is full of "luxury apartments" that not only cost a small fortune to rent but too many people are crammed into one building, which is undesirable for some renters. You can no longer afford to rent a halfway decent detached house in a nice neighborhood. Its a combo of demand for student rentals AND Section 8 subsidized housing that drives the market out of reach for working class people.
It's also painfully evident that some property owners actually think that the run-down dirty rentals they offer are "nice".I recently looked at a house for rent for the first time in a while and I was disgusted to find the hot water heater was in the corner of the living room, closed in by cheap fencing panels.and the whole decor just outdated horribly.Drop ceilings with various nicotine and grease stains, cracked or broken outlet plates, etc, etc.People should be ashamed.Affordable housing should not mean dirty and neglected housing.
Golden Rule: NEVER rent from any landlord who makes their own repairs. They are not skilled ,they are just cheapskates who think they can learn plumbing from Youtube!

Rent in Salisbury and surrounding areas is ridiculously high. Charging what these landlords charge should be regulated. If you can't pay for decent housing then you are stuck in the not so desirable neighborhoods. One day these mayors, governors, council members will wake up and do something about it. Families can not afford decent housing, make too much for any assistance. It seems to go back that the working class get the screws. Maryland is a greedy, taxing state with no regulations for the working class.
