Ethanol Study Concludes the EPA’s Biofuel Standard Created ‘More Problems Than Solutions’

On the 10-year anniversary of the federal Renewable Fuel Standard, a team of researchers released a study that concludes the policy created “more problems than solutions.”

The report issued last week — “10-Year Review of the Renewable Fuels Standard” — by Drs. Daniel De La Torre Ugarte and Burton English at the University of Tennessee’s Institute of Agriculture takes a look at the environmental, economic and industry effects of the RFS.

“Our analysis shows that the RFS has created more problems than solutions, particularly with regard to hampering advancements in biofuels. Corn ethanol was presented as a ‘bridge’ to advanced biofuels and a means of reducing GHG emissions,” De La Torre Ugarte said in a statement, referencing a comment made by former EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson. “However, the reality is clear that this policy has been a bridge to nowhere.”

I would love to see it go away. I have had the carburetor of all my lawn mowers, and tiller replaced because of the alcohol in the gas. Even with additives, it still causes problems. I have to travel across town to try and find some place that has ethanol free gasoline. Very difficult to do! Government should be sued for the expense of all damage that has been done to small engines due to ethanol gas!

I don't have a problem with ethanol in principle, but I do have a problem with the mandate that says 40% of the crop goes to ethanol production, which puts it in direct competition with food production. If the crop fails, too bad. Enjoy the rising fuel costs and even faster rising food costs.

@ 2:45pm Here is the list of eastern shore ethanol free gas stations. Price varies widely. I solved my riding mower, weed whacher, chain saw problems by "only" using ethanol free gas. Add to that for either type of gas allow the engine to run until it's empty and shuts off on it's own. For riding mower, install a fuel shut off. Close it off when done cutting grass, let motor run until carb is dry, then shut off key. Carb is empty. Same with weed whacker or chain saw if using crummy ethanol gas, open gas cap, turn over to drain all left over gas and run carb dry. Empty carb = no shellac build up in carb. After only using ethanol free fuel and in line fuel shut off valve, no more build up of shellac in carb. = no more $100 carb rebuild expense to mechanic every spring. I buy my gas at Croppers in Berlin.
