Number of Federal workers making at least $100,000 tops half-million

WASHINGTON (ABC7) — With more than two million employees, the federal government is the nation's largest employer. And the number of those workers making more than $100,000 has topped half-a-million for the first time.

"IT analyst. Specialist. Let's see here," said Felipe Gonzalez, as he scrolled through an online list of federal job postings. Gonzalez moved to the D.C. area eight years ago. In that time, he's had the same private sector job, which he likes. But he's always been enticed to work for the federal government.

"The scheduling. The money. The benefits," stated Gonzalez. "Holidays off. Who wouldn't want that job?"

And many do. The average job posting on USAjobs.gov gets 75 applicants. The jobs are so popular, websites like Indeed, AARP, and Monster provide tips to get hired.

I hope trump wins and 25% of them quit.

For too many of these government employees, you could take away everything the first $100,000 - and they would still be overpaid!

In reality $100K is not as outrageous as the title of this posts suggests. Who would not actually want the folks that work for the government and direct the various factions to be the most or best qualified? To do that you certainly need to pay a competitive wage. Truth is you get what you pay for.

Yet we don't have any problem with sports teams paying players 20 to 30 million per year. Or paying movie stars 20 million dollars a movie, or TV stars making 100,000 dollars an episode. Or college presidents making 5 million a year. I could go on and on. In the U.S. you get what someone is willing to pay you.

10:46 - the reality is that most of them are affirmative action hires of one sort or another...and mostly unqualified to do the jobs they are hired for - which is why we have such a large contractor workforce. The contractors can't get the government jobs because they don't know the right people - and the right people can't do the work! We want them to be qualified - their only qualification is knowing the right person to get their foot in the door!

Truth is - it is a big welfare game! The taxpayers are paying double....

11:27 - In private business I am all for getting paid for what someone is willing to pay as long it is a willing customer base. Stealing the money through taxation is another matter. I do not disagree with paying someone a decent wage. But I have worked for government and with government employees for 28 years. Excluding teachers I have not met many government employees who earn their keep. I do not blame the employees.

The president of the United States only makes $400,000 per year. In comparison to CEO's, University presidents, etc he is not making a comparable wage.

10:46 Please... we don't even get 20% of what we pay for ANY public sector hire, including elected officials.

11:27 Comparing private sector, for profit business to the tax payer funded government public sector? Genius! /sarcasm

Make the government SHOW a "profit" (That would be a reduction in spending, and proper spending, in their terms) and maybe we can talk.

Nice retirement benefits, too!

Sorry that is not how it always works. I know a few people that went to work for the federal government right after they left high school. No college at all. When they retired they were making well over 100k.

Everyone would be shocked as to how many people work for the federal government that don't speak English very well. It truly is shocking.
