Worcester Schools Again To Head Back After Labor Day

NEWARK – School system officials again approved a calendar with a post-Labor Day start date for the coming school year.

On Tuesday the Worcester County Board of Education voted unanimously to approve a 2016-2017 calendar that features a first day of school on Sept. 6 and a final day of school on June 16.

The chosen calendar proposal was the same one favored by the majority of those who participated in the school system’s annual calendar survey.

“Results from the survey indicate a clear majority of respondents prefer the post-Labor Day mediators’ calendar,” said Carrie Sterrs, the school system’s coordinator of public relations and special programs.

As in years past, a committee of teachers, administrators, parents and students developed three calendar options for the school community to consider. The 27-member committee was broken into three subcommittees, each of which was tasked with creating a different type of calendar. One group developed a moderate calendar that would start school before Labor Day, while another, the “post-Labor-Day mediators” group, came up with a plan that would include moderate holidays and a start date after Labor Day.

“The mediators sought to strike a balance,” Sterrs said.

Meanwhile, back in Wicomico County....

I am a teacher in Wicomico County and I think school should be from after labor day to memorial day. Teachers could do their in services and professional development during the summer. If they don't want to in the summer it could be done at night during the school year. Oh wait, there's a liberal hillary supporting union in the way.

Have the powers that be even come up with a proposed calendar for next year yet?

I'm a teacher in Wicomico and I agree. I would not mind professional development days in the summer. The teachers union does get in our way. I really don't see what they do anyway. Oh yeah you are also right that they (MSEA and WCEA) endorsed Hillary Clinton but they have not officially announced this. Maybe they are afraid they will lose the rest of their members.

Should be that way in the entire state! When I was in school Maryland started school after Labor Day. Who are the morans who changed this? Let kids be kids and enjoy their summer along with the families.

What is Wicomico County doing? Nothing. John Fredericksen is against this and it could easily work out. As a matter of fact they should get out on June 9th. Cut out those damn Professional Days.

Wicomico usually puts out a calendar for public input by now. So far this year there hasn't been one. Wonder why?
