Virginia to stop recognizing concealed carry gun permits from 25 states

RICHMOND — Attorney General Mark R. Herring (D) announced Tuesday that Virginia will no longer recognize concealed carry handgun permits from 25 states that have reciprocity agreements with the commonwealth.

Under the policy, Virginians with a history of stalking, drug dealing or inpatient mental-health treatment cannot obtain a permit in a state with comparatively lax laws and carry a handgun legally at home.

Herring said severing the out-of-state agreements can prevent people who may be dangerous or irresponsible from carrying a concealed handgun.

Think the San Bernardino killers had a concealed carry permit? Oh that's right their weapons weren't concealed. These politicians are acting more stupid every day.

This doesn't stop carrying by otherwise qualified people from other states, it only penalizes it.

Get a Utah, its easy, and your covered for Virginia as well. Just did it myself recently. As a Maryland resident you can get one because Maryland itself does not issue them.

That's what you get when you go to a democratic governor who believes all the hype that the left kicks up. Now I have to admit, part of the reasoning is valid - why reciprocate to States who do not acknowledge the same process as you, particularly when it comes to violent felonies and other crimes; HOWEVER, the way they went about evaluating criteria of other States compared to the State of Virginia is not comparing apples to apples. For instance, in some states you CAN be a felon and possess a handgun, but be ineligible to obtain a concealed carry permit. And in some states the type of felony is considered. IE: an embezzlement felon may be able to possess a handgun/permit but a murder felon cannot - that seems reasonable to me. Now Virginia was looking at possession regulations of other States, not just concealed permit regulations as means of disqualifying reciprocity. That doesn't make sense since they were comparing possession restrictions to their (VA) concealed carry restrictions. Pickin' up what I'm putting down?

But there is a big kicker - Virginia is an OPEN CARRY state. ANYBODY from ANY STATE that can legally own a handgun in THEIR state of residency can open carry within the State of Virginia. That means wearing firearm in plain view. A few restrictions apply - you can basically open carry any handgun containing less than 20 round magazines. So what do I do if I have a DE concealed carry permit that was recently revoked by VA? I simply grab my Fobus outside the pants holster, clip it on my belt, stuff it with my Para Commander 1911 and tuck in my shirt so that my firearm is fully visible. BOOM, I'm within the law. This new reciprocation law doesn't stop people from carrying; it just changes the manner in which they carry. Personally, I am a BIG supporter of open carry over concealed carry. I think that concealed carry should be limited to law enforcement and select individuals and open carry should be utilized by the general public. Open carry helps law enforcement know who has a gun and who doesn't thus making their job safer and the simple visual presence of guns greatly reduces the potential for violent crime around the person carrying openly. Think about it, if you are a criminal, you can have 3 scenarios to judge the potential success/outcome of the crime you are going to commit:
1) Locations with no carry rights - You have ZERO potential threat of somebody fending you off with a gun
2) Locations with concealed carry rights by permit - You MAY HAVE a potential threat of somebody fending you off with a gun but you don't know who
3) Locations with open carry rights - You KNOW there is a potential threat of somebody fending you off with a gun

Why do you think criminals overwhelmingly target gun-free zones? Because they are vulnerable locations with ZERO substantial resistance - Easy targets! Criminals aren't dumb and when legislators finally figure that out then we'll be much better off. Now that is "Commonsense"

felons-schmelons. it's all a back-door conspiracy to disarm all of us. does it really matter is someone is a felon, 'law-abiding citizen' or a cop if they are pointing a firearm at you? felons were once 'law-abiding citizens' once too. and law-abiding citizens' are only one step away from being a felon. labels mean squat. and not all felonies are violent but yet all carry the same life long punishment. banning so-called felons has not worked anyway. it's just an inconvenience to so called law abiding sheep to get them identified so they know where some of the 300 million plus firearms are located.

and then there is the ego factor, law abiding sheep feel superior when they are 'allowed' to have something while others are 'denied'. and remember all this crap is relatively recent. gradual steps to keep you frogs in the pot of water until it reaches a boil.

none of it matters.
